Potential to close part of Great Loop

From that study: "According to the study, a complete physical separation would prevent 95-100 percent of Asian carp from entering Lake Michigan." Seems to me like those carp are going to make it sooner or later, regardless of what the Corp does. It will only take 2 randy carp to make into...

    Swim platform light

+ 1 on these lights. I've got 4 on my boat and they do a decent job, batteries last forever. You can find them anywhere. I screwed mine in, as the adhesive tape they come with isn't very good. The nice thing about them is that they pop off the mounts real easy, you can use them as a little...

    Pics in ads.

We have been looking at condos in Florida, and the pictures they show are just as bad. 16 photos of the club pool and golf course with 4 dark blurry photos of the condo. I told my wife I think I have found a new career as a real estate photograher.

    Survival---16 MONTHS adrift

Latest I heard was that they suspect he may have made landfall on one the uninhibited islands near there. He may have hung out there for quite some time before setting sail again and ending up where he did.

    Coolant - scam?

Same here. Switched to the CAT ELC rated coolant 8 years ago. No need for periodic testing or charging. Just flush and replace every 5 years. We are running a CAT 3116, so your mileage may vary.

    First Purchase Advice

I couldn't imagine someone allowing you to do that, but if you could, more power to you! We did that after we closed on our previous boat before transporting it home. Still found issues on the 3 day cruise home, but nothing major.

Looking for input/advice on Erie and Champlain Canals

We are at the western end of the Erie Canal on the Niagara River. We have done the entire system twice over plus some. One thing to be aware of is that sections of the canal are frequently closed, sometimes for weeks at a time due to high water. You need to be fairly flexible with your...

    First Purchase Advice

The older Mainships are great, watch for soft decks which seems to be the only big issue with them. The Perkins 165 NA or 200hp turbo engines will run forever with decent maintenance. If you can pony up a few more bucks, take a look at the later model 350/390 trawlers which are the next...

    Rideau Canal cruising

We did Rochester to Smiths Falls and then a few days in the 1000 Islands and back in two weeks. To go to Ottawa and back in two weeks from Wilson would really be pushing it.

    Engine hours?

Regarding the CAT 3116, we have this engine in our Mainship, 2000 hours with no issues. The soft block problem was a 3126 issue. You can read some good information about the engines in this thread from the Sea Ray board: Cat 3116 350HP - Good, Yes or No? [Archive] - Club Sea Ray

Rated total number of revolutions for a small block Chevy?

Very true. The manual for the CAT 3116 in our Mainship suggests major overhaul at 30,000 gallons. Considering we burn about 300 gallons a year, we should be good for the next 100 years!

The perfect boat, who builds one with these specs?

The Mainship 350/390 and 400 trawlers will cover all your bases except Full Displacement and 2 heads. Bonus is that you will come in well below 275k. (used)

    UV water filters

We had a similar unit made by Culligan in my first house to disinfect the well water. Depending on the mineral content of the water you put through it, you may have to clean the clear quartz tube occaisionally. We were in a high iron area, and the tube would cloud up. I think I cleaned it...

Another LED expensive bulb vs cheapie ebay/chinese question re: CCCV

I didn't realize you were taking about the strip lights, can't you get them in a 110v version? For the batteries, if you are plugged into shore power, all your DC drains would come right from the charger until you exceeded it's amperage, so really no impact on your batteries.

Another LED expensive bulb vs cheapie ebay/chinese question re: CCCV

For $1.30 each or less for the cheapos, I would just buy them with a bunch of spares. They burn out, you replace them. No worries. Heck, the 10w haolgen G4 bulbs in my boat cost 3x as much and I seem to lose at least one a year..
