    shaft alignment after transmission repair

Normally after any work that moves anything in the propulsion line requires checking the alignment. But it should be close to its' former position. If you didn't have vibration problems before the transmission work, moving the tail 8" up and 2" over is a huge move. I'd have someone responsible...

One more alternator question (F-L 120)...

Most auto parts stores well test your alternator for free. You can rebuild it yourself. It's not hard. Where I get parts: https://www.aspwholesale.com/ There are others, Do a search. There are Youtube videos of alternator rebuilds.

    24mm exhaust through hull fitting

what's the reason people would buy this from Heatso at a premium? Same reason they buy the heaters from the original designer/maker. They think it's better. I have a couple of the cheap thru hull fittings and they seem to last. You can buy them on ebay, too.

Seattle, new to trawling, excited to learn all the diesel things

2 micron filters keep your fuel clean. That saves wear on your injector pump and other fuel parts. I have Detroit Diesels with a more complicated injector with tight fitting parts. I'm going on 12 years without replacing an injector.

    screw mounting in cored deck

A screw holds better in epoxy than in wood. Epoxy holds to wood better than a screw. DavidM is exactly right. I've mounted dozens of screws in cored decks that way. Stanchions, etc. The first time I do any new technique, use a new glue or epoxy, I destructive test. Then I know. Just like I know...

    Why a secondary fuel filter?

Westerbeke doesn't make filters. Some company specializing in filter manufacturing does. There may be a number or name identifying the maker. The reason for a secondary filter is safety. If the primary should fill enough to restrict flow, tearing of the filter element is common. With a tear, you...

    Fuel additives

I use Archoil AR6500. I have Detroit Diesels with injectors with many tight fitting parts, so clean fuel with good lubricity is important. It has increased cetane for hotter, cleaner burning that gives about a 10% increase in mileage. Also dissolves sludge buildup in tanks and disperses water in...

    Engine survey question

Depends on the make and model of engine. Some are more reliable and last longer. I know engines, so in my buys never have an engine survey done. And never been surprised. If it's an engine type I can get my borescope in, that, and oil pressure usually tells the longevity issue. An engine survey...

    Need opinions

While I have generators, since installing an inverter years ago, use my generators only about 10% as much as before. I have dedicated inverter bank alternators on each main engine. So if I anchor for a night and run to the next anchorage, my inverter bank is full when I get there. And I run a...

    Would You?

To make a timely trip you'll have to travel in some marginal weather. The prevailing winds after a storm, are from the NW until north of the Columbia River where they become more westerly. So you'll be heading into swells all the way. It can be uncomfortable in a small boat. But fishermen do it...

muffler in a Chinese diesel heater (HCALORY)

There is a better muffler on ebay. It has cast ends that screw on so you can open it up. It still has holes for a water drain. If it's inside, with some thought you can attach a tube and loop it like a sink drain. Once water fills the loop, no exhaust will come out. Or you could block the holes...

    Bilge water evaporation

Do you live aboard? Do you vent the boat? Cooking, showers, and breathing put a lot of moisture in the cabin air. It's possible to have a higher humidity inside while it's raining outside. In the winter people close up the boat tight and don't change enough air. I vent my bilges, even in the...

Westerbeke Raw Water pump not pumping
