    Benmar Course Setter 21 autopilot

Relay Also notice the 3 prong electric connector on the circuit board - bare. By unplugging that circuit, my AP greatly improved. I found unplugging this type of clip, particularly the 10 pin connector down the side of the circuit board, difficult. Limited work space trying to pry the clip...

    Benmar Course Setter 21 autopilot

The relay is in the power unit. I submit the issue I had was a loose electrical connection from the relay switch at the circuit board. A clip connection that wasn't secure. Contacting Robert Edwards by phone worked best for me. 951 659 8510 What kind of issue are you having?

    GB Chain Locker

Nylon rode bitter end tied off to a frame on the side of the locker. I have length tags attached to the entire rode. Last year, had the`5/16" chain hot dipped galvinized which led me to splicing the 3/4" nylon rode on. Even using a fid found my first experience splicing time consuming yet...

    Benmar Course Setter 21 autopilot

After almost 2 years of flawless performance, this summer the autopilot only wanted to turn to port. Telephone consults with Robert Edwards, owner of Benmar, guided me thru removing the circuit boards in the power unit, sending them in for analysis, reinstalled, no joy. Next sent the pilothouse...

    Jimmy Buffett Dies at 76

We liked the same boat Forty years ago I had been enjoying the dream of sailing the Herreschoff designed Alerion, a 26' sloop. Read JB had acquired one shortly thereafter. He added a sound system and sailed the Keys. Good life Jimmy, farewell

40 something foot yachts - engine variables

tidal running Gain a knot or lose one with the ebb and flood here Mission Bay San Diego approx 1 mile from wide open ocean. Tidal current is not a factor when I go boating. I think the Lehman engines are near perfect for my boat. New or rebuilt would be better of course. New motor mounts...

40 something foot yachts - engine variables

Lehman power Inara is a 1972 GB 42'classic powered by twin 108 hp Lehmans with Simms P-5088 fuel injection pumps. Close to 6000 hrs and including the 900 hrs I have added in almost 6 yrs. Painted green, I am partial to the color . Surveys say the displacement is 34K. I have 7.5 knots running...

    Aft strut realignment

Coupler to shaft alignment was checked, engine adjusted, engine run, and checked again all while in the water before aft strut project was started. I followed up the eyeball assessment by using the center of the transmission coupler and pulling a string line taut thru to a projected inline point...

    Aft strut realignment

I couldn’t turn the port propeller by hand after the aft strut cutlass bearing was replaced a year ago. Beginning this year I wrapped a line and stalled the engine out. While cutting the line away, come to find out I still couldn’t spin the prop by hand. Bearing had over 150 hrs. on. Hauled out...

    Lehman front mount bracket replacement

Earlier this year I was guided by Shellee Fountain to have a look at that bracket after telling her I had wrapped a line around the prop that stalled engine. Impossible to know when it broke tho. I used a bottle jack between engine stringer and the manifold. Local welder saved me shipping costs.

    bow pulpit refurbish

Lately my chain was throwing rust as it went thru the gypsy then rust was on my deck. Had to change. Once I had removed the chain, I washed away the stain and sanded off the Cetol Marine Light and kept going to get bare wood. The chain was acid washed and hot dip galvanized. Coating was 3 ml...

    Grand Banks 42

Gb 42 $30K of maintainence/yr would make a boat shine for sure. 1972 Inara is 42-279. I was lucky to get the word the boat was available listed on craigslist with a dozen photos. I was instantly ready to fly to Vegas, meet and get contract on, subject to sea trail and survey. When I bought the...

    Grand Banks 42

I am happy with the survey of my 1972 GB42 performed by Hans Anderson who is in Lompoc CA. When I was looking at buying Inara in 2017, I was fortunate to have access to 5 previous surveys, including a 2012 survey Anderson performed. Thought Anderson's work was the most thorough so I contacted...

    lehman aft freeze plug temps

New understanding of situation, Brian Smith informed me that I am measuring the exhaust gas heat at the aft cylinder head freeze plug, not the coolant. The coolant freeze plug is below it on the block on the level of the heat exchanger. The measurements made on freeze plugs on port side of block...

    lehman aft freeze plug temps

After removing the heat exchanger I rinsed a fair amount of black sediment off the coolant side of the copper tubes but they were still black, The bath changed them to bare copper. The HE had been tagged with 'serviced 12-2016'. lehman aft freeze plug temps

Although the running operating temperatures are within reason at the thermostats, at the other end of the engines, the freeze plugs on the aft end of the cylinder head are at 225 when running at 1600 rpm. Using an infrared thermometer, below the thermostat, port is 170 and starboard is 152. The...

Dual action, random orbital sander recommendation

I have had the best results from the Rigid 6" orbital disc. When used with the vacuum attachment I found the 2 1/2" hose to 6hp shop vac makes dustless work. Last month, a friend and I had about 60 total hours on a couple of these. Like the variable speed, lock on operation, easy paper change...

    Starscope monocular

Well, well I received a tracking # from Starscope today. Shipping Label created, USPS Awaiting Item. Third experience I've had wanting something that is apparently in the supply side logjam. Costs: 57 for the starscope, 25 for phone attachment, and 10 for lifetime warranty.

Starscope support responded a couple times apologizing for the delay...

    Onan not starting

Have had the battery charger off for 24 hrs. The voltage is 12.68 and the specific gravity in all cells is looking good around 1300. So, likely the problem isn't the battery. The magnetic switch plunger has a flat area that has me thinking that it is where it connects to a yoke inside the...
