LibertyBay, Poulsbo to Port Townsend, our first real cruise

I usually anchor south of the ferry dock good bottom there. North gets sketchy. And you have to factor the wind direction/strength as klee mentions above.

    Steadying sail design/rigging?

I'll throw this in as food for thought.. https://www.bannerbaymarine.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=25 It's an anchor riding sail. I have not used one, have seen one in the San Juans. If I get industrious I will prototype one from tarp material this season as my boat can tramp bad on anchor.

What does it mean to be a boater?

This is a great excuse to go to Baja by land or sea, buy a nice Mexican blanket, throw it over the sofa. Every time you sit on it will remind you of a great trip to Baja, which could cost less than a new sofa.

    DIY Hull roll and tipping

I have had good results with the Rust Oleum marine paint on vertical sections of cabin topsides. Easy to use/reduce/repair. The lower price point is just a nice benefit. I agree with Sean9, msg 9. Have used Pettit EZ Poxy on the more exposed sections of the topsides subject to more extreme...

Seattle, new to trawling, excited to learn all the diesel things

Is there a recent survey, anything on it to discuss there? As Portage B suggests, start using a weather app to compare predictions to actual local conditions, like "Windy" or "Predict Wind." Most sailors coming over to the motor side have some weather experience. Learn how to...

Mayday & rescue in Rosario Straights

My read on this is it happened on a Saturday weekend, priority was given to "the schedule" vs the weather. Had to get back for some reason. A schedule can be the most dangerous thing on a boat.

Mayday & rescue in Rosario Straights

Me too. Hope I never have to make a VHF call like that. Makes me think this boat didn't have a backup handheld radio, something I keep close out there.

Mayday & rescue in Rosario Straights

No knowledge of boat type. I've been out there in 3 to 4 footers, that was no fun. Sounds like they took 6 footer green water over the bow to smash in the windows.

Best cellular carrier in the PNW

Starlink has been the game changer for my comm and internet last couple of years, especially up north in BC. I'm still a Verizon guy.

    Fly bridge windscreen material

Aqua Contact a couple of the plastic shops in your area. My vote is for polycarbonate with UV coating. I've done that and laminated glass cut with water jet, polycarbonate way less hassle, weight and cost.

    Dinghy on swim platform

Darren, I painted boat name & hailing port on the bottom of my 10' rib. Used an alphabet template set. Survey a couple years ago noted that as sufficient.

    Bolting solar panels through bimini

Take a peek at the pix in my album folder... https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/members/12066-albums628.html I put stringers between the frame tubes, grommets in the bimini, then 1/4-20 fasteners through the stack. Load goes into the frame, not the fabric. I get big winds here in the northwest...

    Lofrans Windlasses: Opinions?

Another happy Lofrans Tigres user, no problem windlass for many seasons. Got a nice cover for it from these folks https://standoutyachtfittings.com/product/lofrans-horizontal-windlasses/ Keeps it clean longer, keeps water from going into the chain locker too.

    Refrigerator power consumption question

9 x 24 = 216 amp hours. Assume 50% duty cycle (swag) 108 a-h over 24 hours. Likely running current is less. Usually want to discharge no more than half rating, that says a battery bank about 220 a-h. Feel free to correct me on this. 9 amps seems like a lot, my never-cool pulls under 5 amps...

    Storm anchoring

Storms at night are the worst. Consider an anchor alarm that shows a histogram of boat motion on anchor. Can help at night when shore references deteriorate. Maybe you're already doing this.

Winter cold snap -14C this morning

I'm with the Kevin plan...cold adult beverages here in the warm sun in Mulege. Upper 70's. Just back from a dirt bike recon ride for best way into a remote site to view pintas, ancient rock art. These areas are managed by local Ranchero, we had a nice chat with Poncho. Will be guiding in...

Hal, Search "Boat survey checklist", stuff like that will get you some clues. Also, if you work away from Seattle a lot you may not need a liveaboard. My marina allows up to 2 weeks a month overnight on the boat, so ask about that when talking to harbormasters.
