Currently finalizing a deal on a 1973 Willard 30 . Being held up because we can’t find an insurance company in Florida to write a policy on a boat of this vintage. Can anyone provide the names of any insurance companies that may insure vintage trawlers or ones they have recently had success with. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully someone will provide suggestions but as an owner of a 1976 Hatteras it is really challenging. Hopefully you have significant boating experience? Even if you can get insurance they often severely cap the policy amount and probably will have no coverage or a very high deductible for named storms. There are some insurance experts here that likely can help you IF there is anyone who will underwrite it. Good luck!

I used David Vargas of State Farm here in Florida. My Seaweed is 40-plus years old and did require a fresh survey. 727-564-9599

Welcome aboard. Try Peter Ricks at Novamar. He is Pau Hana here on TF.

Is he still around? I haven't seen Pau Hana post in a long time. I left several phone and email messages for a new insurance question several times including his assistant who was on his voicemail. Crickets.

Any other recommendations besides Peter Ricks?

I talked to Peter Yesterday. I know he is busy but I am surprised he hasn’t gotten back to you. I would recommend you try to communicate with Cortney again. When she is on vacation Peter becomes very disorganized.

Down sized from a 40' Willard to a 2018 31' Helmsman. Called and emailed
Peter several times about insuring the new boat but never received a response.
Called my local house/car insurance agent and had an agreed value yacht policy
with Progressive without the need of a survey the next day. The coverage matched that which I've had with Markel and Chubb.

Peter, I saw Peter's assistant today and asked her why she hadn't gotten back to you. She said they are having trouble with their phone AI system, especially if you called in through the 1-800 number. She says she is unaware of your needs and to call on her direct line. If you don't have her direct number PM me and I will get it for you.

American Modern insures our 35 yr old trawler. Coverage up to 150 miles from US port, so most of the Bahamas is included.
Call Vallery Gonzalez at Overseas Yacht Insurance Ft Lauderdale 941-671-0687.
I'm not affiliated - just a happy customer.

Wife and I just viewed a Willard Vega 30 yesterday. Very cute boat. Seemed like an economical weekender. Wish it had been a 40 footer.

Same age as yours and I’m thinking what about just going liability/enviro only. Satisfy the marina and save good change annually.

Btw it would look so much cuter with that awkward flybridge removed.

We had our Willard Vega with Progressive. No survey needed for the smaller boats. Have them now with our MS350.

I’ve flat given up on full coverage for my 2003 MS 430. The ONLY option is Geico and they come with a stupid price and some difficult requirements.
Was with Chubb when I did my Canada trip last year (they have a no FL restriction during hurricane season that’s VERY strict.

Also, in shopping this past month or so, I found more incompetent agents than ever before. One was really jerking me off so I called him and AH and gave up.

Got liability only for $750 thru progressive.

70s fales progressive no problem, was quick and easy but I’m a liability guy. Told me I need Alaska policy north of pelican but it was not much more money and they covered Mexico supposedly lol. Oh it was coastal only had restrictions on off shore work.

Not quite muerto yet, y'all!

As Dave mentioned, I've been extremely over the last 2 years, and I want to apologize for not being of better service to the forum. The madness of COVID and the resultant fluctutions in my area of the marine industry have largely subsided, and life is (somewhat) returned to normal- fixing broken boat stuff, keeping the wife happy, and enjoying an occasional minute of quiet...

Fire away with your questions!

Peter

Another State Farm guy, my policy covers all coastal waters up to 50 miles offshore and from Alaska to the Mexican border including through Canada. It's bundled with home and cars, runs about $70 a month and no survey was required

Thanks everyone for the replies and info. We were able to secure insurance through State Farm. We are the proud owners of "Jump Up" and can't wait to cruise on her.

Greetings,
Mr. P. Re: your post #17. "...an occasional minute of quiet...". Hey man with all the positive input you've provided over the years, take TWO minutes. You most definitely deserve it!
