    Another Engine Smoke Question

So this is the 3rd year I have had the boat and the aftercooler has not been serviced. Now let me ask a dumb question- is the after cooler and heat exchanger the same thing ? When I trace the raw water circuit on my old 6BT there is a pipe from the impellor pump to the oil cooler and then it...

    Another Engine Smoke Question

Hey I appreciate the responses- I now going to explore my cooling system in more depth- I will see how I can set up to do a flush as well. Is this something that should be taken care of ASAP or can it wait till the end of the season ? Thanks

    Another Engine Smoke Question

I have a Cummins 6BT-5.9 210 hp engine (1999) in my Mainship Pilot 30. When my engine goes over 2000-2100 rpm I get white smoke. throttle back and the smoke goes away. Is it steam or smoke ? I don't know while it seems to dissipate quickly, the smoke does appear to have some "body" to it. This...

    Raymarine Evolution Autopilot Install

So I just finished installing a Raymarine Evolution EV 150 auto pilot into my 1999 Mainship Pilot 30 and I thought I would share some of my highs and lows. I have a seastar steering single station. I located the autopilot pump and ACU unit in a compartment under the helm seat- I had to cut a...

    Pilot 30 -Trim

Thanks for the response- it's not serious more curious especially as I look more closely at other Pilot 30s (which I see more on YouTube) and try to perceive how they are trimmed. I am curious to how other owners are seeing their vessels.

    Pilot 30 -Trim

So I am starting my third year with my 1999 Pilot 30 which I am enjoying, but have questions about its trim. It seems to be sitting lower aft than other Pilot's I have seen. The trim hasn't changed since I have owned her but for to my eye she seems stern heavy. For example the engine exhaust is...

    Seatalkng Questions

So a so run the unshielded wire to negative bus, but by itself. My negative bus is currently full with grounds from other items- would you recommend creating another bus off that so it's not sharing with anything else ?

    Seatalkng Questions

When setting up my raymarine seatalk network to link in my autopilot (Raymarine) with my other raymarine instruments one of the components is a power cable which provides power to the network and some of the other instruments- this power cable comes with three wires positive, negative and an...

    Wiring Run

I think the electrical panel it is- I was hoping there was some magic door that I hadn't found yet. I wanted to go in thought the radio however it appears that the PO not only screwed the wooden surround to the bulkhead he/she also glued it

    Wiring Run

I am adding a new battery charger to my 1999 Mainship Pilot 30 and it comes with a monitor to check status and operate the charger. I would like to put this monitor in the cabin perhaps near the radio (or in that vicinity). I was wondering how to access the area behind the radio or that area...

    Wiring Run

I have a 1999 Mainship Pilot 30 and I am installing a new battery charger which comes with a status monitor that I would like to put in the cabin perhaps under the radio or somewhere in that vicinity. I know how to get the wire from the battery charger into the cabin area but don't know how to...

    Yanmar Oil Change Interval

This was about my self realization- I found the discussion thought provoking as I always just changed the oil on the sailboat as a normal part of fall maintenance. I never even thought about recommended maintenance hours for oil changes and was interested to note that some folks were waiting for...

    Yanmar Oil Change Interval

As a sailboat owner, I faithfully changed my oil every fall. It was a job I could do myself took 2-3 pints of oil and a new oil filter. I have followed that practice with my pilot, but after this discussion am wondering why - with only 50-60 hours engine time per season does oil get old after 60...

Declining Speed throughout the Year : a Turbo Issue?

Thanks everyone for the replies- I think i have to agree that its probably a bottom issue. I did take apart the turbo filter and look at the blades and system and all seems well with spinning blades and a relatively clean filter. I have not added any significant weight to the boat in terms of...

Declining Speed throughout the Year : a Turbo Issue?

Okay I appreciate that thought- I have a fairly robust fuel filtration system and I didn't initially consider that because when my sailboat's filters were clogged the engine would struggle to reach cruising RPMs- I have no trouble reaching cruising rpms however this boat's filters haven't been...

Declining Speed throughout the Year : a Turbo Issue?

I have 210hp Cummins 6BT-5.9M engine driving a 1999 Mainship Pilot 30. At the beginning of the season I was getting an average speed of about 12.7 kts at cruise (2400 rpm) and about 15.6 WOT (just shy of 2600). More recently the average speed has dropped to about 10.2 and 12.5 respectively. I...

    Constant RPM but Speed Varies

So to follow up and close this thread- I appreciate all the responses- I did get a laser tach and checked my tach which was remarkably close. I will be sending out my transmission for analysis this fall when I winterize my boat along with my engine oil. Since this incident, I have taken the boat...

    Constant RPM but Speed Varies

BobMc- I boat in the Chesapeake 6-10 feet of depth is our norm. I do appreciate fluid dynamics, but it has never happened before- I am pretty sure this was something on the wheel, but I will be going out again this week to see what happens !

I did check the transmission oil and it looked very pristine- I am planning on changing it this fall and will send out for analysis- also hopefully tomorrow will be going out for a test run
