So I recently bought a 1972 Pearson 43' that I thought was a trawler but apparently it's really more like a houseboat AND I NEED TO TALK WITH SOMEONE THAT'S OWNED ONE OF THESE.

EverAfter,

Looks like a Trawler to me (Google search images).

It's a Trawler

You are right it is not a Trawler. But then neither are the other 1000 boats that are listed as “trawlers” . They are just slow boats with justification.

If it makes you feel any better, all the tugs out there are really express cruisers in drag. Since when does a real tug plane?

Does not matter. The question is, does the boat suit you?

Yeah, that's what we call a trawler style coastal cruiser, and a very nice one at that, and definitely not a houseboat. That must just have been someone yanking your chain, as they say... :)

It may not be a trawler in the purist definition of the word. My advice, dont worry about it. You have a nice boat, makes you happy.

Incidentally, we have been discussing the definition of a trawler, for years. If we cant define it, the person who says, "you dont have a trawler" need to write us a definition.

ok here goes:

A Trawler is a fishing boat that is used for trawling.

A recreational trawler is like boats that many members here have.

Honoring the workboat likeness.

That is the "purpose" not a design.

True. But that means that a John boat from Sears, pulling a "trawl" to catch shrimp would be a trawler. And it would. But the purpose of this forum is for people who own what we all accept as "Trawlers" to discuss issues, problems and solutions we all have with our "Trawlers". US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said it best: "I can't define what Pornography is, but I know it when I see it".

Winner! Best quote of the day!

Thank you for the laugh!

Aloha and Mahalo!

I had a trawler. Then I had a houseboat. The difference between a coastal trawler and houseboat is immense maintenance and of course status...neither of which was a priority for us.

Every one here seems to think a Trawler is a hull design. It is not. It is a boat set up to pull trawls and has little to do with the hull and more to do with the rigging.
If your boat is not equipped to fish your so called Trawler is just a slow boat.
If I take my Downeaster and put in a 85 HP engine did I just make it a trawler. I think not. If I mount a drum, outriggers ,doors and winches, yes I am now a Trawler.

Aloha! Where is your boat? Can't wait to be able to visit Hawaii again when all of this foolishness is over.

Beg to differ. My GB 36 is a Trawler, by the accepted definition of non fishing, personal use boats of this type.

It's a boat house.

Defination of a trawler

Whew, I was worried I didn't have a trawler, our Albin 43 seems to fit your definition.

We fish from her and the definition of trawl is, "drag or trail (something) through water or other liquid", which we do when we fish.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Just sayin'. (Yes, I know my boat is not a trawler:))

So I am guessing OP thought he bought a fishing boat? Did he buy it sight unseen?
