Why did you buy your boat?

purpose-built delivery boat After retiring to Guam I thought I would spend a lot of time under the mango tree, but it is not working out that way. The people of the Western Pacific and the Philippines are spread over hundreds of small islands. Only a few are serviced by regular freight...

    Another Failed Float Switch!

I have used gems switches for many years they seem to outlast the systems they control. Years ago I was in a yard that was refitting a high-end motor yacht. They were selling lots of scrap gear. I ended up with a few boxes of reed switches. They all worked after 20 years of duty and I expect...

    Homebuilt

In the displacement world I don’t think there is a best design. Some of the multihulls can push the hull speed number a bit over 1.34 but most of the gain comes in the fact that the displacements are low and the waterline lengths are long. The hp/ton number at a given hull speed is...

all charts have to be updated even the echarts. Updating charts was an honorable task for Plebes. I took a fewAdmiralty Charts in for update and found a few were still updated by hand but they also had a printer that printed the updates on a sticky-back type paper. These small overlays...

    Bus adaptable Air Conditioning

On my current boat I have an auto system. The air handler is the type used in the back of vans. I built a heat exchanger and plumbed it into the main engine’s seawater inlet. The extra heat did not affect the engine water temp or exhaust gas temp but its a small system.

    Diesel Dinghy?

I had a 7kw diesel outboards on my tri, it was the get home. It worked well but was just too heavy for me to handle by myself in a seaway and I didn’t want it on the stern all the time. I replaced it with a 9 hp 4 cycle gas outboards. My next boat, which is in the yard, had a 40 hp yanmar...
