Perko Strainers 1 1/8 to 1

Hi folks, I bought a couple of Perko strainers for a song. They were listed as 1" but they're 1-1/8" (#7). On my boat my raw water seacock is all 1". I'm trying to decide if I want to find some way to use a reducer to adapt the strainers, or sell them and buy a couple that are 1".
My current strainers are physically mounted to the seacock, then the hose to the engines are attached. It's really really hard to service them. With the new Perko's I can mount them somewhere easier to get to.

Easy peasy, just screw in a 1-1/8 to 1 inch bushing. Wait a minute. There is no such thing as 1-1/8 pipe. I bet you are trying to measure the opening which would measure about 1-1/8” on a 1” strainer.

My thought also. Pipe thread sizes are nominal, not exact.
For your own checking get ahold of a 1" NPT OD threaded bushing and try it.

I also think that those Perkos don't/never did offer 1 1/8 NPT. THey jump from 1" NPT to 1 1/4NPT which is what I have.

When you get parts they offer a nitrile rubber gasket. If they still offer the cork gaskets avoid them. Get the nitrile.

A last note. Get proper BRONZE fittings from Perko or Groco or Buck Algonquin. Do NOT use brass, it absolutely is not suitable for any seawater application. You will not find bronze fittings at the local hardware or building supply stores.

Thanks for the feedback. I could’ve sworn I saw 1-1/8 somewhere. I’ll go throw the caliper on it again. I know my engine hose is 1” (80hp Lehman’s). I could swear the female side was 1.125.

The boat is 2 hours away so I have to plan every visit. This is a should do project. Even when I install I may wait for a haul out. I have this nightmare of the seacock breaking off at the thru hull. In the winter I can’t jump over and jam a plugin it.

One inch pipe measures 1.315” outside diameter.

You might consider going to any shop and purchasing a close nipple (short piece of pipe) in 1 inch ,1-1/4, and 1 1/2 passing a string thru them and tossing them in your toolbox.

if you're measuring the inside of the female threads on the strainer, 1 inch should read around 1.144 inches. that's the minor thread diameter for 1 inch pipe. as has been stated, the outside diameter of the pipe should be around 1.315 or so.
based on the measurement you already took, i'm betting you have a 1 inch strainer.

Update

Made it down to the boat today. I forgot the new strainers. House is currently 1”, the current strainers are 3/4”. Doh. I’m thinking I’ll do this next haul out since it’s a nice to do.

Looking at the install photos. You may wish to upgrade the install so they are out of the bilge, right way up, and still underwater to make them easier to service if blocked etc.

Your new Perko strainers are excellent but have one weak point. The hinged cover bolts break where they’re drilled for the pin.

Be careful not to over tighten the wing nuts and maybe carry a spare hinged bolt.
