Over propped. Is it really a problem?

Ask the yard and/or the local prop shop how much to remove and examine. My RPMs were okay, but the price was really nothing to have it pulled and examined. Turns out the shop wasn't that local, but they came by once a week on a scheduled route so I didn't have to deliver it to Tacoma. Because...

    Cruising the French canals

Photos of our trip on the River Lot are in this album on another boating website. http://www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_albumName=The-River-Lot&op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php

    Cruising the French canals

We have used Locaboat for the Canal du Nivernais and the River Lot. We specifically avoided the Canal Midi because of reports of busy times with larger and faster vessels. It is used as a short-cut for yachts from the Med. Canal du Nivernais is a slow cruise with many, many locks (112 total)...

    Sewing Machine?

In addition to basting tape for those w/o a walking foot machine, be sure to have a "seam jack" on hand. Also called a hump jumper, seam jumper, etc., it allows you to easily go over multiple layers when they intersect. Most good machines can sew together 3 or 4 layers no problem, but when it...

    Stability. A brief discussion.

Interesting that it says to measure maximum beam at deck height to conduct the test. Then it says to make a calculation as to a point above the waterline to not exceed during the roll test. That point is well below deck height. So what is special about deck height if the test never goes near...

    Stability. A brief discussion.

The last post in my "anti-roll bag" post here on TF shows the use of a phone app to easily and accurately measure the roll period over time. My goal was to see whether my anti-roll bag affected the roll period by changing (decelerating) the roll at a certain point. Got distracted by going...

    Tool Set Recommendations?

My surveyor looked into the couple of tool boxes left onboard by the PO and said there must be over $1K of tools. Yeah, but it was a few sockets, a few allen wrenches, a single 24" giant box wrench, lots of oddball things, including some that I didn't recognize. Turns out the big wrench...

    FL 120 expansion tank repair

Interesting corrosion. My Lehman is +42 years old with +10,000 hours. I didn't see any pitting in the tank when I pulled it off. I've had the hose off several times and didn't even see that the original red paint had failed. If prior owners used antifreeze in the system, the anticorrosion...

FL 120 injection pump fill level stripped

Another concern would be why did the original fail? I suppose it is possible that somebody turned it the wrong way (with a big wrench). It is also possible that the oil change was neglected for so long that the fill plug corroded (which seems almost impossible). If corrosion was the problem...

    Chinese diesel heater

    8. Be realistic with the length of duct/exhaust. These heaters were designed primarily for the commercial trucking market. They can heat the cab of a truck. Don't expect them to operate efficiently if running 30 feet of heating duct and 10 feet of exhaust tubing.

    Water in Gauge

I've seen condensation in some of my guages because of temp/humidity conditions, but nothing like the pictures. That much moisture has to be a breach of the front seal (assuming these are exposed to weather). No need to drill any holes as a fairly large one already exists if the gauge is...

Ray McCormack Sunseeker 54 delivery to Hawaii currently underway

Something about this thread reminds me of Evel Knievel. And Annie Edson Taylor. Taylor, a 63 year-old school teacher, was the first successful "captain" of a barrel going over Niagra Falls. She did it for the money and fame, both of which mainly eluded her after the feat. Of course, she...

    Coronial Inquiry-Sinking of Eliza 1

Remember Ralph Nadar's book Unsafe at Any Speed, containing a scathing critique of the Chevy Corvair? The coroner's report sounds like a sequel, Unsafe at Any Price. What spooked me was the picture taken bow on in post #103. It could have been taken with a fish-eye lens and that is what makes...

    Chinese diesel heater

Exactly what I was posting. Look at the Chinese manufacturer in the fine print. Same as my $106 heater. They claim that they will answer your questions if you have problems, which might be why they charge the additional $700. Your choice.

I'm in Belize for the solstice. A little surprised that you could get a picture of me on the beach.

    Utility budget for coffee?

I'm marketing an unnecessarily complex gadget for first-world coffee-adicted techno-nerds. Place expensive sustainably sourced coffee beans in the special container. Stepping on the container repeatedly creates heat that custom roasts the beans at the same time as pulverising them to the...

    Chinese diesel heater

Mine was sold as a Warmtoo brand, but is the common orange and black 8kw 12v model. It has been "rebranded" by many sellers under different names. Which makes the anti-Chinese patent infringement claim even sillier. Chinese made parts can be rebadged in Germany with a name like"Glockenspeil"...

    Avoiding log strikes

Now is an exiting time to take the Seattle/Bremerton fast foot ferry (37 knt hydrofoil cat). It feels like they speed up to keep on schedule while dancing around all of the logs produced by the king tides. Makes me wish I was wearing my PFD.

Still working on the Tung Hwa Senator refurb

Check out the Sailrite videos on YouTube on "30 minute cushions." The Sailrite site has a pattern making app that simplifies things. One of the directions to really follow is the use of basting tape. It is double-sided tape that when sold as basting tape is expensive. When sold as "1/4 inch...

2023: biggest seas encountered this year?

Over 2,000 miles this year, but mostly inside. Beaufort is only half the story there, with current making up the other half. Made it up through Johnstone narrows and out in to lower Queen Charlotte Sound by late afternoon. I had done my go/no go calculation and planned on continuing north to...

    Utility budget for coffee?

The first piece of toast is by "smell". Set the induction burner on one or two and watch how long it takes. Then set it on one or two and set the timer for that amount of time for the other side or the next piece.Works the same for tortillas, English muffins, naan, etc. The only issue I've had...

    Utility budget for coffee?

Next to our perforated steel toaster, shown above, is our induction espresso pot. It is a four cup espresso pot, which means it makes two cups of coffee Americano. Get it ready (usually the night before) and then just press level 2 for 5 minutes in the morning and, boom pow, coffee's ready. I...

    MPPT sizing

And on the water is the perfect place to exceed standard test conditions. I went 20% over with an MPPT for a south facing solar panel on our beach patio. The controller stopped working after a few days and I called the vendor. He asked if there was snow on the ground. No, just smooth water...

    Cruising realities

My wife and I did +2,500 nm last year. That should qualify us as cruisers. We barely got north of Klemtu, which is only about 450 miles away from home port as the crow flies. We could do the same area in British Columbia for the next 5 years and not see it all. First thing people always ask...
