    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

Wifey B: Wow....that shivers me timbers. So lucky to survive. I'm sure survival time in those waters would be very short. I'm just glad they were rescued so promptly. :)

    Thinking of Downsizing, Options?

No, LOD isn't meaningless. It's a valid number, just not the length for documentation or for marinas.

    Thinking of Downsizing, Options?

Actually there is. For USCG documented boats, it's clear. It's LOA including any extensions.

    Thinking of Downsizing, Options?

Also, one can add Yacht Controller or Dockmate or additional controls or docking stations to a boat fairly easily so they can dock from the side deck or stern or bow.

    Thinking of Downsizing, Options?

CG Registration is also LOA. However, model numbers and LOA have no connection. Don't think of model numbers as lengths. Here's a European Example. Sunseeker Manhattan 63 was 69'4" LOA, 63' LOD. Then they had a model with galley up instead of down. It became Manhattan 65, Identical hull...

    Ocean Alexander Quality

Yes. It is one or the other, depending on point of view and which boat and when and where built. In general, the quality of build is good, but it's also a value boat in that may use less expensive materials inside, but that's often due to the original buyer. As with any boat, the survey is...

2022 cruising, So Where are You Going?

I think the Astoria Bar just gets referenced and warned about so frequently because of it's level of use. We found it not significantly different than all the other bars along the coast and less challenging than some of the narrower inlets. Each inlet is just different and each has it's own...

    Furuno plotter

Pick up the phone and give them a call while you're on the boat. I know, as a society, we've steered people away from phone calls, but in so many situations they're the most effective means of communication. Only thing better is pulling up on cam.

    Thinking of Downsizing, Options?

I'd suggest a very careful and detailed reevaluation of what you want. You mention Grady and Whaler and Down East and you're talking much different type boats than you currently have. You mention a desire for speed. It doesn't sound to me like docking is your issue at all or like size is the...

How do you choose which forecast model on Predictwind?

Choose to check them all. That's the benefit of different models. No one knows for sure and you should consider worst case scenarios. Even the historically least accurate may be the most accurate this time. I would never settle for just a single model.

    Furuno plotter

We have no issues with Furuno and GPS speed. I'd definitely call Furuno and get their input, if I was you.

Diver said prop has pink hue

First, I'd go to aluminum and never use zincs again anywhere. As to the marine electrician you need, the only place I would expect to find them in the area of your boat would be Seabrook but I haven't used them for such.

    Starlink

Don't get me wrong. I do not like Musk and do not like Dish. Equal opportunity dislike. However, I also don't know the full legal arguments. Sometimes a "bad guy" jumps in ahead of others and then has a legal standing even when not in the public interest. If that is the case then you have to...

    Starlink

I have to be the one to point out that there is another side to this argument, that of Dish. Elon Musk has used the power of social media to make his case, but that doesn't mean legally he's right or he's wrong. The courts will ultimately decide unless the companies reach some form of agreement...

Boat Prices: Has the world changed????

Trader Interactive already owns Boatline.com so in the boat business. I'm amazed that patent and registration suits aren't tossed back and forth between Trader and Auto Trader and Boat Trader. Could be interesting.

    Snap, Crackle & Pop!

Wifey B: The shrimp are after you, Scott, and once they have you listed as a target on shrimpnet, there is no escaping.

    Starlink

Great to hear how well it is working in areas of coverage such as the West Coast. We have tested it and found it's coverage map to be quite accurate. From Florida to Delaware, coverage about 70% as long as we stayed close to land. Offshore, very little, just like Bahamas with no coverage yet...

    Nordhavn 40: Atlantic Crossing

Guessing I misinterpreted this post from June 8th which read, "Despite tough sea and choppy waves, Ade and Max were able to install the paravanes, which proved to be very efficient! Philippe". I assume instead of installing as a new install, it meant they were able to set them up to use at that...

    Nordhavn 40: Atlantic Crossing

Paravanes were his problem. That's what got entangled in his prop. They were installed at the last minute.

2022 cruising, So Where are You Going?

Looks like you have a beautiful day for that trip south. Moderate wind waves and very small swells to Westport. Chamber of Commerce conditions. Grab some fish from the charters in Westport if you can. Interesting old town vibe combined with large boat builder.

Foul Weather Gear for the Great Loop

Wifey B: Definitely won't do Western Erie due to air draft. Last time we went to Rochester. Don't know if we will next time or not. Boat will likely be a Sunseeker Manhattan. We loved Lake Ontario with the huge variety of places to visit. We hit the islands to the East only briefly with time in...

2022 cruising, So Where are You Going?

Wifey B: Not making the Faroe Islands last summer was a disappointment. We intended to fly out and back in and spend time there but rules tightened and it wasn't practical. Next time. :)

2022 cruising, So Where are You Going?

Wifey B: Yes, a bit extreme. Lake we lived on was seldom so calm. Nice to bring back memories though. It was on such a day when we were in the North Channel that we ran across an older couple and their grandson stranded by a dead battery. They had recently purchased the boat. A couple of...

Foul Weather Gear for the Great Loop

Wifey B: What you can do next spring is a half loop, a Great Lakes summer. Go from home to Chicago but don't leave out any lakes, then return home the way you came if you want. We do our infamous "leapfrogging". You'll be time pressed this year so don't try to see it all. Rather than hours...

Foul Weather Gear for the Great Loop

Wifey B: You're not still planning on looping this year are you? Mainly need rain gear but if looping in March and April or after September, need some cold weather gear. I recommend cross country ski jackets you can find at places like Academy Sports with masks also found there. :)
