    Starside's Electric Conversion

I'm somewhat new here (both on the Forum and on the water), but I wanted to show the process of converting a boat to an electric propulsion. For those of you who are interested, this is for YOU. I know that not everyone would go this route, but for the few who are considering...here it is in...

Maiden Voyage and delivery...Oriental to Washington NC....>

Calm waters for the maiden voyage on a gorgeous boat! Congrats & bet it feels great to have her safely docked near home. :-) How did she handle?

That's a good name esp if the original Heron have you joy & many years of fun. I changed my boat's name - her last name was Red Herring which didn't suit me. Her original 1930 name was Aquillo which means North Wind. I then stumbled on a Coast Guard list from 1930 of all the private vessels...

She's beautiful, Heron. What's her name?

    Electric generator/charger?

Okay, I'll start another thread. I meet the yard next week to look at placement & will then start taking pics. Elco said they will also post the conversion on their website. They are pleased to have an Antique Elco converting. TheI actual conversion won't start until December. I'll post the...

    Electric generator/charger?

Frustrating initially, yes, but also humorous at this point. I think what it really says is that this is a hot topic. I was thinking about doing a separate thread of the actual conversion for those who were interested, but now I'm not sure...may get too many negative responses, so think...

Can no one see my responses? Indeed. :-)

    Electric generator/charger?

Thank you, Mahal. I get it. Interesting, though, that my initial question as a newbie (& somewhat Green (pun intended) cruiser) who asked a simple - perhaps naive question - gets her entire thread hijacked. Too funny!!!

Heron, have u ever seen the Lyman w flybridge on her hardtop? I was looking at that before I found Starside. Think- Crab Pots on the Chesapeake! The Fly Bridge is mandatory!!! I can't mess up my lines w Starside but I still look at Lyman's as my eventual 2nd boat (if I win the lottery, of course!)

    Electric generator/charger?

I think the technology is coming. Give it a few years... I suspect the batteries will also get smaller w longer range & less expensive. When it's time for me to get new batteries, I bet they will be cheaper & better n range & safety. It's just a matter of time for the Green technology to catch...

    Electric generator/charger?

I personally think electric boats are the future of boating. In other countries, they are much more popular. Even here on the Chesapeake, you see Duffy boats everywhere. Different strokes for different folks. No disrespect intended. :-)

    Electric generator/charger?

Thank you for the article. I think some folks are just against electric motors. I've been lying low cuz I'm converting now & didn't want the negativity. Btw, the extra battery pack has me thinking that that's a better alternative. I meet the yard next week to go over the placement of...

Ahhhh there's nothing more exciting than getting the boat of your dreams! Congrats! & when you come up to the Chesapeake, send a shout-out! Would love to say Hey! Your Boat's got gorgeous lines, btw. A real head-turner! :-)

    Chesapeake Newbie w/antique vessel

I look forward to cruising the bay this Spring/summer. Starside will be completed by then & I really hope to connect with others who cruise the area. So next year, I'll post another thread in People & Places, so hopefully I can meet some of you - or at least do a cruise-by! Thanks again for...

    Electric generator/charger?

I must admit that I do get a little confused by so many who seem to think I am harming Starside. I've done an amazing restoration, complete with refastening using Monel fasteners, not to mention repairing rot, frame boards, new rub & spray rails, stuffing box, paint, varnish, transom repairs &...

Thank you, Marin. My system is 12v but I'll ask my yard crew about that. Maybe I could have a few golf cart batteries as my backup. Love that it takes less space. Thank you.

    Electric generator/charger?

Thank you for asking, Billyfeet! My boat originally had a 3-cyl Perkins diesel -- I cruised her for a year and the engine was fine, although very loud. Still, it's a hardy engine and I've already gotten a few offers on it. That said, I'm going electric for several reasons: (1) my boat is...

    Electric generator/charger?

Popular topic! Just so you'll know, I chose the Elco motor because my boat is an Elco & I have a strong commitment to the company, obviously. Re wind, I asked about that & my yard crew dismissed it. They also dismissed solar. They have my best interest in mind, including my budget! The...

    The Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake is the 2nd largest estuary on the planet, and the waterfowl that migrates here in the winter months are breathtaking. As a new cruiser, so far I've cruised to St. Michaels MD from Galesville and visited many of the rivers mid-bay. By land I've been to Chestertown during the...

    Electric generator/charger?

Not avoiding you...just at work... Re the portable "electric generator," I was asking if there was such a thing. I know there are portable gas and diesel generators, but I was just curious - and if you look through the beginning of the thread, you'll see that that was already discussed and...
