    Autonomous marine travel

Nothing prevent this technology wise, what delays it is wide adoption like anything else. Like for cars, theoretically we could bring accident to 0 technology wise, but this is assuming all car would be equipped with compatible technologies what will take time. Look at how much time it took for...

    Aging

I guess there is no general way of aging. I will take the example of my grand mother and her familly. MOst of them were over 100 when they passed out and in pretty good shape. Her father went through 2 world wars and was battling in the trecnh during WWI and never got an health issue in his life...

    water dispensor

Why not to use a 5gal jug like for home water fountain and connect a small pump to it. You can toss it under a galley counter top or on the side, slip a hose in and connect a small faucet like for filtered water to the pump. Easy and cheap. L

    Salon FLoor Refinishing....

+1, find the finest sawdust you can from the wood you want to fill, mix with your glue of choice to make a mastic and you are done. Epoxy is a bit more difficult to sand than other glues as harder so depending of where you use it some alternative like wood glue or even plastic cement will do. L

    Polyethylene tarp glue/cement

Shrink wrap tape would be my first test but depending on tarp type may not withstand for long. If it is the kind of tarp that are weaved they are not perfectly smooth like boat wrap. Duck tape does not resist to winter, I used it to cover cut end of a poly tarp and with out cold the tape glue...

    Salon FLoor Refinishing....

A cotton rag is doing a much much better job. Dilute your finish with your solvent of choice (mine is turpentine, dilution from 2 part finish 1 part solvet to half/half), form a ball with your rag, wipe your finish with it, and make minimum 5 to 8 coats (minimum). Takes some time but if the...

    replace a gfci outlet

Typical gfci outlet are rated for 15 or 20 amps. If you look at the following chart: https://www.ancorproducts.com/en/Resources/Allowable-amperage-of-conductors ...you will see that an awg14, 2 conductor wire is rated for about 30 to 35 amp, so far enough for your outlet. Awg 10 would be a total...

    Congratulating Paulga

This forum is not different in any way from anything from the net, meaning that any question will receive 100 different answers, being right or wrong and even when wrong it may seems right from the view of the one answering. Any reader should keep a critic mindset and ask himself do I think it...

    replace a gfci outlet

To my knowledge, and bare with me if I am wrong as I am not a surveyor, ABYC recommend usage of captive spade terminal. These are also called locking spade, captive fork and so on. Some have kind of upward bend at the end to retain the screw, some have a kind of hole in the middle (not an eye)...

    replace a gfci outlet

This refer to the way you wire the outlet. You can either use push in wire connectors (the holes) or screw connectors (on the side). These are "house" outlet used with solid wires that can be pushed into the holes. On boat solid wires are prohibited based on ABYC standards so side screw...

Bluish smoke- oil or unburnt Fuel?

Was the weather cold? On our boat we can get steam during cold season end in october when temp is cold. Second thing how is your water exhaust, does it throw a good amount of water or just steam? Once we got a torn out impeller that was barely able to pour enough water in the exhaust what...

    International 9L diesel

A bit like my engine. Based on my research I may be the last one to have one but it is rock solid, running like a clock and being based on utility engine (truck, generator, dwell etc) parts are still available more than 50 years later. Only difference on the engine block itself between land and...

Used oil to power our diesel boats

I guess that it depends on the engine. With modern highly electronic controlled engines I would not risk it. With dinosaurs engine like mine maybe. My engine is based on hercules diesel engine made to run on everything military could find to put in the tank so I would not worry much. I found...

    House electrical

I guess that the answer to your question highly depends on what you have aboard and your cruising style. On my boat we have a fridge 12v/110v, a water heater 110v/engine heated, all typical electric stuff like lights, bilge pump, and anything in the kitchen is propane (galley stove, upper deck...

    Automated systems for cruising boats

Nothing different from house automation. Do we really need "smart" light bulbs, connected switches etc. Some may find this useful, some not. L
