Wood Freeman 500B Service - San Fran Area

Thanks for the replies guys. I’m diving into it now and will start with cleaning all the contacts. The first few connectors had some minor corrosion and my rudder angle feedback transducer feels loose/damaged. eBay does appear to be a good s source. I couldn’t find Evan’s Radio Dock in Oakland...

Wood Freeman 500B Service - San Fran Area

Do any of you guys know of someone who can service my Wood Freeman 500B autopilot? Looks like great quality and would rather not just replace it with new. I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area. It jus makes a hard port turn when I attempt to use it.

    Interphase Twinscope

Thank you guys. I’ll pull mine off and install the furuno sounder/GPS Plotter I just bought in it’s place rather than fuss with it.

    Interphase Twinscope

Do any of you guys have feedback or experience on an Interphase Twinscope sonar? I’ve got one, but don’t trust it and am struggling for it to give me any useful / reliable info. The boat came with it and I would like to know if it is worth ironing out the bugs and getting it dialed in or just...

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Not necessarily. It is simpler. But if you have a fiberglass or wood boat you just need an external exchanger like the one in the picture attached.

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Keel cooled means that the engine coolant either runs through an externally mounted exchanger or in my case inside the keel itself. My keel is a massive I beam that is boxed in with baffles, the coolant flows through it and exchanges heat directly with the sea water. The advantage is no sea...

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Thanks for the positive comments. I chose 50’ for the reasons you guys mentioned. Much bigger and I’d struggle solo. Curious if any of you guys have had your insurance carrier require training by a USCG licensed captain and endorsement before taking the boat out solo? I guess it makes sense...

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Seemed adequate to me but only ran it for 5 hours or so. Seeing that it's been that way since 2006, I suspect its fine.

I believe the original owner had re-calibrated the fuel injection pump to limit full throttle to 175hp. Normally this engine would be 250+hp.

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Prior owner reported 3gal/hr at 8 knots. Sea trial we were doing 8.5 knots at 1150 rpms. Time will tell. I suspect when I do long runs, I'll run it 1000 rpms and ~7 knots. I'm hopeful and believe it will be very efficient. I was truly blown away by the efficiency of the new 5kw gen from...

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

It's still up on Yachtworld likely for a couple days. https://www.yachtworld.com/boats/2006/custom-metal-craft-marine-long-range-pilothouse-trawler-3567416/ In the end, it's a heavy steel boat built from a tried and true commercial fishing boat design. The original owner was a boat builder...

Max - Yep. That's the one! I'm sure I'll find something to regret. Everything is built to last. I love the traditional keel cooled/dry stack arrangement with the zombie apocalypse 3306 caterpillar - nothing to fail. 4" diameter shaft.

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Hello - I'm new to this site and looking forward to making new friends and seeing what it has to offer. I just bought a new (new to me) tralwer. Boat will be in Northern Cal until we will eventually take it up to PNW and SE Alaska for extensive cruise/liveaboard. First upgrades will likely be...
