Whale Grey IC experiences and advice

I replaced my old shower sump with the Whale tank and Gulper pump system. https://www.whalepumps.com/marine/product.aspx?Category_ID=10023&Product_ID=10527&FriendlyID=Shower-and-Sink-Waste-System I run two shower drains and two AC condensate drains to it. It works great!

Compact rocking chair for boat use?

While cruising this past winter we met some friends that had rockers. They had foam pipe insulation tubes wrapped around the rockers to protect the teak deck. Seemed to work pretty good.

    Wireless radar

I've been using the Raymarine Quantum doppler radar for the past 18 months. When I did the install I had first planned to run the cable but decided to try the wireless connection before going to that trouble. At first I had a couple of connection glitches on power-up but not for the past year...

    Replies Regarding These Shaft Cutters

I (a diver) put them on our 2" shafts about 18 months ago and as far as I know, they work well. Never had anything wrapped in our props since then. Solid and simple.

    Onboard Ovens

We have a Sharp R-820 convection microwave on our boat that's about 12 years old. It's small at only .9 CuFt but it does a remarkably good job at baking and microwaving. Never had a combo unit like this before but we are very impressed with what this thing can do.

    Finally Heading South

Joseph's is at my home marina, South Harbor Village. One of our favorites for dinner and Rusty Hooks is also excellent. Our dock was wiped out along with the transient dock by Isaias in early August so we've moved down to Myrtle Beach until repairs are completed.

    First Trawler Rental

We rented the Salty Peanut for several days a couple of years ago and had a great time. We ended up buying a Navigator and are loving it.

    Air Cond Barnacles

We put the Clearline system in our boat last spring and it works well. It does what it claims to do by chlorinating seawater to keep the system clean (doesn't work in fresh water). The Clearline unit is just after our pump and includes a return line that goes back to the input line prior to the...

    Simrad, RayMarine or Garmin

Did a complete refit a year ago on our new-to-us Navigator. At first I was leaning towards Garmin but the boat did have some functioning Raymarine electronics that were about 12 years old that I thought we could keep. The plan was to integrate the old Raymarine C90W units with the newest Axiom...

    Frying pan shoals cut/slough

There are some big rollers offshore right now due to Epsilon but that's supposed to subside somewhat over the next few days. With your draft and those swells, I wouldn't recommend the 4 mile crossing near low tide but the marked crossing at Frying Pan Slough will be fine. Be aware that the ICW...

Boat Name - Reason for yours

Ours is "Pawseidon" for a couple of reasons. We cruise with our two pups and one of us is Greek!

    Frying pan shoals cut/slough

The marked crossing at Frying Pan Slough is about 15 miles offshore. The tip of the shoals (tower) is about 35 miles offshore so that is a significant shortcut. There is plenty of water there for crossing. There is another crossing point that we often use that is even closer in. On many charts...

    2020 Bottom Job prices

The yard I'm on is currently charging $65 per ft for bottom prep/paint + haul out. Running gear coating is additional.

Dock Space Prior to Boat Purchase....

When we started looking for a cruising boat (45-50') in 2018, I checked long term slip availability at our local marinas and quickly found that there was none and we would likely have to wait for years for one to open up. As luck would have it, a couple months later, a rare 50' privately owned...

    Hurricane Isaias, Southport marina damage

Many of the yards in our area around Southport have hurricane haul-out programs. However, most haul out programs don't become active unless the storm is predicted to be hurricane strength. So, in this case lots of boats didn't get pulled because Isaias was tropical storm level and not showing...

    Very dirty shore electric cables

I use one of these and heavy duty degreaser to clean mine. Takes a little time but it works for me. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IC892JC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Hurricane Isaias, Southport marina damage

That's not mud. It's thick mats of marsh grass that came from the marsh on the other side of the ICW during the storm.

    Hurricane Isaias, Southport marina damage

I was on it yesterday for a while. Damage does not look to be real serious but will need to repair some gelcoat. All of those pictures are "after". The first two were South Harbor Village marina. The third was Southport marina. The docks at South Harbor are not supposed to be curved. Look close...

    Hurricane Isaias, Southport marina damage

The third picture posted by the OP is actually from South Harbor Village marina about a mile west of Southport Marina. South Harbor is my home marina and our boat is part of this mess. Transient dock pilings snapped off at the height of the surge & winds. Then that dock took out part of C dock...

Shopping for a new dinghy and outboard. What would you get?

I recently purchased a 9.5 AB rated for 15hp. I went with an electric start, 15hp Tohatsu that checked all the boxes. It's the same size & weight as the 9.9 and was less expensive than all the alternative 15 hp makes. FYI, today's Mercury 9.9 & 15 (and others) are made by Tohatsu. The Suzuki was...

What Age Do You Think You Will Hang It Up?

We rented the Salty Peanut Mainship 400 for a week through SWF Yachts two years ago. It was VERY helpful for helping us learn what we did and didn't like/need as we were just beginning our search for a looper/cruising boat. Well worth it!

    Using Your AP on Routes

We've not yet used our AP in auto route mode, just use it for maintaining a heading. But the statement above brings up a question. During a trip last month we were southbound on the ICW for several days so we were going against the flow of most of the traffic still migrating north. We...

    ElectroSea ClearLine system???

The system does what it claims to do! I've inspected my AC strainer every few weeks since installing. Strainer screen has always been clean aside from an occasional piece of grass or a small shell. Normally, at this time of year, I would have to clean the strainer every 4 or 5 days to keep the...
