    Boat yards Georgia or S.C.

Bostonwhaler16, We haven't decided exactly where we will go, but we have a couple of cruising guides, some friends near the Bay, and a couple of months to do it in. We plan to be back in Florida after Nov 1, first at Ft Pierce for a while, then points Soith and to the Bahamas. JohnS

    Boat yards Georgia or S.C.

I would avoid the Brunswick Landing boatyard at this time. The yard manager is leaving this month, there is one full time employee left, and there is a backlog of work not done. The yard repeatedly delayed starting repairs which I wanted done, until I finally did them myself with the...

    Windlass not working, help

Online, a replacement motor seems to be about 200+. We decided to replace our just-fried Pro 700 with a Maxwell 10-8, for 5/16 G4 chain and 5/8 brait. Almost 1500# line pull, and was about $1600 from wjmmarine.com. We needed to use a Starboard deck plate, bedded and bolted, for both the deck...

    New windlass for mainship 400

On a different make of boat, but I just replaced a Lewmar Pro 700 with a Maxwell 10-8. Both were for 5/16 chain, which was BBB, now G4, and 5/8 line, was 3 strand, now New England 8 brait. As the holes did not align, I made a 12 x 16" piece of 3/4" Starboard as a base plate, bedded and bolted...

    Advice on a trawler

What Ranger42c said about your personalization choices. Also, think about any limits you may have, tall, short, knees, balance, technical ability, etc. At this stage I looked mostly by search terms without boat type except power boat, length, price, and diesel fuel, to bring in as many boats as...

    Threaded Beer Cans

My bad. There used to be propane powered ones. Eliminated because of danger of explosions. DUH! We used to make tennis ball guns out of soup cans, powered by lighter fluid vapors. JohnS

    Threaded Beer Cans

Potato cannons, and more Web search for "pumpkin chunking" long range throwing of 10 lb pumpkins, some by massively oversized propane potato guns. 700+ yard range.

    Windlass and anchor recommendation

The best price I found for US made chain was at Maggi Chain in Dania Beach FL, but that was for pick up in person. I bought 5/16 G4 made by LaClede Chain in St Louis for just over $3 / ft. I bought 300 ft. Seems well made and eveny galvanized Next cheapest I found was Defender at $3.25 / ft...

    Steel Away

Thanks, Dan. I had been concerned about a Diesel Duck "just falling over", but my mental image did not include the addition of a full second story of cabin on such a boat. JohnS

TF Gathering in SE Florida 2019

We loved meeting everyone, and are looking forward to the 2020 Rendezvous. We would likely be in Florida and nearby waters November through the end of April. We are collecting door prize stuff as well. Thanks for the contribution of the 110v sump pump. We used it the next week to pump out and...

    Maxwell's HRC FF 8 - thoughts?

The 8 brait packs much tighter than the 3 strand, as it does not have the stiffness of the 3 strand, nor does it hockle when paying out. I found it much harder to splice, but doable with a good hollow fid, and working slack into the splice by flexing the standing part being spliced. My 200 ft...

    Maxwell's HRC FF 8 - thoughts?

Yes, Maxwell designates their combo windlasses RC, and like Lewmar, they seem to recommend the 8 brait line, though I think thst 3 strand would also work. I hope that the winds you describe are worst case. I would not want to be out in them. I am guessing that you would be looking at Alaska or...

    Maxwell's HRC FF 8 - thoughts?

Shop widely and wisely on internet. We just bought the one size larger 10-8 Maxwell for the same size chain and rode, 5/16 G4 and 5/8 8 brait. I found a range of prices from the 1400+ we paid to almost 2500 for the same windlass. We bought ours from Hodges Marine Electronics, at...

    New Trawler Purchase Question....

State taxes Check with a tax guy or broker in Florida about Florida sales tax. We got tagged with Florida sales tax immediately on purchasing our boat, because the 90 days to leave Florida waters without paying state tax only applies to a boat bought through a dealer or broker. Georgia does...

    Anchor Wars come to Georgia

Responding to a much earlier message, the lined-out language about live-aboards is Georgias way of removing that language from one section of their Code, which only enabled civil law enforcement, to allow it to be put into another section of law, which permits enforcement under criminal law...

    Cheoy Lee trawlers

We have a 1986 Cheoy Lee 40 LRC, La Vita Dolce. We have only been in the water with her since February, but have found her very comfortable, both in her interior spaces and headroom, as I am 6'4" and in her motion in a seaway. Built like a tank, yes, very much so. Former owner said that when he...

Our new anchor came in today.

We just bought a new chain rode, 300' of 5/16 G4 for just over 3.25 a foot. American made LaClede chain, picked up from Maggi chain in Dania Beach, Florida. Looks good, smooth and thick galvanizing. We will see how it lasts over time. What drove the decision was my finding an 80 lb Manson...

    We started today

4Yanks, boattrader.com has a "refine search" feature that allows searches by type of boat, length range, price range, and other filters. There were several DeFevers on there last night, 40 to 48 ft, and 75 to 150k. No idea of condition, which is, of course, critical. Good luck, JohnS
