I ask this because I was asked the question for possibly putting my boat to work. Ive looked online along the Gulf Coast and its mostly...

    Speed Seal

The last posts I could find on Speed Seal were 3 years ago. Are they totally gone or did someone buy the business? I called the owner and spoke to him about selling, didnt get anywhere. The old posts had plenty of suggestions on finding O rings so that shouldn’t be a problem in Baton Rouge, lots...

    Injector Service

Another thread had mention of regular schedule for injector service. I have never had mine serviced and the engine runs fine for the past 12 years. Is this something that should be done regularly or is it `don’t fix it if it ain’t broke`?

    Epic Small Boat Voyages

Here’s a good read. German Jew escapes Nazis in the mid ‘30s, goes to Japan for several years, then things get bad there so he runs from there to Philippines and gets caught up in the Japanese invasion. He decides to escape via small sailboat to Australia. Read about it on gCaptain forum...

    Oil Change Frequency

Did a search, no luck. I have about 80 hours/10 months on my last oil change, figured going to 100 hours would be ok. Perkins 4-236 manual says 250 hours or 3 months, appears the manual call is for OTR trucks. Do the change now or run it to 100 hours which Ill probably have pretty soon, 2980...

    Valve Clearance Adjustment

I installed a new valve cover gasket yesterday and considered a valve clearance check or adjustment. I chickened out and went with “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Engine is running fine, a Perkins 4-236. My questions is this: how can you tell if your valves need adjusting?

    Fuel Vacuum Gauge

What would be an ok reading on a fuel vacuum gauge? I did a search here because I know this has been discussed, but no luck. At the end of a 6 hour ride home this weekend my gauge was reading 3.5 to 4 inches vacuum. Filters were changed maybe 20 hours ago, fuel was clean when I changed them...

    Hurricane Barry

Spent the morning at the slip getting Old School ready for whatever is headed her way. This is one weird storm, nobody seems to have a handle on it. But, I expect flood waters so moved her out into the fairway and tied as well as possible. Had to get out from under cover because the paravane...

    Stray Electricity in Marinas

    Line Strength

I just replaced the old lines that control the paravanes. New line is 3/8” double braided polyester, roughly 75’ in length per pole. According to one strength chart I checked, the tensile strength of this line is 5,000 lbs. There are 5 pulleys that control one pole, thus 4 loops from the crane...
