    Hello everybody

Stan, you might look at vacationing in the Eastern Med, and chartering a boat with captain there. That would give you both experience with trawler type boats, for livability, and for a record of professional training, both to increase your ability and to calm down the insurers you will...

How do I research a boat?

Many details will depend on year of manufacture. Besides Google, check the search icon here for threads about them, and check the info on the boat makes page, also here at Trawler Forum. You may also find an Ocean Alexander owners website. Internet Archive may also have old makers ad pages...

    Ford Lehman 135 heat exchanger

Check zincs also T h e new hat exchangers should have new zincs in then. Calendar it to check them every couple of months, so that you get an idea of how fast they deplete, and can replace them before you lose their protection. JohnS

South Fla Bridges Closed Without Notice on 7/31/20

Here at Port Canaveral the lock and bridges were ordered closed by the Port Captain (Federal Port), whennthe port was closed ahead of the storm. We were at a marina on the seaward side of the lock and moved under the yhreat of a $6000 per day fine for remaining. The notice was first posted only...

    Ford Lehman 135 heat exchanger

The fredwarner price is a good one, but check shipping costs. They are heavy. Repace all with new. The heat exchangers cost almost as much to clean and.pressure test as to purchase, and the consequential costs of a failure of the oil or transmission coolers are so high as to make installing a...

    Just a quick introduction

Welcome aboard. There is lots of advice available here to help with the learning curves about using, cruising, repairing, and living aboard a boat. Most of it is good advice, but don't ask about anchors. :-) We hope to be in New Bern soon, on our way to the Chesapeake Bay for the rest of the summer.

Welcome aboard. Hope you heal well, and soon. I know from the Achilles tendon injury. 10 yrs ago Doc told me "there are injuries that are a quick surgery and recovery, and then there is yours." Hope to see you on the water. JohnS

Boat shopping in Florida these days?

Right sized trawler Assuming (problem one) that you are comfortable with trawler speed most of the time, look at the more traditional styled boats, and older ones - note - in good condition - in the 36 to 45 ft range. We found what you are describing in our 1986 Cheoy Lee 40 LRC, 2 cabins, 2...

    Recommendations on a crimper?

A strong second on genuinedealz.com they are a large, independent, wire and tool store in Brunswick, GA. I got some very nice made to length and ends crimped on battery cables for kess than other places wanted for the wire alone. They are about a mile north of the Brunswick Landing Marina on...

Boat shopping in Florida these days?

I don't know what you are looking for as far as price, age, and condition, but in the marina we just left, at Port Saint Lucie, there was an older 40ft Defever trawler at a fairly low price. I don't recall what, but I remember "cheap". Owner can't handle the boat anymore, and it looked clean...

    Anchor Siz/Weight

We are a little heavier, at 38,000 and 40 ft. We use an 80 lb Manson Supreme and are comfortable at anchor with it. As stated above, do start building your rode from the anchor up. Once you have ghe size and holding power of your anchor, select the size and grade of the chain, and swivel, if you...

    Introduction

Loop vs Offshore There is a lot of difference between a boat Loop- capable / comfortable and an offshore long range cruiser. If the Admiral is used to crew, and comfort, then an easily docked mid to larger boat, 40 to 50 ft cruised between marinas may be the solution. Wide side decks and...

    New member.

Visit as many boats as you can, to get an idea of what feels comfortable in a boat as a place to live for 2 or more years. Important factors for our comfort were wider side decks for docking and boat handling, 6'4" headroom, a useably large shower, a decent galley and a walk around queen bed...

    Hello!

First, use your survey to identify the make, model, and age of all of your equipment. Record this in an excel database or on paper. Add to each entry the source and item number of any needed expendables, such as filters, impellers, or fluids. Use the search function here or on ghe Grand Banks...

New Windlass needed. so many choices?

If going with a new rode, start from your anchor and spec back to the windlass. Is the anchor you have the one you want for the size of the boat and your cruising area? If so, then go to the swivel or shackle that is a strong as the holding power of the anchor, then the grade and size of the...

    Let’s talk about fenders....

In Eastern Florida and elsewhere, we have found fixed docks supported by exposed pilings, and I made a pair of 5 ft fender boards to solve the problem of fore and aft movement with wind and tide.

    Cheoy Lee trawlers

Info on Cheoy Lee 40 LRC I had asked a question of Cheoy Lee corp offices, about the apparently small size of the rudders as compared with other makes, and included with the reply from the engineering dept were the brochure and an article on a Hong Kong to Gulf of Mexico voyage. Copies...

    Heat Exchanger question

A quick look at air freight costs gave me around $ 300+ USD shipping for the 45 lbs main heat exchanger. $2200 seems high, unless that includes removal and installation. You may want to look at the condition of your hoses, and the quality and condition of your hose clamps as well. Good luck

    Heat Exchanger question

Heat exchangers 120? I guess it is the Lehman. The year / hours on the engine should guide you. Call and talk to Brian at American Diesel. He suggested that if I didn't know when the oil and trans coolers were replaced, or if it was more than five years, even with good maintenence, that these...

    Trawler Gangway

Depends on what you mean by a gangway. If this is a boarding ramp, you might find some aluminum work platforms which might serve. We bought a used set on Marinco SeaStairs from Sailorman in Ft Lauderdale because my wife injured herself getting out of a dinghy, and the stairs were easy on her...

    Heat Exchanger question

That would depend on what engine you have, who marinized it, and where in the world you are. I just replaced all of my coolers for my Ford Lehman 135s with new ones, oil and trans from American Diesel , $500+ for the four, and the main heat exchangers from a mfgr in Miami through Treasure Coast...
