I have a 2008, Mainship Pilot, with a single diesel. I need to have the cutlass bearing replaced and it is going to cost me about $4,000. My mechanic wants me to use a bearing from GLIDE Bearings and Seal Systems (see pics). Has anyone used one of these bearings? If so, would you please give me some feedback. Thank you.

I see why. Their cutlass bearing is a two part bearing. You should be able to replace the bearing with out pulling the prop or shaft. This should save you a lot of money on installation. However, $4000 sounds a bit steep for one cutlass bearing installed. Is there more work as part of this $4,000 bid?

We replaced the cutlass bearings on both shafts this winter. I had the props off and the mechanic brought his tool and had both of them done in under 3 hours at about $100 per hour. $4K seems way out of line to me. I supplied the bearings and they cost me $250 for both 2” shafts.

Agree. 4K seems high.
We had one done in Maine with 1.5" shaft in place (but did have to remove prop and line cutter) for about $700 all-in.
Sounds like you are paying CT shoreline prices!

Get another quote for sure. Sounds 2X what it should be.

I was quoted $3000.00 to do all 4 on our boat. I bought a Strut Pro tool and 4 new bearings for about $900.00 and did them myself.

are you still in Nashville? Where did you have your work done?

We have never been in Nashville, we live in Michigan.

The yard probably has extensive security cameras, they obviously saw you coming.

something's amiss here. Ran boatyards most of my life. We always used Durant machine company puller etc. We pop the prop off and press the old cutlass out. Pop the new cutlass in the freezer for a few hours dip it in dish washing liquid and tap it in using the old cutlass as a drift. A couple of hours all done. Noermally takes one and a apprentice to hold and assist. 4K must include haulage and all other annual costs?
