    Lehman 225 moderate black smoke...

Likely an injector issue if the air intakes/filters are relatively clean... Have you ran them at a heavy load for a long enough period of time recently to clear up any carbon deposits that may have an affect on valves?

Island Gypsy 30 - possible purchase

Since this is a complete restore, I would consider removing the teak and examining the decks at this time for compromised core. Quite frankly, if I were doing a full blown resto on a teak deck trawler I would remove the deck teak anyway and not replace it. If you find soggy core, this repair...

There are no restrictions to recording a broadcasted public service announcement, nor are there any legal liabilities in doing so. The laws you are referring to are in cases of private conversations, where an expectation of privacy is present from one or both parties.

Things that make you go hmmm...

I don't fly a political flag. And although I proudly consider myself a redneck, I don't drive a jacked up truck either, not since 1992 anyway. Generally... people that make sweeping accusations and assumptions about a large group of people have issues of their own. Why is it so many just...

    Sooo good to be here!!!

Well then... you're waaaay ahead of 90% of others in your situation that have an Admiral to please... BTW... I wouldn't let +/- 10' of boat (34' vs. 42') be much of an issue as far as single-handing. In my opinion, the more important considerations would be twins vs. single (for docking...

    Towing a 13' whaler or 10 RIB

Thanks! We boat a large inland lake, and go in and out of lots of marinas, and long, narrow coves... some that go back a mile plus. Having the ability to do 360 deg. twists, back up, etc... without worrying about the tow is SO nice! I first came up with this general rigging idea back in the...

Rolling chocks and stabilizer wings, very interesting designs.

With that open design, does it work due to the water below being forced upward as it passes, and the force of the water then hitting the upper surface from underneath "lift" it, thus "lifting" that side of the boat that was rolling, effectively lessening the roll...? Any fluid dynamics experts...

2nd attempt at Trawler purchase, this one 1990 48' Carver Californian

I'm not sure there is an actual definition, but for me, a freshwater boat is one that is normally moored/and or operated in fresh water. The annual trip down the ICW and across to the Bahamas wouldn't negate a "fresh water boat" in my opinion, but spending 4 months in the river, then 8 months...

    Sooo good to be here!!!

Welcome aboard! We moved aboard a similar vessel in March of this year, even though I have another 5 or 6 years at the salt mines myself... :) Finally empty nesters as well, and although I'm landlocked on a large midwestern lake, it is still living on the water! When we hook out for a couple...

2nd attempt at Trawler purchase, this one 1990 48' Carver Californian

On a fresh water only boat, assuming a good survey, I'd be less concerned with the major systems such as main engines, and a bit more with the minor systems like the fresh water pumps and fixtures, and the waste system, A/C units, etc... Our 35 year old Trojan 44 Flybridge is a fresh water...

Oven or bread maker for fresh bread on board?

Bread maker, definitely. We've had several over the years, just about any mid-priced model seems to work well. Just Google reviews, but it is so easy to throw in a few ingredients and hit a start button. I second that the galley oven produces way too much heat for the process... which is why...

    Farrell Trawler Rebuild Project

I believe the black smoke was on the previous Volvo power, not the re-power. OP... I love your build and love the boat, great job!!! With these new pics on the water, was wondering what your thoughts might be on extending the rear overhang further back...? I think it would look good and I've...

    1987 President 37

Your mechanic can't determine the location of the leak? Your mechanic can't determine if there are two tanks or one? Time for a new mechanic. This is a very dangerous situation. I wouldn't go on the boat until that fuel smell is chased down, and I surely wouldn't be turning lights or...

    Towing a 13' whaler or 10 RIB

I made a telescoping aluminum/fiberglass bridle that is 22' long and I tow from the stern cleats. The tow strain is taken up by 5/8 nylon braid that was actually a 4-person tube tow rope. The line passes through the telescoping pieces (one off each stern cleat) with a stainless clasp to the...
