    Genset cost per KW hour

I think most of us here realize that the best set up is to pair your generator with a good size battery bank and inverter. We have two 110v refrigerators aboard, plus the other required 110v stuff like TV, coffemaker, range, and water heater. We coordinate the use of the heavy duty stuff...

    Genset cost per KW hour

Nope. It sits on the swim platform when we are using it, plugged right into the regular shore power cord with a 30 to 15 amp adapter.

    Does this make me cheap?

We used to do that when we had a 24 ft bayliner with a 55 gal tank. No way would I schlep fuel for our Mainship. Too much hassle to save a few $$.

    Genset cost per KW hour

Art We have a honda as well a an 8kw Onan. The honda will push both my battery chargers (40 amp pro mariner and 50 amp Heart freedom 10). It will also run a single burner on the princess range, but not while charging the batteries. It is a great little unit to have on board when you don't...

    Marina considerations

If you aren't going to be visiting the boat during the winter, have it hauled. Too many things can go wrong with a boat in the water. Sinking, fire, damage from the dock. When your boat is on the hard, all systems decomissioned, and shrink wrapped, there is very little to worry about. Also...

Nice paint job! I'll bet that cost all of 20k in itself..

    Genset cost per KW hour

So if you run a generator on the hook for 4 or 5 hours a day, you might burn 3 gallons of diesel, maybe $12 or $13. Tie up to a mooring, $25. Stay at a marina, $80. We like our cold beer and hot water, running the generator is a small price to pay. Price per KW is meaningless for us.

    Under propped?

Our CAT 3116 has a recreational "E" rating, max RPM 2800, cruise 2400. However the 2400 spec is way to high for how we use the boat. At 2400 she is plowing along at 10 knots trying to get up on plane, burning 9.7 GPH. We have found our sweet spot a 1600-1800, which gets us 7 or 8 knots burning a...

    On getting "waked" / vandalism

We got untied once on the Erie Canal at 4am. Luckily someone saw the perps do this and woke us up and grabbed our lines before we floated into the lift bridge. We now use a cable and lock when we cruise the canal in all but the busiest of ports. There seem to be a lot of bored teenagers...

    Mainship fuel tanks

Our 97 Mainship 350 has valves for the feed and return lines and the generator. All are on the top of the tanks, nothing on the bottom.

My Albin, tell us about yours

We have one of the first new Mainships, 1997 hull #32 (called a 350 in the day). So far no rot or soft decks anywhere. Maybe still too new, but we are very happy with the construction of our boat. Biggest issue I have is the location of the generator under the cockpit. Almost totally...

Heart Interface Link 2000 and Freedom 20 not communicating

Try disconnecting the Freedom 20 from the battery bank, let it sit for a few mins, then reconnect. That always works for me when my Link 2000 goes funny.

    Hailing port letters...

In NY, mostly for the bank's benefit if you have a loan on the boat. In NY, you are required to register your boat with the state regardless of documentation and display the state sticker (no reg numbers). Sales tax is always paid, no exemptions for documented boats. We do not pay personal...

    Hull cleaner

No shaving for sure, but we get a chalky build up on the bootstripe and part of the hull from the minerals in the water here, especially on the side that faces out to the river and gets wave action. I found Lime-Away to work like nobody's business on this type of discloration. Spray it...

    Older and affordable trailerable trawlers?

Vote for Nimble - we see them all the time up here on the canal, great little boats fort the price. With a 50hp Honda, they can cruise at around 7 or 8 knots burning about 1 or 2 gallons an hour.

You can drill holes in the legs of the Baby Q. I mounted mine on my transom that way. I also run it off a 20lb tank which lasts forever.

Our last Magma totally rusted out on the inside in less than 5 years. Their quality has gone way down. We replaced it with a Weber Baby Q.

    We need a generator

We do the same - main gen is a 8kw 3600rpm ONAN which is loud and unreliable. Honda 2k always starts and runs like nobody's business. And we use the Honda as a backup power supply for our house via a transfer switch in case of power failures. The best thing about these little units is that if...

    Air draft Mainship 40

I hear you - we are in the same boat. Let me know when you plan on passing through, we are at the very western end of the canal on the Niagara River. Would be glad to assist you with anything you need. -ron

    Air draft Mainship 40

You will be fine. We have a Mainship 350, air draft with our mast down and bridge enclosure up is exactly 15' Your enclosure may be higher if you have one. We have cruised the entire length of the canal twice over with no issues. Lowest bridge is about 15.5', and that is at high water...

    wi-fi antenna

I have the same unit and it works great - will at least double or triple your coverage. Not as good as a rogue or other external based antenna, but for the money great investment. Nice thing about the alfa is that you can take it with you shore side. Unit fits in the palm of your hand.

    Melt Down Anybody??

Low voltage will do that - happened to us last year at a state marina. Everyone had air cons running, we were seeing less than 100 volts coming into our boat. Went out to dinner, left our air conditioner on. Came back to a fried inlet that looked just like the one above. CB on the dock never...
