Hello,

I am looking for a source to replace the fuel filter housing on my MDL3 Onan generator. The Filter assembly, which includes the filter base, clips, and grommet, is listed as 149-1759 in the parts catalog.

Maybe my "googling" skills are substandard, but I can't find a place to "replace" my housing.

Does anyone have a good resource to purchase this item.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hello Tiltrider1,
I called this afternoon and spoke with a really nice lady who told be the part was no longer supported and my best opportunity would be a reseller on eBay.
Oh well.... i will keep trying.

Captain Tobie,

I went to the website and put a request for the part. It appears the website appears to be based in Australia.

Thank you for the help.

Still looking....

Dear Twistedtree,

Thank you so much for the links to more information.

I have several spare filters for the ONAN 15KW, however the housing that holds the filter has a fatal flaw. The "IN" from the fuel pump connected to the housing has over time become stripped. (see picture) There isn't enough metal to "re-thread" the male connector and I was hoping to find a replacement.

I am thinking I need to "rethink" the type of fuel filter for this unit thus design and manufacture an alternate solution. It's just a filter.... right? Or are there certain flow rates and pressures required?

It's a simple enough job to remove and replace, but finding a part for a 30+ year old Cummings generator has proven to be a challenge.

Thank you everyone who has taken the time to help. I appreciate the brain power to help.

OK, I misunderstood. That part number appears to be a filter part number, yet you need the housing/ filter head. Perhaps using the filter number you can see what other applications it's used in, then see if you can get the housing from those suppliers. I think I've seen a similar filter on old Deere engines, for example, and they might still have the housing available.

This search has become a true challenge. I am thinking about taking the housing to a machine shop and see if they can add some thread material to the housing. Next idea is to make some sort of alternate fuel filter.

Thank you for your ideas.

Sorry for the absence... sometimes life gets in the way.

I agree with Tanglewood and I need to start the process of an aftermarket housing and filter. But I am also going to add an electric fuel pump upstream of the filter.

As I have mentioned earlier, my fuel filter housing on my Onan 15KW has developed a fatal flaw and thus no longer usable. I have been unable to find a replacement for this 38 year old part and it is considered "unobtainable". The engine is a 3 cylinder Cummins (MDL 3) however the fuel filter housing is actually a John Deere part. After checking with my local John Deere parts supplier, I have given up with finding a replacement.

I understand many have replaced their engine driven pump with an electrical pump and they have wired it through the start sequence. I am sure most marine techs can do this job.

Here are my questions.
  • What fuel pump does one recommend?
    • How do they have it wired?
    • Dedicated power ON switch or
    • through the start selector and generator power?
  • Which fuel filter system do you like do you the best?
Keep in my all of this should be contained within the sound shield so it can't be to bulky.

If someone has already done this very thing, can they share pictures?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

I have a Delphi electric fuel pump that we made a transfer pump out of. It’s been used by myself and friends for 30 years. It’s not unusual for it to sit unused for 5 years and the used to transfer 400 gallons.

I had a fleet of Isuzu NQR trucks. We often found the need to replace the mechanical lift pumps with electric ( this was always caused by contaminated fuel on engines with 20,000+ hours, not knocking Isuzu). We just bought 38 gph pumps from Summit racing, cheap and small.

You probably need no more than 5gph of fuel so just about anything will work for you.
