    Perkins 4-236 died - Pump?

The PO of my boat installed an electric pump between the engines to change the oil. Hoses from each sump connect to the pump, and then the pump hose goes into a bucket, or what ever. I pieced together some fittings that allow me to use that pump in line with the fuel tank supply to bleed the...

    36 owners wishing they bought a 42?

No, we do not want a 42 foot boat. Our 36 fits our needs very nicely. And we can afford to operate her. We think she's the perfect boat because she will Drink 6, Dine 4, Sleep 2.

Avoiding a peril of GPS plotters

I'm really uncomfortable with the way some operators blindly let their electronics do everything for them. My boat came with an 11 year old Garmin GPSMap 182c. Cost $1500 new. I plot a course on my chart, create way points, and load their lat/long into the GPS. That gives me an arrow on the...

    Potential great loopers!

Steph - Best of luck to you on your search for a vessel. As soon as we finish our injector pump repairs in Sandusky, Ohio, we're off for the Erie canal. According to Skipper Bob's cruising guide for the canal, the height limitations are: 21' - Troy N.Y.east to Oswego canal 17' -...

    Perkins 4-236 died - Pump?

bayview - Yup, certain. The manual shows nothing relating to another filter in the pump. My diesel specialist also confirmed this. His shop was looking for a rebuilt unit someone had on the shelf. Found one. In England. They are taking my pump to a local shop they use for overhauls...

    Perkins 4-236 died - Pump?

Don't know any details yet. Still waiting to hear back about an exchange.

    Perkins 4-236 died - Pump?

Many thanks for the suggestions. A diesel mechanic came by and confirmed my thoughts that the injector pump itself is shot. (The pump's dead,Jim) (But Bones, there must be something you can do!) (The pump's dead, Jim) Waiting now to find out about availability of overhauled units verses...

Looking to buy a GS 43 MK II

Yes, it is over part of the fuel tank, but I don't see that as an issue. There is an air gap between the deck and the top of the tank.

Looking to buy a GS 43 MK II

Kent - We like the 43 and 44 Gulfstars very much. Unfortunately, they were out of our price range. A little extra room in all the right places!

    Perkins 4-236 died - Pump?

While underway to Cleveland, the starboard engine quit. We were in 3 - 5 seas, (thanks, weather service) so I suspected a fuel problem as in a clogged filter. Limped into Lorain and spent three hours trying to get the engine started again. Went through the bleeding process repeatedly...

    Holding tank location

Billl - I had to cut an extra access hole under the berth, as well as cut out the bulkhead that the lower drawer sat on. Careful measurement in the head allowed a snug fit for the tank. I had to have a short tank to allow the toilet to be mounted on top of it. It works very well for us.

Looking to buy a GS 43 MK II

Bill - The battery bank is directly below the lower helm, forward of the starboard engine. There is 2.5' x 2.5' hatch in the floor that allows access for inspections and servicing. My battery charger and combiner are mounted on the bulkheads near there as well.

    Holding tank location

I put a 30 gallon holding tank under the port bunk. It extends into the head where the RV style gravity toilet attaches. Uses about a pint of fresh water to flush. PVC pipe on an incline all the way to 8" below the pump out. Flexible hose finishes the connection. I've added additional...

    Conalls boat

Fine work, Conall! I'm a little confused about your steering. Does it only work when the engine is running? If it does, I can't determine if that is a bad thing or not.

Bad way to start summer cruise

RTF - Yeah, I'm slackin' with the followup. If time wasn't an issue, I would have painted the inside with RustOleum Zinc Cold Galvanizing spray, like I did on my props. Then painted the rest RustOleum blue. Maybe in the fall.:whistling: Capthead - Funny, I have Lock Tite in my toolbox, but...

Bad way to start summer cruise

The elbow cam in at noon today. $195 for the welded exhaust flange. $195 for the cast elbow. $20 to ship. $410 total, and received 48 hours after ordering. Well done, Trans Atlantic Diesel! After hunting up a wrench large enough to put it together, it went on like a glove! The aluminum...

Bad way to start summer cruise

As to the compatibility issue, my zincs are in good shape. The elbow is bolted to the cast iron exhaust manifold with a gasket between. The original gasket was a fabric (asbestos?) sandwiched between two thin sheets of stainless. I don't know what the new one will look like. Might just be a...

Bad way to start summer cruise

I did consider the material compatibility issue. We are in the Great Lakes. We plan to do the loop next year, and continue for as long as it is fun to do so. I figure we'd be in salt water about half the year. I think the aluminum elbow will fail earlier than the stainless one, but it will...

    Travel lift or Hydraulic trailer?

Watched our guys move a boat today. Their trailer has a couple of straps that support the keel, with the pads used to stabilize the boat. Sweet.

Bad way to start summer cruise

Doing last minute checks and inspections prior to our cruise to the Erie Canal. Run and leak check of engines produced a show stopper in the form of a rotted out exhaust elbow on the starboard engine, leaking water everywhere. :banghead: A quick review of the archives didn't give me much hope...

    Travel lift or Hydraulic trailer?

Our marina uses a trailer to transport the boat to the well, where the travel lift picks it up and launches it. Our guys are real pros, and never ding a boat.
