    Buying boat with Volvo TMD40A's

Had a boat with this engine with no problems with the engine. Unfortunately that was not the story with the transmissions. Find the serial number on the transmission(s) and check for parts availability. If parts are not available, my advice is to walk away.

PC Navigation -what can go wrong :)

Questions on this: What NUC are you using? What OS on the NUC? Are you able to see NEMA 2000 engine data, battery data and tank data via the NUC?

PC Navigation -what can go wrong :)

"Digital Yachts has their aquapc which draws 20 watts." The AquaPC OS is Windows 10. Microsoft drops support for this OS in October, 2025.

    Canadian Digital Charts

It's useful when reading the referenced Canadian law to search for the word "printed". CNTRL+F will do the trick, if you are using Windows. Printed documents are sometimes required, but mostly not for the type of craft I'd be using, particularly since I'd have ENC data and the means to render...

    Canadian Digital Charts

There is another issue with using OpenCPN on a computer, nits,a unit of measurement used to quantify the brightness of electronic displays. The nit measurement on most PC displays isn't high enough to produce good visibility in sunlight. I really like OpenCPN, but as noted in my first post...

    Canadian Digital Charts

I've used NOAA charts and OpenCPN on a Windows PC, but not without some issues. The first issue is the GPS link, which can be accomplished via a USB attached smartphone and with other devices. Both devices have to be operational while underway. The second issue is OpenCPN on PC reliability...

You (Us) old guys have lots of options

I'm with you 100%, Darren.. We sold the 37' twin diesel "trawler" and bought a boat on a trailer. One of the big lessons we learned on the 37' was that we didn't need or use most of the space, even on long cruises, month's long cruises. We just bought a project boat and trailer, a 50 year old...

Why you don't want to sell on your own

I've bought and sold many items privately over the years: cars, boats, trucks, trailers, tools, powered lawn equipment and much more. Never have I encountered anything close to what's in these BuzzFeed examples. I've also tried using third parties to buy or sell, example, boat brokers. Few of...

    second anchor deployment

My most effective anchor configuration, that I've used on both small and large boats, is two in-line anchors. The heavier anchor is attached to the rode. The lighter, usually Dansforth style, is attached to the heavier anchor with its own at least 6' rode. A line and buoy are attached to the...

    Sonar Interference

I've been focused on EMI, ElectroMagnetic Interference. Maybe the interference source is RFI, Radio Frequency Interference, maybe my cell phone. My cell phone is always with me on the boat, always powered on and could conceivably be the source of the always present sonar striping on the MFD.

    Sonar Interference

A faulty transducer or MFD was my thought and the thought of Lowrance technical support; they replaced both the transducer and MFD, but that didn't fix the problem. BTW, with the exception of the striping, this MFD works as advertised. It's a Lowrance Elite FS. With the exception of bringing...

    Sonar Interference

I've a sonar stiping problem on a new Lowrance FS MFD that I've been trying to fix for several months. I've tried moving the transducer and cable, moving the MFD off the helm a few feet, and through warranty replacing the MFD and transducer. No luck so far. In my case the stripping is...

    At the confessional

A bit off topic, but lately I've been using a Lowrance MFD with an overlay feature called Genesis. The Genesis depth data can come from other Lowrance MFDs, that have uploaded the data to a server. The accuracy of these overlays is way beyond anything you'd see on C-Map or Navionics charts. The...

    Electric Powered Boats

Looked at the Northman. Nice boat. The cabin headroom is over 6.4 ft., a big plus for me. The downside is the beam, 9.5 ft: it's not trailerable without permits, one for every state I'd want to tow through.
