Mine is leaking (works fine no overheating) it looks like almost $800 for a new one, mechanic says takes 6 hours to replace??? find that hard to believe

It it reasonable to take on the task of rebuilding it, and are kits available?

It's a 6LY2A-STP
 
Only way I can see that being a billable 6 hour project is access. If you have to tear other parts off to get to it,then I can see how that could be the case. I'd post a pic to show the pump access.
 
Access is not hard at all I see the bolts, think he's not the guy I want.

Or I'll do it myself. The hardest thing is to remove the hoses

Anyone know who may rebuild these pumps

You may like to check the service manual, if access is easy.
I did my Westerbeke 30B and access was painful.
Once out there is not much to it and the repair kits have all parts needed, just a thought.
 
Pumps are usually easy to rebuild. A good bearing supply should have seals and bearings. The pump should have a name and number on it. Often on the end plate.

I put in new SMX pumps on my Cummins a couple of years ago. I say I put them in, I paid the mechanic to put them in. The starboard engine took him about 15 minutes to do. 2 hoses and 3 bolts, simple. The port engine had terrible access. Formula put in a small hatch in the aft cabin locker to get to it. Way too small. I cut out the bulkhead in preparation for the exchange. I put in a much larger hatch which the mechanic loved. Then it took about a half hour to replace it. I think your mechanic is way out of line unless the access is extraordinarily bad.

I'll attach an excerpt from the the Johnson Pump catalog that may be useful. I'm guessing your pump is the same as mine. I also started a conversation re the Johnson Pump Service Kit & Part Reference Guide I have... tried to upload to the Resource (Library) section but the file is too large.
I have never removed my pump (only replaced impellers) but I know there are other TFers that have. My understanding is that 3 of the 4 bolts are not too bad to get at - the 4th is another story

I have removed and replaced the water pump on a similar Yanmar 6LY. It is a little difficult particularly removing and replacing one hard to reach bolt. Took about 2 hours. Six is robbery.

Johnson Pumps makes the Yanmar pump, but it is slightly different from the one they sell and they aren’t allowed to sell the Yanmar one.

But the parts should be the same, so buy the bearing and seal kit from them and DIY.
