    Starside's Electric Conversion

LOL I'm being selfish mostly bc I wanted to cross the Bay for the classic boat show at St. Mikes to show her off! but I'm truly excited about having Starside back in the water & look forward to exploring her new engine. Next year, I'll dock her on the other side of the Bay so I can get to...

    Starside's Electric Conversion

The electrician said although I can get up to 6.2 knots, it's not rec. I need to stay at 5.5 knots & have to watch amps as it relates to battery life. I also can only use 50% of my battery charge, which was a surprise to me. This effects her range - more like 2 hours instead of 4 which I...

    Starside's Electric Conversion

Re the conversion, I met w the electrician & got an education on my electrical systems... 12 volts 72 volts 120 volts. Each must be handled separately.

Another... I'm looking into getting a marine wood stove for her galley. I can upload more pics if you'd like of her head & close ups of her berth & cabin. I'm thinking of turning her head into a closet w her original sink but w a compost barrel (I'm from WV & they have these cool compost...

Yes & happy to be back in the water. Engine still needs to be calibrated, but I'll be cruising soon.

Thanks, Pacemaker. Is it just me, or has it been forever? :-)

    Starside's Electric Conversion

Okay I'm posting this pic again because I see the other 2 batteries on the port side under the passenger seat. Or is that a tool box? (Tiny pics they sent me but I'm going next week so will confirm...)

    Starside's Electric Conversion

Yes, I'm very interested in knowing her range & how she performs. Per Elco, she'll also be much easier to handle. The sea trial is for 4 hours! I wanted to do it myself but they wouldn't let me! Said they have to do adjustments enroute. I then realized they were all probably looking forward to...

    Starside's Electric Conversion

They said they managed to hook the batteries up without me having to disconnect it when I do need access to the stuffing box. It will still be heavy but being able to keep it attached was a good call on their part.

    Starside's Electric Conversion

We are finally making progress after a long lull at the yard. They got busy but are now finishing up my boat, hopefully for an early May launch. Here's a pic of the batteries & access hole to the stuffing box.

    Bow or Stern thrusters?

You hit it on the nail for me here. I plan on practicing first for a few months but I don't want to not cruise bc I'm still scared of hitting things. The bolt-on thrusters seem like the right fix, if I go that route. For now, I'm going to practice, practice, practice. :-)

    Bow or Stern thrusters?

Thanks for this info. Starside is only glassed below the waterline & it was done by another owner over 10 years ago. My understanding is that glassing old boats requires great skill, but when done right, it is a life saver for the boat & ensures longevity. In fact, many boat yards have said...

    Bow or Stern thrusters?

I'll take you up on those lessons! I need them. My boat is at the yard til mid-May, after which you will see me all over Galesville practicing... Good point re fenders. I got 4 big ones but think I need more!

    Bow or Stern thrusters?

Thanks, Marin! Funny re fenders, b/c I just ordered 4 really big ones! I figure if push came to shove, I'd line my boat with them. Thanks for the tip re the Grand Banks forum. My wooden hull is an issue, and after my restoration, I wouldn't want to punch holes in her. Granted, I'm...

    Bow or Stern thrusters?

Wow, wonderful advice here - thank you! -- and I'll try to answer some of the questions that were raised as well. First, I do plan on taking the operating course, so I don't plan to do anything until after I've developed some confidence with docking. However, I cruised last year and found...

    Bow or Stern thrusters?

I'm seriously considering a thruster for easier handling - I'm a lone cruiser in a single screw & get tossed around quite easily even in low swells. My max speed is 7 knots, plus I'm a novice. But here's my question - is it best to have a bow or stern thruster? Or both? My boat's an antique...

    Show your helm!

Yeah, I'm keeping her original & it works for me cuz I even prefer paper charts over the fancy stuff. Her original compass is 2 degrees off, but since I know that, I compensate. But I will add that I also have a handheld radio & GPS...just in case I fall overboard or something. Some of these...
