I'd bet that many of you are in the middle to hauling out your boats for the cold winter months ahead. With that thought in mind I thought I'd give you a questto take your mind off your lonely baby sitting in a garage somewhere.

Since I'm the resident TF cheapskate here's a cheapskate question for you. You have two options to pick from and please justify your answer.

When we bought our home one of the things we laughed about were the chandeliers in the garage. Yup, four of them. They each had several of the small base, chandelier type bulbs in them. While those bulbs are festive they don't last long. I've started replacing them (as they burn out) with LED bulbs. The old bulbs are 40W, the new ones are 4W and are much brighter as you can see in the photo below.

So here's the question: Should I replace all the remaining bulbs now, going from the 40W to the 4W bulbs, or should I continue to replace them as they burn out. So pick your answer and justify your answer:

Option A--replace them all now, throw out the old bulbs even though they still work and save on energy consumption, or

Option B--replace them as they burn out and not throw out bulbs that are still working.

Option C : get rid of the chandelier, reason: too much of a PIA to clean :)

Which bulbs to use on your chandeliers in the garage?

I think you have just defined the extreme of Rich Man Problems! :D

Greetings,
Mr. GFC. A ceiling hanger that I like (lotsa glass). MY option C is change out the existing to LED and re-purpose the incandescents (garage/crawl space/dog house etc.).

What bases are on the bulbs? A better picture of old and new "bulbs" would help.

Mr. m. Just saw your post. Indeed! Not one but FOUR chandeliers in the garage, no less....

The cheapskate muscles in my body just recoiled at the thought of tossing out the chandeliers because if I did that I'd have to <GASP> buy new light fixtures! EEK! The chandeliers were in the garage when we bought the house and they became the neighborhood joke.

The bulbs all have the small base that's about 3/16" diameter. As to putting them in the dog house, if I did that I'd have to unplug his electric blanket. JK, Sailor doesn't have a dog house, he sleeps in the house, usually on the bed.

My inclination is to replace all the old bulbs with new LED bulbs and save on the electricity but I want to see what each of you has to say.

Replace all the bulbs with LEDs and purchase a second set as replacements.

Never throw anything out.

Ever.

Definitely keep the chandeliers. Definitely. I think they're wonderfully absurd. I also think you should keep up the tradition of changing bulbs only as they burn out. I think the two tone effect adds to the silliness and absurdity that I find so endearing.

I am frankly a little envious of your garage chandeliers.

Apart from taste, it`s a pennypincher economics question that shouldn`t worry a man with chandeliers in the garage. Do you save $ by replacing asap for 90% less electricity draw rather than as they fail. What do they cost? Did you get a quantity deal on the LEDs? Can you delay cataract surgery with brighter lights? Questions, questions....

I could do the math for you but am in a rush right now. On average, if you replace a 60 watt light bulb with an LED and it's on 2 hours per day, the electricity savings will pay for the light bulb in the first 10 to 12 months. This obviously is based on what you pay for the bulb, cost of electricity, and hours per day of use. Some bulb wattage models (25, 100 watt, etc.) aren't as much of a deal. My rule of thumb is at 30 minutes a day of use, they get changed now. Something like a coat closet will never pay for the savings. The other rule I have is that if it requires a step ladder or you have to remove part of the light, they are all getting upgraded now.

Ted

If kept, replace with LEDs... assume you use the lights in your garage on a regular bases.... unless you have a man cave elsewhere.

Now, for me and I assume others, the chandeliers would be in the way. Hang suff from the ceiling.

But, you qualify for a really unique garage.

Please post pics of the entire garage.

We utilize the 30 minute rule in business and when selling LED's. It's very close to what you'd calculate. Now, on top of that, I can't stand the mixed look so would have to replace now.

4 of them? That's a lot of bulbs.
Replace them now.
If you do it by failure, when the last one is replaced, the first ones will start to fail and you'll never get to put the stepladder away..

With the exception of the occasional infant mortality, the average LED bulb in the average application, has a 20 year life. I doubt many of us will be replacing burned out ones (based on our age).

I think maybe it looks funny, because you replaced the old 'yellow' bulbs with new 'white' bulbs?

I'm actually a fan on the newer whiter leds over the warmer (softer) colors. I picked up a pack of bulbs for our much simpler hallway light two weeks ago, and I was surprised about how affordable the led's have become.

I say put in all new led bulbs and don't look back!

Jim

p.s. I, too, want to see pics of your garage! Never seen one with a chandelier, let alone four!

OK ya buncha whiners. Y'all remind me of a bunch of snowflakes. Here are not 1, but 2 pics of the garage.

That large pile of "stuff" in front of the Terrain is all stuff that belongs to Tina's mother. She's 104 and in a long term care facility. When we moved her out of her last facility we didn't really want to sell her things because the future is an uncertain beatch and can turn on you in an instant. So we piled it all up in our garage. :banghead:

It's a 6-car garage though it would be impossible to get six cars in there now. I built some 16" deep shelves along the far left wall, put a stainless rack down the center where we keep extra food, at the back is a workbench that's about 22' long and a refrig/freezer, and along the right wall sits a gun safe, my rollaround tool box, more storage shelves and I just build some more storage shelves where we put all the stuff that was on Beachcomber. Oh, and I almost forgot, there is a push mower and a riding mower in front of my car.

So, I'm taking it from the comments posted that y'all don't have 6-car garages with chandeliers! JK.:dance::dance:

You guys in Washington must be into your garages like Floridians are into bathrooms!

Chandeliers in the garage. Clearly that says something about you. :ermm: At the very least, too much HGTV.

Greetings,
Mr. GFC. I might be impressed IF there was any semblance of tidiness being displayed but from what I can see, you have an extravagantly illuminated (yes, by the 4 chandeliers) mess. I mean that in the nicest way, of course...

22 posts on this?

You all missed the obvious!!

What does Tina (The queen of the land yacht) want?

At this point it doesn't matter what option or what TFs want. Now honey go change the oil in the land yacht.

Greetings,
Mr. ASD. "You all missed the obvious!!". Not at all. I was simply trying to encourage Mr. GFC's fantasy of actually maybe, buying an LED bulb or being able to make a decision on his own (let the poor guy dream).

Of course, Mr. ASD, we BOTH know, that'll never happen.

Wifey B: They're just all jealous whiners. I think I'll order some chandeliers for our garages. I tried to google garage chandeliers, but that didn't work. I'm wondering if one should select chandeliers based on car, and, if so, what goes best with my Porsche. I thought our garage was very nice but now I feel I need more. :D

I just ordered two of these for my engine room

Sadly, I really could use a 6-car garage.

Our 2 car garage is filled with toys, I have a storage unit to store the trailer for the toys, and our 3 vehicles [my wife's car, my daughter's car and my new Ram Truck (purchased last Friday - man they were almost giving them away!)] are parked outside.

Until now, we thought our friends in the house down the road with a large crystal chandelier in their otherwise tiny and unremarkable guest bathroom was --um-- somewhat unusual. Garage application takes the cake, however!

P.S. Being the OCD (or is that DCO) person that I am, I would have to change all bulbs at the same time...and they would all have to emit a nice, warm, candle-like glow. No bright-white warehouse-style LED's! ...dimmer-controlled.

These chandeliers look nothing like the chandeliers in prior pic. I think we've been had!!!!
