Operating Cost of Single versus Twins

For a very entertaining comparison of boat styles, check out The Grand Tour episode called Seamen (starring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May). They take three very different boats down the Mekong River (a Vietnam war era jet boat, an over the top twin engine cigarette boat, and a...

Operating Cost of Single versus Twins

Interesting that having twins in a grounding situation can be seen as a benefit. As the boat heels, one prop/shaft is damaged, but the other one is saved. Yeah! Same with having the props exposed to logs and submerged pilings. The other prop might not be damaged as bad. That allows the boat...

Operating Cost of Single versus Twins

Here is the official test of whether you should have a single or twin. Have somebody sneak up behind you and light a firecracker. If your pants are wet, you need twins. Sorry, really sorry. Couldn't help myself. But the answer does seem to be based on one's level of anticipatory anxiety...

    Fuel tank rehab

Your boat is even older than mine! I had the same issue on one tank. The PO had moved the tank deck fills because water sat on them. Apparently fresh water sat on them enough so that it got into the tanks. Port tank failed and I had inspection holes installed and the tank was lined with...

    Batteries and plastic boxes

So each battery is in it's own plastic box with no holes? Are you describing maintenance free or AGM batteries?

    New cars; ho hum

I found a picture of my old Jag (now digitized by my wife). The car behind it was also mine. 1950 Buick Dynaflow Special. 13 mpg on the freeway. Unfortunately, I think this is the only picture I have of it.

    New cars; ho hum

I had a Jag Mark II. Its first owner was a doctor who got all the options, including chrome wire spoke wheels with spin-on hubs. The sexiest car ever made. Wind out fourth gear and then, yeah, I've got one more (electric overdrive). Couldn't wear a leather jacket. Leather against leather...

Converting to an induction stove top

I could get the plate red hot and the bread smoking in under a minute if I turned it up to #10. I set it at #1 and flipped it over "by smell." Took a couple of minutes. After I do it a few more times I'll know what to set the timer at. The timer is only whole minutes, so the temp setting...

Ford lehman 120 jabsco pump bolt size

I replaced mine with 6 thumb screws so that I didn't need a tool to take off the cover. I bought a little box of them (because that's what I found searching the internet). Send me a direct email and I'm sure we can figure something out if you want to go that direction. Mine pump is the...

    Corroded snap fasteners

Get one of the crazy expensive snap removal tools. When apart, get some bronze wool and clean both surfaces of the corrosion, then use one of the snap lubricants mentioned above (or Chap Stick if you are frugal). And always use the snap removal tool in the future.

Who uses a/c in the PNW?

Never had it and never needed it. I was a live aboard on a dark steel hull for years and never thought about it. The heat that the hull could soak in above the waterline was offset by the heat lost under the waterline. And I had opening portholes. That was back in the olden days with the...

Converting to an induction stove top

Most cookware now says on the bottom whether it is induction compatible and a surprising number now are. Nobody seems to remember the early complaints about microwaves (you need special cookware!!), we have just adapted to not putting metal pots (and lots of other things) in a microwave. Same...

Converting to an induction stove top

I'm learning more about my induction stove top every day. First, not all bread needs to be baked in an oven. The other day I made some English muffins on the stove top. One for breakfast and a second for a sandwich at lunch. Total amperage was 12 Amp hours, but I'm sure I could get that down...

    Switch from electric to propane

I can't answer the "financial efficiency" questions because I removed my generator right after removing the propane stove. My alternator charges my batteries when I cruise. Both of those were purchased by the prior owner, so I can't amortize acquisition costs into some sort of financial...

    Welding a manifold on Lehman 120 2715E

Although the saltwater isn't supposed to get up to the manifold (only the elbow), the picture makes it look like this happened, maybe a few times. The rust through is right inside the low point of the manifold. The saltwater drys out every time the engine is run, but only the water evaporates...

    Switch from electric to propane

That's funny, in a sad way.

The long route to a steady diesel tach

I'm seriously thinking of changing my tachometer because of the hour meter. It is a mechanical meter that reads tenths of an hour, but clicks every few seconds to keep track. After doing some engine room soundproofing, the clicking started to bother me. So I switched the lower tach with the...

    Traveling to Canada

I just bought a Canada flag (drapeau du Canada) from a shop in Cowichan. I had looked in a bunch of places (Wallmart, Canadian Tire). Lots to choose from, but I only found one shop that had the right size courtesy flag for my boat (9"x18") and was Canadian made. The many others were Chinese...

    Engine Room Safety

It is interesting that Racor has fancy heat reflectors available to cover the fairly thick plastic bowls for fire protection (ABYC requirement on new construction?), yet the engine room can have 20 quarts of oil in very thin plastic jugs. My oil jugs are only "protected" by plastic milk crates...

    Amp hour shunt melted

When I replaced my amp meter with a volt meter (same brand/style fit the dash hole), I saw that the old amp meter had a nice big unfused wire running from the ER to the helm, then to the upper helm, then to ground. Not something I really wanted on a 40 year old boat given that the information...

Oceana, Sea Horse, Clipper, Senator 30/31 Etc

I have 2 burners which can both operate at the same time. My only real complaint is that the burners are way too powerful. Each automatically comes on at #5 (medium setting) and the burners "power share," meaning that if one is turned up to #6 the other one goes down to #4. While this might...

Oceana, Sea Horse, Clipper, Senator 30/31 Etc

I haven't found a good solution yet. I tried a Coleman stovetop oven, but the induction cook top turns off automatically before it gets hot enough for the Coleman. Tried a cast iron Dutch oven, using an induction hob upside down on top, but only baked bread a couple of times. I'm living...

Oceana, Sea Horse, Clipper, Senator 30/31 Etc

Just came across a sister ship anchored at Sidney Spit last weekend. Owner said it was a Chien Hwa 31. I can't find that anywhere on the internet. The boat (out of Anacortes) looked and sounded like it was identical, but I didn't go inside and didn't take a picture. I did get a picture of a...

    Clothing Optional Cruising??

I admit I didn't read the thread. Simply put I couldn't care less about exposed skin EXCEPT when it comes to footwear. Now that "summer" is here in the PNW, I saw it again. Two couples come in on a sailboat and a guy is running around on deck wearing some kind of sandal things. Two women on...
