1993 Willard Launch / Patrol Boat, Anacortes WA, $100K

Larry and Peter -- Thanks for your replies. I agree 100% with both of you that with respect to recreational vessels fire retardant resins were eliminated after blister problems appeared in the '70s and '80s. However, it's not clear to me whether it was eliminated in the construction of...

1993 Willard Launch / Patrol Boat, Anacortes WA, $100K

If I were considering buying this vessel one of the questions I would want to know is if the fire retardant resins used in the hull are of the same type that caused the blister issues in the Valiant Yachts originally manufactured by Uniflite in Washington state. The fire retardant resin used by...

    self-insured anyone?

No disagreement with what you said. However, the lawyers who settle the claim at the courthouse steps engaged in some back and forth just to get to the point of settlement. There aren't many non-lawyers who are in a position to do that.

    self-insured anyone?

On the subject of self-insuring: I'm not an insurance expert by any means and certainly not an expert on marine insurance. However, I believe one major advantage of acquiring insurance from a carrier versus self-insuring is that the insurance company (at their expense) will vigorously...

    Documentation

It's hard to believe that sending letters that pretend to be from an agency of government is legal. However, I'm not a lawyer and don't have a professionally educated point of view on this.

    Documentation

I received the same solicitation from the same outfit a few days ago. It makes an excellent attempt to appear to be from the U.S.C.G.. It even uses an email address of NVDC*******.us address, thereby trying to look like an actual address of the C.G. renewal center in Falling Waters W...

    Are paper charts still relevant?

Lightning is still potentially a terminal (no pun intended) experience for your navigational and communication electronics. Unless you have local knowledge of all the areas you intend to navigate, in my opinion, having paper charts as backup is essential.

Listen up Canadians! Canada Proposes new tax for boaters!

I guess I am the contrarian here except for OldDan1943. My belief is that naming fees for a popular cause is just window dressing for another way to raise money that usually does little to nothing to remedy the problem it proposes to address. And OldDan is right - $10 is likely only the...

    New or rebuilt alternators?

I'll also chime in with my positive experience with Leese Neville. About 10 years ago I had an underperforming alternator on a sailboat auxilliary engine. It was working too hard to replenish a large (840 a/h) house bank whenever batteries had discharged less than half and was running hot most...

Haul Out Thru Hulls Close or open?

Just one practical issue: Regardless of what you do for the longer term, at least at haulout, I recommend closing all seacocks leading to sink drains. Otherwise the yard's pressure washing is highly likely to shoot a large stream of crud right back up the drain and into your boat's interior...

    Depowering a Turbo DD?

Yes, what you say is totally logical with the exception that low and high HP engines will each be matched with propellers that allow the engines to reach their rated maximum RPM. So the fuel consumption at a specified engine RPM will not be the same for low and high HP engines, which naturally...

    Depowering a Turbo DD?

Many years back I had a Bertram 42 also with twin 6-71 TI engines. They were rated at 335 HP each. These Detroits, in addition to being supercharged, were turbocharged. My Detroit Diesel mechanic, who had decades of experience with Detroits told me he could increase power to 450 HP (IIRC)...

    Tipping?

In the yards I have used, the employees who are exceptional are recognized by the yard and their fellow workers for their skill and are compensated accordingly by the yard. If they are not, they will be recruited at higher wages by other yards. This means that the market adjusts wages to...

    Tipping?

I think I am in the minority on this subject, but I disagree in general about tipping for several reasons: Firstly, in respect to yardwork, I am already paying $80-100/hour for this work and have every reason to expect quality work in exchange for the price paid; secondly, are we paying for...

Need help bleeding my Yanmar 4JH3-TE

Thanks for the last two replies gents. As you can read in my last posting before this one (#33 above), the problem wasn't bleeding the system, but in stopping air that was leaking into the system from the previous owner's use of an incorrect primary filter element. I had originally thought...

    Window template

If existing windows are still intact and templates are not otherwise available, an identical currently installed window could be removed and used to make a template. I did that successfully many years ago, making a port-side window from a starboard-side existing window, by reversing the glass...

Need help bleeding my Yanmar 4JH3-TE

The epilogue: My problem is solved. It seems that the boatyard or owner had replaced the original Yanmar primary fuel filter which was part #4230-0100 with an incorrect filter. This was partly understandable because that Yanmar part # was discontinued. I now have a Racor R20P (30 micron)...

Need help bleeding my Yanmar 4JH3-TE

After looking at many pictures online, I think the filter assembly is a Yanmar relabelled Racor 230R10, which takes the Racor R10T filter element. But, like so much else right now, there seem to be local shortages of the R10T filters which I believe are a fairly commonly inventoried part - in...

Need help bleeding my Yanmar 4JH3-TE

What you wrote is logical but it is hard to understand how a leak could occur in the plumbing after the secondary. Also, the problem occurred after I changed the primary, so logically that is the source. It is also suspicious that the replacement primary filter package included no perimeter...

Need help bleeding my Yanmar 4JH3-TE

No, not sure that is the problem, but I don't have on hand the fuel hoses and fittings necessary to route around the primary to test that right now. However, once again about a 1/2 hour ago I cracked the injector nuts after re-bleeding the primary and secondary filters. With the engine...
