Wax before winter layup - cold climate

Hi...Well, my apologies upfront if this has already been discussed anywhere on this forum since the beginning of time, because, if it has, I can't find it. I'm in northern Wisconsin. It gets cold here and boats are taken out of the water, winterized, and shrink-wrapped. We get a few days of...

    Northbound Upper Mississippi August 2019

Well, I was about 9 days without access to the Forum due to login problems, now fixed. I got to GTB Marina, nice place, and my boat had been moved from a longer term storage slip to the transient docks per my request. The 2 55 gallon drums were waiting for me. I took the boat over to the fuel...

    Average daily distance ...

In the past I have been largely interested in getting from point A to point B, and would cruise 24/7 to do so. Did a 63 day voyage one time, cruising from Dana Point, CA to Bayfield, WI. Stopped for 4 days waiting to get through the Panama Canal, then stopped for 6 hours in the Florida Keys...

    First Aid

I have epinephrine in ampoules, but EpiPens are best for most people because they have the correct dose. An ampoule could kill a person, you need to draw up the correct amount. ONE PROBLEM...Unfortunately, many, even most anaphylactic reactions outlast the epi in one or even two EpiPens. I...

    First Aid

You mentioned that "...we will now plan backup refrigeration for insulin." Is one of your crew, or you, diabetic? If so, that is a good idea. But I wouldn't want others thinking it should be part of their medical kit if there were no diabetics aboard, because it should not be.

    First Aid

As an active duty critical care paramedic I put together a pretty comprehensive kit, and have a defibrillator onboard (AED). I teach Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Advanced Pediatric Life Support (PALS) to teachers, RN's, and occasionally an emergency room MD who missed the same class...

    Cell phones on Watch

Oh, and when that "pretty quiet alarm" went off the person at the helm had 15 seconds to get up (it was purposely a few feet away from the helm chair) and shut it off or the world's loudest alarm woke up and scared the feces out of everyone less than about 10 nautical miles away.

    Cell phones on Watch

This is an interesting thread because in about 8-10 days I will be starting a journey north on the Upper Mississippi, Cairo, IL to Minneapolis, MN (actually Stillwater, MN). When aboard my previous boat, and while at sea, the person at the helm very frequently would read a book or whatever...

You are right. I am going to get two 55 gallon containers and a transfer pump. Thank you. I WAS over thinking the situation. If we get halfway and I realize we are going to make it easily I will simply start using the A/C.

Alton Marina is indeed my destination. Unfortunately it is about 275 miles from my departure point. St. Louis is a long haul also, but better than Alton. Again unfortunately, St Louis does not have ANY marinas, which is weird, and no place to dock. I could, if it became absolutely necessary...

Cannot Google Port of Evansville, nor see it on any maps. Nothing else in the area it was apparently in is a marina or fuel dock. Checked from Mississippi/Kaskaskia junction to way up the river.

Thanks people...I'm on my way to Fleet Farm the minute I finish this quick thank you reply. By the way, the Port of Evansville is apparently not a thing anymore. Bummer.

Thank you to those who replied. BandB, thank you very much for the link to the thread regarding times waiting for, and then getting through, the locks. I checked it out and it was very helpful. I will definitely have it on my laptop when I start my journey. I have been keeping track of...

    Northbound Upper Mississippi August 2019

Any first hand (or second hand) info on the Upper Mississippi River situation? Interested in knowing the speed of the current, especially between Cairo, IL and Alton, IL. The run from Green Turtle Bay Marina, where my Meridian 469 (only one ever made) sits to Alton must basically be done on...

    Close Call

The scariest moment I have had in boating came within an hour of departing Dana Point, CA in my new-to-me Nordhavn 55. We were southbound, running along the coastline about 2 miles from shore heading for the Panama Canal. A small commercial fishing boat came inbound to shore off our starboard...

See ya on the two, whose two?

Hi. I'm brand new to this forum, although I have several years of coastal, ocean, and inland cruising. I noticed your picture showing Harbortowne Yacht Basin. Would love to know what you think of it. I'm not really sure how this works, but I assume if I click on the Post Quick Reply button...
