WARNING: Safety issues with Mathers controls

I know all catch alot of flack for this but it's just me being me. I love my Morse controls! Nice, cable operated with low maintenance. Pull the controls if you can't access from underneath. Do a quick survey of all connections and replace your cables every 10yrs. Or sooner. I work on cars...

Thoughts on leasing out my trawler for Loopers

I only read a few of the responses and they all seemed fairly negative to the idea. I would agree to them for the most part BUT,,,, Here is how I'm looking at it. You're not renting the boat to a hundred different people. You're looking for 1 maybe 2 leases. The idea here is to find the right...

    79 Albin36 with hynautic steering

Good afternoon all!! Happy New Year and hope all is well with everyone. So, another question as usual. Wondering if anyone has upgraded there steering. Or maybe I shouldn't say "upgraded" but rather just made a change,,, in total turns from lock to lock. My total turns is almost 5 complete...

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Over a week has gone by and I still have mixed feelings. One minute I'm happy I handled the boat as I did. The next I'm mad because I didn't do the right thing. Although I will never knowingly try that again, I admit,,,,, it was fun. I found out my "buoys" app gives me wave height when I...

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Ya know, always diddling around rhode island, narragansett bay and providence river with the rear occasion of heading out block island I've realized my seamanship skills are sorely lacking(I believe). That said, I was happy with my ability to maneuver through the waves for over 2 hrs like a...

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Yup!!! I knew when I was out there when the waves got as high as they did(I know they were around 10fters) I had no chance of returning. Honestly the worst day in my life in a boat. I've seen some big waves but those waves were very different! I never seen waves up close like that and can't...

    Lehman sp120 oil consumption

Good morning. As some of you may know I have purchased a 1979 albin 36 recently. It's got the lehman sp120. I have put 25hrs on the engine and I had to throw 1quart of oil in it so far. From what I've read and have been told these engines normally have a light blueish smoke to them when they...

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Thanks! It was a crazy ride to say the least. Those waves were crazy to say the least. Haven't run this boat much so wasn't too sure how she would handle. Knowing what I know now,, I wouldn't knowingly make that run again but I also feel 100% fine going through it if it happened. If I had...

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Uuuuuuuhhhhhhhh yup! Exactly what you said about not leaving in the afternoon(and I did, 1pm). That was the wildest ride I've been in. Not sure what the waves were, don't know how to give an answer in feet. But if I had to guess I hit a couple of 8-10fters and they looked about 5-7 average. Not...

If it is rough, is that the area where it will be? How far out past the jetty before it starts to calm?

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

What makes me a bit confused is the tide at buzzards bay it's 1-2hrs different. I'm trying to figure out the best time to leave on a following current t which is an EBB tide in my case but I don't want to deal with 2 much current. First time transiting the canal in a boat new ro me. 79 albin...

    Cape Cod Canal transit question

Hello all. Hope all is well with everyone. Quick question to the cape canal experienced captains. I'm leaving Sandwich Marina tomorrow and would like to know best time to leave. From sandwich to buzzards bay. Seems calm enough tomorrow. Is there a certain time to leave? The tides are completely...

    Spare prop?!

The main reason for asking the question was to see if people who had the 3 blade and switches to the 4 blade would say there was a difference in handling characteristics especially when docking. I'm a single with no BT. That said I admit I'm not a boater of 30yrs. Especially single screw. I...

    Shaft seal leak!!!

Also how do you size packing? I understand the installation part of it but there seems to be different sizes of packing. Again thanks to all that have read and chimed in.

    Shaft seal leak!!!

If I can get my hands on the packing is it something that can be done in the water? I've never done this exact thing before but I've been a mechanic for 25yrs. And I do have a real good sump pump. It's a 110v.

    Shaft seal leak!!!

Any idea how much a shaft log would cost?

    Shaft seal leak!!!

Yeah, she's getting it all this winter! Everything under the water line is getting redone. All new thru hulls prop and shaft service, and now we will throw a stuffing box in there for good measure.

    Shaft seal leak!!!

Anyone have or have had this type of seal assembly? Mine is leaking from the forward front collar right where the shaft goes in. I'm in the water and need to make a 75 mile trip to the marina where I'm getting pulled out in the next few days. While running my bilge pump comes on every 20min. I...

    Spare prop?!

Hello all. So this question is about a spare prop! I'm big on have spares and also upgrading where possible. I would like to have a spare prop on hand just in case. So instead of getting the same prop I thought maybe try something with a different pitch if it's been known to be better. I have...

    Gauge question

That's awesome! I'm happy that mine work. The only problem child is the RPM gauges. They are not reading at all. I'm not concerned with it at this point. My main concern is getting her back home to RI and getting her out. I'm gonna spend the winter and completely reorganize the through hulls...

    Gauge question

And this is EXACTLY how mine is wired. I don't know what you were thinking either. If you rewired with existing gauges then I totally see it and I probably would of done the same. But if you went all out and replaced everything,,,, I'd scratch your head too! But either way,,,, I've got good...

    Gauge question

That's actually how it's wired. The upper helm will only come on if the lower helm is on. Leaving the upper key in the on position takes care of it all. I spent over a day trying to figure this out ? but at least I got gauges that work and are accurate.

    Gauge question

This is what it seems to be. I checked powers and grounds ar both stations across both gauges and were fine. And I load tested the the terminals with a 1 amp light and it was bright. The oil gauge at the lower helm had a print on it that said dual gauge. I believe it's wired this way. Not...
