TF Gathering in SE Florida 2019

Hi all. I saw that our names were not on the list from Ft Pierce marina, and called them today to confirm. They have us reserved, and with the Trawler Forum group. Oddly, they said that they had 4 reservations including ours, but they gave me both personal names and boat names, and except for...

Now Plan to be Active User

A fairly reasonable place to put her on the hard near Ft Pierce is at Indiantown Marina, west of the St Lucie locks, and about 20' above sea level. They also have a hurricane haul out program. JohnS

Newbie to trawler world wanting to learn.....

Welcome Aboard It sounds like you will have time to figure out what will work for you in a trawler or cruising boat. As boat search 101, and others will tell you, the cost differential between a long range coastal cruiser and an open ocean passagemaker is exponential, not additional. Coastal...

    Removing wooden plugs

I would recommend the Bosch screwdriver bits, as they seem to be a better quality of steel, and the phillips bits have roughened edges to lessen slipping. Replace them as they wear. They are cheaper than the time it takes to drill out, plug, and redrill a stripped screw. JohnS

    Displacement or Planing Hull?

Welcome aboard. Experienced mariners are always welcome and helpful. The forum has "boat search 101" which I found very helpful. Check the library and thread search functions to see earlier discussions on this topic. There are many opinions in the forums, so it may come down to how you most...

Welcome Aboard It may seem backwards, but you may want to determine what you want to do with the boat, and how many of the family and friends will want to go with you, and for how long, before you start narrowing your range of possible boat types and makes. I would guess that some of your kids...

    Grand Banks 42

Welcome aboard, and good luck in your search. The GB 42 is a beautiful and capable boat. There are several well populated threads on the Forum that may help you. Boat search 101, the Grand Banks section under makes, and individual threads about buying, using, or selling GB 42s. The Library...

Crossing the Pacific on 47' 1972 power vessel

I don't know about the larger boats, but the Cheoy Lee Association page has a note about a Cheoy Lee 40 LRC delivering on her own bottom from Hong Kong to Florida via tge Atlantic. No telling if she had alterations such as heavier windows, etc. Bus as the owner of a sistership, I am happy to...

Need Some Advice From South Louisiana People and Beyond.

When we started looking for a boat I spent a lot of time searching online. My usual suspects were boats.com, boattrader.com, boatingbay.com, powerboatlistings.com, and their FSBO subsite, yachtworld.com, has less low end boats, also search craigslist in boat heavy markets like Tampa, Miami...

Ford Lehman 2714E Motor Mount photos

You may have done this as a part of the replacement process, but if not, you may want to separate the shaft from the trans and checm the alignment. Pretty boat, and kudos for jumping into such a repair. JohnS

    Hi!

Use the Search feature for "anchor" or "chain". There are many threads available with many and varied opinions on these questions. It is sort of a joke here that ghe anchors which are used on "other peoples" boats are too small. There is some basis to that, as many here anchor out more often...

    Sci-Fi suggestions?

I twnd to read sci-fi and fantasy as a relief from the daily onslaughts, so I tend to choose less demanding authors. When I want demanding, I read history and biography, though both Starship Troopers and Enders Game offer more than they seem to at first. Recent authors and series I have enjoyed...

No. We are still on the hard as we try to pack a 2500 ft house into a 10 x 10 long term storage unit. Packing isn't the problem, but deciding what to keep or not is. We should be on the water in Stuart Fl next month, probably there or cruising S Fla, etc, through the winter.

Agenda? From the little I have observed on the forum, I think it would be either a scheme or a plot. Reservation to be called in tomorrow, looking forward to meeting all of you, and surviving to look back upon it, as well. John Sage La Vita Dolce 45 x 15 02/20/2019 to 02/25/2019 Thanks, JohnS

    42' Bristol Trawler

From what I have read about the Bristol 42 trawler, the early hulls were all American work, but with hulls at Bristol and the house and interior done there or at several other yards. Later boats were made in eastern India, supervised by the American Bristol lead supervisors working there. The...

    42' Bristol Trawler

I may have looked at this one online, if it was a cheaper project boat in the northeast. The engines scared me off. I did find a rebuilder and parts supplier in Indianapolis, at Diesel Engines | Diesel Engines For Sale | Young and Sons Good luck with your search. John

    Virginia yacht visiting Florida

If yours is an older boat with original engines, you might look into Florida registration as an antique /classic. Our 1986 Cheoy Lee 40 cost less to register in Fla than did our dink. We are also a documented vessel. JohnS

    New here. Hello everyone.

Welcome aboard. This is a great place to learn about trawlers and cruising on them. For us, there were two areas of research we did. First was about ourselves, and how we lived, camped, and what we thought we wanted in a boat. Second was internet reseatch into possible boats, narrowing our lists...

    Unbelievable

About water heaters, if you shut off the water to the house, you should shut off both the supply to the water heater (to keep the tank full for your return) and shut off the gas or electricity, to keep the tank from boiling dry. If in winter, you may need to drain the pipes as well, and keep...

    Help me find a hull

One that might do it for you is a Thompson 51' trawler listed by a private seller on boattrader, under Thompson trawler for sale, asking $35,000, in Camden NC. Phone 920 664 5054. 1977 boat, 2x Cat 3208 na, hours unk, but seller says no oil burn, 1600 gal fuel, 400 water. 51' LOD, 53 overall...

    Help me find a hull

You might also look at some commercial fishboats. And also see if you can look at a Thompson 44 or 51 trawler. These were built on a heavily built fibreglass fish boat type of hull, and usually have fuel tankage above 500 gal. Welcome and good luck with the search.

    New folks here

Welcome to the forum. We looked at the Thompson 44 before buying our Cheoy Lee, and thought it was a very nice boat. The example we looked at needed a little too much work for its price, though. I found little in the way of factory info on that boat, as some were made hull, deck, and power at...
