Hi,
For various reasons I am looking at a Vetus 9524D bow thruster (24v) on a 12v Universal 41. I understand that a series parallel relay can combine 2 of the house batteries to provide the 24v to the BT. What I cannot determine is how I ‘trigger’ the relay without adding an extra switch.
Obviously on a truck starter type installation, the starter switch sends a signal to the relay/solenoid to enable it.
Has anyone done this and in particular with a Vetus BT and can provide a wiring solution?
Regards

If you have an inverter that you will use while underway for 120 VAC, it's much simpler to use a 12 VDC 6 amp 2 bank battery charger. The wiring is simpler, less electronic switches to fail, and whenever you're on shore power or the generator, the batteries are maintained. My boat is this way:

You should be able to trigger the relay off activating the thruster controls

You could add a separate switch to activate the solenoid prior to using the thruster —consider it an arming switch. When you turn the switch on it activates the solenoid which then supplies 24v to the thruster contol.

My boat came with a relay on a switch. To use the thruster the switch had to be on.

When I went to a dedicated bank I got rid of that in favor of two batteries wired in series and charged from house with a 24v dc-dc charger

That's a big thruster, 5.7 kw. Usually a dedicated bank is a better solution than powering from the house battery.
