    Is Autopilot Necessary In PNW?

I mentioned that in my short post #19. The longer version is that we first left the dock in Hampton, could see a bit until we got into the Elizabeth River, couldn't see squat, no sense of direction, no idea where our steering corrections were going... and we only got control of the boat by...

    Standard Horizon or Icom?

I mostly haven't shopped these two in the same sentence... but we have two installed Icoms, and two hand held Standard Horizons. Of the two Icoms, one is a model that supports automatic foghorn and hailer listen-back. The foghorn thing is a big deal. Of the two SH's, one is a gazillion years...

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

Yep. our previous boat would "sleep 6" -- counting the pull-out bed in the saloon. Never mind that it blocked access to everywhere when it was deployed. Current boat? Ditto, "sleeps 8," and ditto all the blockage. I don't even know 8 people. Also, bed ingress/egress in our bow stateroom...

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

Yep. Above size X, builder feels they need to add another stateroom, and another head/shower. Whether there's space or not. I get why: market forces are probably such that buyers with family of size Y wants to keep the boat "small" but wants to cram in all the family members. (Smallest...

    Value of a Captain's Door?

Seems to me the Mainship 350/390 might have all that... although I'm not sure about cruise and planing speeds. ?? -Chris

    MS 390 - Fuel sending unit(s)

There are display/sensor combos meant for single and dual helm installations. I think different resistance curves. In the literature, I've not ever seen a mandatory switch mentioned for the latter. OTOH, if you have the former, maybe a switch would have been used for that. Doesn't sound like...

    Zinc sizes

Cheers. Sometimes "engine" zincs are on the bolt-ons -- heat exchanger, gear oil coolers, etc. -- so maybe that could be a reason anodes aren't mentioned in the base engine manual. Just a guess... but our engine manual is silent on anodes, too... for that reason... -Chris

    Looking at a 1980 34 mainship

Fuel burn is usually not even close to your top-most expenses. Insurance, docking, etc. And if you run it at displacement speeds, the burn rate with the Cummins B is likely not much different than it would have been with the DD 8.2T we had in our '87 Mk III, or the more common Perkins engines...

NMEA0183 Furuno Sounder to Garmin Plotter

Last year sometime, I connected our Furuno MFD to our old SeaTalk/NMEA0183-only Raymarine AP course computer. Turned out to be relatively easy since everything was in close proximity... Anyway, that used a wire pair out from the Furuno into a pair of receive connectors on the Raymarine. Power...

NMEA0183 Furuno Sounder to Garmin Plotter

Seems to me you'd use Furuno white as transmit pos (+) and blue as transmit neg (-)... connected to Garmin brown as receive pos (+) and violet as receive neg (-). Can't remember if each unit gets power and ground from elsewhere, or whether they connect. If the latter, Furuno red and black to...

    Looking for advice please.

I'd start with engines, too. Probably replace all the hoses, service heat exchangers and aftercoolers, replace gear oil coolers, etc... new impellers in the water pumps (or maybe even new water pumps if necessary)... new (zinc) anodes... and then the obvious oil and filter change, coolant...

    Zinc sizes

If you can't see the trim tabs to measure, 3" round would probably work. If you've got a thruster, the thruster manual will probably tell you what anode to use for that. You might have a transom anode, maybe Diver's Dream of likely size. We get ours from boatzincs.com, and use R-3s for tabs...
