    Aging

For me, working on the boat is, at times, solving a problem rarely encountered or you somewhat forgot how to do it. I like that part (excluding the skint knuckles), it makes you think. Your brain is in gear, a good thing. Your wallet is also in gear. Well worth the price.

    Aging

All of the above. I'll be 74 on May 17, right knee hurts a bit but the knee brace helps. I am happiest when on the boat. I've added handholds all over the boat and they really help. Still do the basic maintenance; oil, hoses, whatever comes up. Haven't needed any big stuff yet but if/when it...

Long time sailor getting long in the tooth, so. . .

Mine's all aluminum, pretty bulletproof as I've proven more than once. Also doesn't rust.

    hot alternator

I had the same thing on a new alternator. Mine would be very hot days after I ran the boat. I disconnected the red wire and all is well, runs fine, charges batts, etc.

Owning a 40 foot trawler with no generator?

I sailed Old School from New Orleans to Corpus Christie on the ICW last June. I ran fans off the inverter while underway then ran the Honda 2200 for AC, fans, TV, and lights. Worked just fine and was comfortable at night. Only thing I didn't like was having jugs of gasoline on board out in the sun.

    Helder Nav Lights

    Thanks for the ifo.

Slow Hand – End of the line

I'm in the same boat as you, forgetting things, mild confusion at times, etc. Went to the neurologist, did an MRI, blood test, and a 4 hour quiz at the neuro's office. Bottom line at the last meeting, no dementia, just getting old, 74 in May. It's pretty weird but he said the best medicine for...

    Helder Nav Lights

I'm looking for Helder nav lights, port and starboard. The lenses need replacing and I can't find Helder lights online. Does anyone know where to locate them? Maybe the company was sold and now under a new name.

    Lofrans Windlasses: Opinions?

The Lofrans on Old School is 33 years old and works just fine.

    Collision and demasting

Thanks for putting this on here, I appreciate it. I've learned a few things regarding "right of way" and how boats are measured for ability to stay upright. Mike

    Coronial Inquiry-Sinking of Eliza 1

This past May I did a roll test by accident and it scared the hell out of me. I was in the Gulf ICW sailing from New Orleans to Corpus Christi Texas. I ran up on a submerged piling on the port side, the boat rolled to what seemed like a 45 degree angle and I was looking at the water through the...

    Hey y'all!

Tow Boat US or Sea Tow, greats insurance as I have learned. Twice in the past month in the new cruising grounds, Western Gulf Coast ICW. Seems like the ICW gets narrower the further south you go, or maybe less maintenance.

    Impeller replacement

I have the Speedseal with not enough room for a puller. The right angle needle nose pliers work well, just keep jiggling the old impeller till it comes out. Then smear Vaseline in the in the impeller pump body and work it in with the palm of your hand. Run the engine, check for leaks, good to go.

    New guy

Fine looking ride, congratulations. You'll have plenty of questions going forward, this is a great place to start.

    Where is south enough

Anywhere on the Gulf Coast. I'm in Aransas Pass, Texas now. 16 years in Louisiana on the Tickfaw River, fresh water, no barnacles, about a 3hour sail to New Orleans across Lake Pontchartrain. The gulf ICW goes thru there.
