    Cost to run my generator.

They work great for charging batteries. Ours will push the 50 amp Heart Freedom 10 charger/inverter and our Pro Mariner 40 amp charger both at the same time. We've used our Honda to charge our batteries many times with no issues. It burns way less fuel than our main 8kw Onan Genset and is...

    Air Draft and Bridge Openings

There are 17 lift bridges on the western end of the Erie Canal (Lockport to Fairport). All of them need to be lifted except for the very smallest of crafts (like maybe a canoe). The operators each run 2 or 3 bridges with a few exceptions. This means that they have to jump in a car and run to the...

    Women in boating and here.....

My wife is great at locking, anchoring (she mans the helm) and steering a straight line but thats about it. We are both happy with that, she loves boating and is a fantastic chef. We have done a few 1,000 mile plus trips and it has always worked fine for us. As far as forums go, forget it...

What magazines do Inmates here read?

Power and Motoryacht has Capt Bill Pike who owns a classic 32' Grand Banks. He does alot of articles about maintaining/upgrading it and the cruises he takes. Granted, alot of them are about this or that new product that some advertiser gave him to try out. Still pretty good stuff we can all...

    Hemingway Classic in the Yard

Pretty cool, they even have a Papa look-alike driving her. Needs those huge outriggers to really set it off.

    Battery (?) problem

+1 on GC batteries. We are getting 5-6 years out of ours. 4 batteries, split to 2 banks. We use for both house and starting. Simple, cheap and it works for us.

    Mainship Trim Tabs

The Mainship 350/390 is different from most other boats in that the swim platform is actually an extension of the hull. Mainship embedded the tabs in this extension, not outboard of it as most boats have the tabs. In essence, the extension is one massive trim tab. The tabs on this boat...

    Mainship Trim Tabs

They are probably electric. The tabs on our '97 350 are Lenco electric tabs. If your controls for them have Lenco stampet on them, yours are the same. No fluid. I wouldn't worry much about them, they are pretty useless on this boat.

    350/390 versus 390

Yep. The boat was always 39' LOA, but the hull (minus pulpit and swim platform) is 35', which is why they labeled the first ones 350's.

    350/390 versus 390

Same exact boat. 1997 and 1998 models were labeled "350 Trawlers" In 1999, the marketing department decided to make the boat 4' longer without changing a darn thing and so was born the Mainship 390.

What magazines do Inmates here read?

Power and Motoryacht. Geared more towards the high end, but usually contains some good articles on maintenance and cruising. Watch for a free subscription, I have been getting it for no cost since 1987.

    Land crusing with a boat

Remember seeing that Mainship on the news. If I recall correctly, it was damaged by Hurricane Frances in 2004 which hit Labor Day weekend. As a side note, I believe one of the Yahoo Mainship group members (Larry from Utah) bought this boat and rebuilt it from the keel up.

    390 deck joint

You sure this was a 390? The fuel fills are on the side of the boat, not on the deck.

    390 deck joint

Sling placement is clearly marked. We have never had an issue with haulouts, and we have one of the first boats. (#32). We get hauled every year for winter storage. Could it be that the travel lift being used for the boat that had issues maybe was too small? The 350/390 is quite beamy at...

    Cat 3116 Engine problems

We've always used Rotella T. CAT didn't come out with the single viscosity reccomendation until quite a few years after our engine was in service. So she grew up on 15w40 with no ill effects that I can see. We have been feeding her straight 30w for the last 8 years or so. I don't remember...

    Cat 3116 Engine problems

The biggest difference is that they mysteriously gained 4 feet without getting any longer... In 1997/98, the model was a 35' trawler, labeled Mainship 350. In 1999, it became a 39' trawler labeled as a Mainship 390. Marketing aside, one big difference you will notice is that they removed...

    Cat 3116 Engine problems

The after cooler issue is unique to the 3126, not the 3116. The 3126 uses raw water cooling for the aftercooler, the 3116 uses engine coolant. This change provided for more HP, but also increased the risk of corrosion.

    Cat 3116 Engine problems

The 3116 they put in the Mainships are great. Ours is a 1997, 2k hours with 0 problems since new. We run her easy, 2000 rpm and less. Would not hesitate to buy another.

They are still all different here in the Northeast. Pigtails can be your best friend, we also carry a 30 male to twin 30 female for those times there is only one outlet for 2 boats...

    Why Boardings?

We are as well - Canada border is less than 100' off my marina entrance. I can't leave my marina without entering Canadian waters. We have tons of Border Patrol boats on the Niagara River, they will target Canada boats in US waters to make sure they are properly checked in, but that's about...

    Why Boardings?

Same here - all the LEO's and Coast Guard around here seem to be attracted to jet ski's and runabouts. We have never been boarded.

    Genset cost per KW hour

Capt Tom - what size AC? We have a 16k and 12k BTU, the honda won't push either one. My last boat had a 10k unit that the honda would run. I think that is about the limit unless you have one of those slow start capacitors.

    Genset cost per KW hour

The main will heat water while we are underway, the generator has no such hookup. However, consider while we are running that generator, the batteries are getting a 90 amp charge, the stove is cooking breakfast and the water is heating for a morning shower. Lot of co-generation going on there...
