Rebuilding a Hynautic helm pump pictures

Great pictures, Ron. What prompted you to rebuild the unit? And how old is your system? Mine is 40, and makes grinding noises, both upper and lower helm units. I have to flush the system, as I have discovered that the fluid is contaminated. Looks like cake yellow cake batter. I'm...

    What have you done?

For all the shoddy work the POs had done in the past, I can forgive the one that had the foresight to install an electric pump to change the oil. Lines from the bottom of each oil pan go to a pump, then to a 3' section of capped line. Get the engines to operating temps and shut down. Hook the...

    Done Deal!

Congrats on the new addition! Hope you post pictures of you transit to Florida. With our boat on the hard, we have to live vicariously through others in milder climes!

PVC or ABS-PVC for long head line runs

I ran sch 40 pvc from my new holding tank to just below the deck pump out fitting. About 7 foot run or so. Final 18 inches is hose. Made sure the run was on a slant all the way, with 45 degree fittings. Also put in a coupling near the tank to allow removal, etc. Reinforced the run were ever...

    Cruising with guns

A marina friend of ours has elected not to cruise with weapons. But he does have several cans of that wasp and bee killer that can reach out 20 feet or more. A shot to an intruder's face should prevent any further mischief. I'm thinking of following his example to avoid the hassle.

    Early October cruise

LaBomba - We've been to Put In Bay several times this year. We prefer to hitch to a mooring ball rather than tie up at a dock. More relaxing and quiet than at a pier. Gettin' too old for that all night party stuff.

    Early October cruise

Toledo Light. Western Lake Erie is very shallow. The channel to the Maumee River goes well out into the lake for the freighter traffic. The light is half way out in the channel, 9 miles from Toledo. Toledo Yacht Club. 1906 building being lovingly restored to its "Great Gatsby" splendor. Jana...

    Early October cruise

With the weather getting questionable again, we started back home. With our ground speed of 9 to 10 knots, we took the main shipping channels all the way through Detroit, and went on to the Monroe Boat Club, 47 miles and 6.25 hours away. First Mate Jana standing by as we negotiate the narrow...

    Early October cruise

Approaching the Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Downtown Detroit. MacArthur bridge going to Belle Isle on the West channel of the Detroit River. The chart listed a clearance of 32 feet. We have a vertical clearance of 22 with the mast up. We passed under with room...

    Early October cruise

We want to share some pics of our cruise from Western Lake Erie to Detroit earlier this month. We tried to go a few weeks before, but the weather wouldn 't cooperate. Glad we waited, it was a wonderful week. First night at Middle Bass Island State Park, 3 hours West from Sandusky. Next morning...

What's the deal with all that wood in the cabins

I'm thinking the manufacturers want to add warmth and character to the interior. My 73 Gulfstar has teak faced plywood in the main salon and stateroom, and wood grain Formica everywhere else. At least they left out the bead curtains and lava lamp. Cheap and simple, I guess. We...

    Hello

Welcome aboard ! I'll pass on the best advice I ever received when boat shopping: Don't buy the biggest boat you can afford, buy the smallest boat you can live on. Make a "Wants/Needs" list for the boat. Then take a brutal look at each item to decide if you really need it or is it a nice...

First Question from the New Guy (long)

Best advice I ever got was like what Irdiverdan posted: Don't buy the biggest boat you can afford, buy the smallest you can live on. We did that and ended up with our 36' Gulfstar. Are things cozy? Yup. Have we adapted? Yup. Do we enjoy being on the boat? Most definitely!!!! Make your...

No doubt there are sufficient "properly fitted" PFDs for all personnel aboard. Most likely in the locker next to the one holding all the fishing poles. :whistling:

    How To Prevent Chafing?

When I wanted chafe protection for my lines, the First Mate and I made a trip to Goodwill. With her direction, I bought a black leather purse for only a few dollars. Took it back to the boat and carefully cut the stitching to give me some nice sized pieces to use on the dock lines. Sewed it...

    A boat or a vessel

I was always told a boat can be lifted out of the water (ships in heavy salvage pontoon docks excluded). The exception being submarines, which historically are called boats. My .02.

    Raw water impeller question

I put the SpeedSeal kits on both of my engines this Spring. Last week had no flow from the port engine. Changing the impeller took all of 10 minutes or so. Used the grease that came with the impeller, and lubed the O ring as well. I recommend it highly for ease of use. They also have the...

    Sail Bote vs BIG SHIP
