    Helmsman Hacks

OK, on the Tennessee we deal with river otters! Turns out the tailpipe is perfect position for the little critters to make a nest in there. We had the boat sitting for two weeks. Wind was blowing from the stern to the bow when we started her up. The most gosh awful mess you could think of came...

    Resilient Has Landed

Wow, this set of posts is probably the most well organized, thoughtful posts I have read in regards to the Helmsman products. Thank you FWT! One of the things I found the most important was Scott’s flexibility in making changes on the fly. I would encourage anyone buying to think through the...

That is interesting. I think having the oil tested at the first oil change would be good to establish a base line. I typically change oil annually, but have not gotten to 500 hours in a year, so within tolerances for the guideline.Next year may be different. We plan to head to the Gulf, south...

The boat looks great! Was fun watching her arrive, and getting to meet you. Will be back up that way soon!

    Helmsman Hacks

That separation of areas will work well for the occasional over night guest, and I like the idea of not putting more holes in the wood work. The only shortcoming is not being able to get to coffee. :) That can be managed by moving the coffeemaker to the PH, though. I really like the kayak set...

    Defender Marine / West Marine

I have used them too. They have reasonable prices and have been flawless with service and delivery.

    Defender Marine / West Marine

Thank you. So if you buy $1,000 of merchandise you get your money back. I think the original terms were better than that. Can’t remember though. It has been a few months. They did eliminate shipping charges, but that just means they rolled it into the price.

    Defender Marine / West Marine

I paid the $50 to Defender for the discounts they use to give to “members” about three weeks before they eliminated the program. They were supposed to provide greater discounts on select items for the remainder of the year’s period, per an email they sent out. So far, I haven’t seen any...

    New Peplink gear

I have the same setup. We have the flat panel Starlink, and use the pro 5G instead of the Starlink router. We also use marina WiFi when available, and the home wifi when at home port. I like having everything on board on the Peplink lan, and being able to use alternative sources for the wan...

    Ready for a new refrigerator

Yep. Thanks. That was not worded well in my reply so I deleted this statement. “So, to be safe, connect the AC wires on the fridge to the corresponding wires on the inverter after insuring there is no neutral/ground connection in the fridge wiring.” Should have just stated to plug it in after...

    Ready for a new refrigerator

Is your refrigerator an AC fridge? If yes, the refrigerator has three wires. A positive wire, a negative (neutral) wire, and a ground wire. On some residential appliances, the neutral and the ground are connected in the refrigerator wiring. You will need to check the inverter to see how it...

    Ready for a new refrigerator

One thing to check before installation is the neutral and ground wiring on a non-marine fridge. Sometimes, these two wires are connected at the fridge. On a boat, the neutral and ground should only be combined at the power source. The power sources are a gennie, an inverter, and on the shore...

That is a great question. I have been thinking about that, too. Finding opaque covers like the supplied screens for those port holes will be the ticket, but where to find them?

    Another new start for Helmsman

Lisa found a recliner and also two ottomans which have storage inside. They fit well and we have found them useful. From order to receipt was about 8 weeks. The ottomans are in the post just before this one. They were purchased from Glastop Marine Furniture. The rugs were made from one larger...

    Another new start for Helmsman

One of the decisions we made during the build was to go without blinds, and put curtains in. My wife felt like it would soften the interior. Here are pictures of how they turned out. Pros: They do break the wood interior up. They also were fairly easy to put in, and they do block the sun. They...

    Another new start for Helmsman

I had asked about this a while back and this was a recommended approach https://www.totalboat.com/blogs/totalboat/envy-2-part-clear-varnish-a-durable-coating-for-your-brightwork Apply by brush and sand with 240 grit sandpaper between coats. The boat has 7 to 9 coats, I believe. Final coat...

I added cleats on the cockpit sides, too. Have been happy to have them.
