    Nonnavigable area on chart

I have an idle curiosity: when looking at a chart of Boston Harbor (#13272) there's a violet-shaded section where some piers are located which says to see note B. Note B says that an act of congress, public law 90-312, declares the shaded area nonnavigable. Finding the actual law, passed in...

Identifying your boat on the radio

I don't yet have a boat, but my vote's for pleasure craft, said with emphasis on "pleasure" in a deep, smooth, funky voice.

    Broker malpractice ?

You definitely shouldn't be out the deposit. You can go to your bank and cancel the check, and if they say it's been cashed, then they'll give you a copy of the check image and you can go to him and demand he refund you (or sue, and possibly report the fraud to the police).

Thank you also! I guess it's painfully obvious how much time I've spent operating a boat :)

Ahh, so is there no limit to how far the wheel can turn? It'll just go over and over like a jog dial? Or otherwise is there a way to turn the wheel without changing the position of the sterndrive for re-centering purposes?

    Questions

How does that work, I've actually always been curious about this. What if you leave the wheel at helm 1 all the way to the right and then start steering on helm 2 and turns the wheel all the way left. Does it mean that as soon as you touch the helm 1 wheel, the rudder will go hard over right?

    Engine checks under way

Indeed, there's no need to choose. When I own a boat, I'll aspire to be both!

Help name our new explorer yacht.

Agreed. I'm a nature documentary junkie and the best of the best are the Attenborough-narrated BBC ones.

Language a barrier to foreign cruising?

Common with Gaelic, a few shots of Vodka makes my Russian crisper.

Language a barrier to foreign cruising?

I think I'm going to have to practice that more, when I tried it what came out wasn't even words, more like a confused growl.

Language a barrier to foreign cruising?

I actually did a similar cruise, also on the Danube, but going the other way from Budapest, to Constanta, Romania. I also did a different segment of the Danube at a different time, from Vienna to Nuremberg (I work for one of the major river cruise companies - not Viking) but unfortunately it was...

Language a barrier to foreign cruising?

PIA = Pain in the ass. Thank you everyone for the answers! I guess it's the radio aspect of it that I was most curious about, negotiating passings and such. On land, I've never had problems even in places where no one spoke English and I didn't speak the local language. For basic tourist...

    Ha ha, that's perfect.

Language a barrier to foreign cruising?

Would not speaking a local language be a major impediment to cruising in a (developed) country where English isn't widely spoken? For example the Mediterranean, Netherlands, Nordic countries, Germany (mainly rivers, I suppose), or even Southeast Asia? I've spent enough time abroad to appreciate...

Riddle over 'mummified' body of adventurer found in abandoned yacht

What's the alternative, that he was mummified elsewhere and then placed in the yacht? From the looks of him, he's pretty brittle, I can't imagine someone set him like that after he was mummified. Whatever we can or can't say about the cause of death, the mummification part seems beyond debate.

    The Sheriff Got Me

I (likely mistakenly) thought that the Coast Guard's ability to search without a warrant came from the (implied) customs exception to the 4th amendment, and the the exception only applied on waterways that could potentially be used for international travel. Since Lake Tahoe and its...

    Top trawler/cabin-cruiser brands

Unfortunately USPS courses are harder to find in Boston than one would think (they're usually down on the cape or well outside the city, neither of which are convenient for me). Both them and USCG Aux did have some courses nearby at the beginning of this past summer, but I missed them and right...

    Top trawler/cabin-cruiser brands

Yeah, that one's tough to answer since I'm not in the market yet and even the timing isn't certain; it's why I'm not really trying to figure out what boat would be right for me at the moment. I'm just more curious to see what good boats look like, and it's tough to tell a nice boat from a...
