Manatee needs a new engine, what to do?

There are two boats here in Sarasota with series 4LH-HTE 140HP Yanmars, Good fit, very similar torque & HP curves and identical red line. Mine still utilizes the original 22 x 13 LH prop that came with the Volvo. The famous Man-a-Tee (on their 34th loop I think) sports a late model 110...

Manatee needs a new engine, what to do?

I have a repowered Manatee. Unless one intends to change prop shaft, prop and a plethora of other things, finding an engine with a similar torque, HP & RPM curve with a deck height that will fit under the hatches can be challenging. Est to check around to see what swaps are working well right now.

    Boat Project "Expert" - YouTube

Thanks for the tip. I can learn a lot (and save even more) by watching folks make the mistakes before I do.

Looking for Ideas - Dashboard Overhaul

Tom: I had the same situation a few years ago and decided to handle it this way. It worked well. https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s16/kk-manatee-helm-project-33921.html

    Manatee cracks in stateroom

Two things. Water & a freeze, or an stress cracks from windlass & a weak pulpit or particularly heavy anchor. The forward hatch border is the first possible flex point behind the pulpit. On a hard pull with a vertical windlass, if the deck core or pulpit base has weakened, the cracks will...

St. Lucie River Railroad Bridge update

Holy crap! That rusty old RR bridge over the St Lucie doesn’t look like something made for such frequent cycles. To think of a train going 110 MPH through Stuart (or anything above 45 MPH for that matter) seems so contrary to the character and pace of the people there. I never knew anything...

    Mobius XPM for sale

For me, learning that boat might be more intimidating than paying for it. It’s a dream boat beyond the boat I dream of, but the Gardner….yeah, that’s in the boat I dream of.

    Kadey-Krogen acquires American Tugs

I should add, some might say that the merger of widely contrasting marks of the past sometimes resulted in the loss of identity for both. I think that KK & AT are well respected brands of their own where neither mark will have to sell its soul to the other. Dan,… I wouldn’t worry about...

    Kadey-Krogen acquires American Tugs

At least as far as build quality and philosophy, I can’t think of a better marriage. KK was obviously in search of something to offer other than their traditional full displacement hulls when the took on Summit. As a long time KK owner/enthusiast, asking myself if I found KK and AT...

TF data loss - all posts from yesterday gone?

Sheesh. I distilled and shared the totality of my boat wisdom here yesterday, and with my short term memory loss, I came back today to remind myself of what it was. Almost a whole paragraph of awesome…up in smoke.

    Krogen Manatee Transom Door cables-PITA!

When I built the swim platform, I couldn’t find another Manatee with a setup I liked, so I bologna cut the door in half and hinged it with auto-lifting commercial refrigerator hinges. Like you, I didn’t want the trip hazards. That project is still on the Krogen section of TF, I don’t know...

    Just cut loose my genset

After 11 years of repairing, rebuilding, relocating, reinstalling and removing my Northern Lights 5KW generator, I had to yank it again 6 months ago after learning that the last bad hurricane must have backed up water through the exhaust and flooded the cylinders. She froze. After busting it...

    Galley Cabinet Doors

Wills: I probably have a half dozen or so teak doors about the same size as the ones above my fridge, 10 x 12.5, a couple of 10.5 X 12.5. These are new doors made from good 1” thick teak, not the plantation stuff, no finish on them. Sold three to a friend re-doing his KK Whaleback. I can ask...

    Paravanes

Elegant for sure. I’ll assume that with so much forethought, the vessel will be equally enforced to spread the considerable loads. Very interesting design.

    Another project on our Manatee

I live in FL year round so A/C units are pretty stressed here. I put new windows in the salon a couple of years ago and since there was a bit of water damage to the wall below each window, I skarfed in some teak board and then covered the entire wall with a tongue & groove honeycombed vinyl...

    Manatee galley project

I have so many other projects that I really haven’t done anything with either space, although there are plenty of kitchen/galley ideas to improve access and usage of the space. Generally, the Manatee has a comparatively high volume of storage space, and even though you can never have enough...

Hurricane Ian was Tropical Storm Ian was Tropical Depression 09

Got kicked off LBK yesterday at 6 PM yesterday as with fellow Manatee owners, the Anderson’s on (Mango Mama). They left LBK yesterday and made a reservation at a hotel in in North Port to escape the storm. Now they’re directly in eye path and could get winds of 150 mph. What a mistake!! I...

Hurricane Ian was Tropical Storm Ian was Tropical Depression 09

Waiting for the 11 PM update. On Longboat Key (Sarasota) we were in the bullseye but easterly wobbles may have helped us get on the west side of the core. This would blow all the water out of the bay and likely leave my boat innthe mud as with Irma a few years ago. Hope my house windows hold...

Hurricane Ian was Tropical Storm Ian was Tropical Depression 09

I just got a message from my neighbor who has a boat sitting right next to mine here in Longboat Key. It looks like we’re both gonna get it bad, but he is 2000 miles away in Nova Scotia where he just got his butt kicked by hurricane Fiona. Poor guy is building a new house there and it knocked...
