Grand Banks 36 Prop Shaft Packing Gland

https://oya.com/maintenance-reduction/shafting-issues/ The above link will take you to article with drawing of the GB stuffing box...it has a water cooling hose that provides cooling water flow to the packing...essentially the cooling flow is to cool the stuffing box metal housing.

What Age Do You Think You Will Hang It Up?

The "right time" to start or finish is different for everyone. You should never have a hobby you cannot afford. Financial situations can change, so be flexible. You should never have a hobby that does not give you great pleasure. So if it's not fun..stop. Every person has different attention...

Grand Banks 36 Prop Shaft Packing Gland

Traditional packing gland procedure calls for no leak when stationary..1 or 2 drops per minute and a temp of about 30 degrees F above outside water temp when rotating. Since the GB has the extra coolant flow from exhaust cooling water, I assume that the GB gland can be a little tighter with no...

    Money upon closing

BandB's comment is pretty much right on. An accepted offer is really an option. Once conditions change, it is a whole new deal. I have done purchases with Brokers and without. Brokers tend to increase the chance of the deal getting done and they generally do really earn their fee, however...

Norfolk north through the Chesapeake Bay -- what not to miss?

I would go up the James River..lots to see, especially if the weather outside of Hamton is too rough. Smooth water from Hampton north of York River will give you better memories. Weather week of 7/13 shows wind from SE. BTW--O C Diver is excellent resource regarding the Chesapeake. He just came...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

No, the Grand Banks 36 does not have a door opening in the gunwale. The railing does have an opening, but the gunwale is 10 inches above the deck for the entire perimeter. Most fixed docks are high enough that this is not a problem. The swim platform comes with a ladder so that is not a...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

My wife and I have no problem with a 17" step, so the little step on the dock will only be used for children and very elderly. Having the step at the rub rail was what I felt comfortable with stepping over the gunwale. That first step off was the most intimidating. My concern with two steps was...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

I cut the sides from 11.5 in x 23 in pieces. The step is 15 in wide, and 9 in deep. I made a pattern by cutting a piece of cardboard with scissors, using duct tape for adjusting small size and shape. The "channel" of the hook section is 2 3/4 in to fit/slide over rail. The "notch" below the...

How often do you need your lower helm?

I like the lower helm. You are closer to the center of rotation/roll, making the ride more comfortable. Running over a big wake when on the flybridge worries me..the movement is quite violent...feel like I should wear a seat belt up there! And, as I get older, climbing/descending steps gets more...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

Here is the step painted. Amazing controversy about paint, varnish, coatings for wood. Since I used pine, and not teak, I researched what paint worked best for Adirondack chairs which are often made from pine.. Seems like several people claimed lacquer worked best as supposedly resins bond with...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

I just made this one..pic is before painting. Used 3/4" select pine at Home Depot..12 feet of 1x12. Pine is not particularly strong, but it is easy to work with. Had to reinforce for strength. Oriented wood grain for load. Calculations rate it at 400 pound capacity. A bit of custom fitting...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

Nice...did you thru bolt the cleats thru the gunwale or just screw them in? Where did the metal hook/strip come from?

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

There is a wide variance in the strength of "plastic steps". I weigh 220# and the one in the picture, rated for 300# does not flex at all. Weight is carried by four rubber tipped reinforced feet..not by the plastic. It is as stable or more so than the Taylor marine steps. With the flexible mat...

17 in high two step stool works pretty well, but still a pretty large "gulf" to step over.

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

https://www.trawlerforum.com/forums/s32/need-advice-boarding-ladder-10513.html Link above is to the thread showing a concept. This is very similar to what I was thinking about except those little attachments at the top. I thought about going over the gunwale and making the step a bit deeper...

    Grand Banks Boarding Step

When first encountering the new to me Grand Banks 36, when attempting to board my wife looked a bit like a bull looking at a new gate. She managed to board but stated she could not get off without assistance. Not just the 24" drop having to step over the 9" gunwale, but also the distance out...

    Weather "Window" Advice Needed/Wanted

Here is a short youtube of the three day trip that was the subject of this thread. First Day (Norfolk to Deltaville) Forecast 2-3 foot waves from SE--15 mph winds, gusting to 20 from the East. Actual was different---more calm at first, then crossing York River outlet, tide changed and waves...

    Damp Rid Dessicant

Anyone familiar with the desicant dehumidifiers like this one. They work over a wider temp range than compressor types. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B8SCPZ4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_NkiZEbY0JVWAK

    Weather "Window" Advice Needed/Wanted

This thread is not intended to open the can of worms regarding controversy about running at RPM below WOT or max load. That said, I am very skeptical of any so called "guru" who claims you have to reach max governed RPM to reach max engine life. There is a lot of scientific literature on this...

    Damp Rid Dessicant

    Weather "Window" Advice Needed/Wanted

I would use Dustin Daniels again under same conditions...unfamiliar boat and waters. Very skilled, conscientious, and personable. Exceeded my expectations. What would have been a stressful single handed trip was quite pleasant and I learned alot. Accelerated my learning curve for the boat...

    Weather "Window" Advice Needed/Wanted

Great idea..thanks. Very impressed with such good fuel economy. Some of the time was running slow in the ICW and approaches, but probably running close to 2 gallons per hour at cruise speed. I need to check accuracy of tachs, but we were running between 1700-1900 rpm and hitting speeds on GPS...
