I’m currently looking at a Monk Trawler that is located in Wilmington NC. Talking with the broker and he has a 2022 survey that I looked at. In our discussions he mentioned two others have had current surveys on this boat. I understand that these people paid for the surveys but just wondering if / why there isn’t a way to talk with these others and get a copy of there survey for some compensation to them. If I could get a copy of both the other surveys and compare and contrast between the three it should be a good review of the trawler. But I don’t know how I can get in touch of them?
That way I can help offset there out of pocket cost and possibly get more bang for my bucks.
it’s a shame there isn’t a section of website where people can go to sell / buy recent surveys.

Save your money. Two recent surveys & no sale says a lot. Typically the listing broker, though not in possession of the actual surveys, will have a list or at least knowledge of the deficiencies that came up and (presumably) prevented the sale. Sometimes the problems are severe and the buyer just walks. More often the deficiencies are used to renegotiate the deal. If two people have already walked without sharing details best to move on.

There's a previous thread from June 2024 about a Monk with a wet stern. Maybe the same boat?

Good advice by Flatswing.

I’d be just as curious about the 2022 survey. Did the current owner commission that survey prior to purchase, and if so, why are they selling after two years? If not, did it scare someone off back then? Has the boat been on the market for two years?

The recent surveys have nothing to do with the broker, so I see him as being somewhat up front, in mentioning them. He needs to move this thing, so if he has seen the recent surveys, might be more willing to discuss them in more detail, with a serious buyer. But in the end, you want your own survey anyway.

Do you have a link to the listing?

Ask the broker to ask the previous customers if they will sell their survey. The broker has their contact info, and if they've moved on from the boat they should be happy to get some of their money back.

Sometimes people survey boats and move on without purchasing it for reasons other than the boat being the problem. Sometimes it's personal issues, sometimes they can't come up with the money (financing), sometimes they can't get insurance because they lack experience, sometimes they just decide it's not the right boat for them.

While I agree with this comment I need to add. The broker might not have the ability to put you in touch with those previous surveys. He is the selling broker, if there was a buyer’s broker involved the selling broker would not necessarily have the buyer’s info.

There is also the possibility that the previous buyers didn’t share the reason for refusing to close leaving the selling broker only with the knowledge that the boat failed survey.

Reading between the lines. The broker has an obligation to the seller not to the buyer. He has given you some facts and since surveys are opinions he is staying far away from expressing any opinions. He has given you all the warning he feels obligated to while protecting his obligation to the seller. Proceed only with your eyes wide open.

If the boat went to survey there was a signed purchase & sale agreement, the selling broker absolutely has the contact info for the buyer who had the survey performed. Now, the broker isn't going to share that information, but they can contact the customer themselves and ask if they'd sell the survey, that's done all the time.

He/she may not be a smart broker though, the smart ones prefer to have their customers know all the problems up front because they end up wasting a lot less of their time as deal after deal falls apart for the dumb brokers who try to hide things.

I under that the broker did give me the name of the surveyor so I will try and contact him to see if he can help. We will see
