    Water Injection

There is merit, but probably not an aftermarket add on Water injection has been used since before WWII in high performance gasoline engines. My Father was a Plane Captain Mechanic and many military planes used water injection to achieve higher HP. It has also been studied for use in diesel...

    Restore Rubrail

Today sanded/polished sections of the rub rail and it is definitely bronze. Somebody painted/coated the bronze with a brass colored material. So I will polish and then decide to clear coat it or let it turn natural...at least it will be one color.

    Restore Rubrail

The clear coating hypothesis may explain the situation. Don't think anyone would make stanchions out of brass and rub rail and stanchions look same, so I will try polishing a section...

    Restore Rubrail

It is not green like my bronze seacock. It is dark brown where it is not shiny. If it was all uniform I would be fine with that.. It is the splotches section that are shiny brass combined with dull brown on the rest that makes it look neglected.

    Restore Rubrail

My GB36 has a metal band on the rub rail..about 1" wide. It is thick metal and seems to have been plated with shiny metal, like polished brass. The "polished" part is mostly now a dull dark brown. Looks like it one time matched the finish on the stanchions that are still quite shiny. How do I...

Advise buying in 1983 grand Banks 42 classic

Buying a used boat always involves risk AND opportunity. Neither buyer or seller ever know the "true" value with certainty. Issues as serious as engines that do not run increase uncertainty astronomically. Whoever buys this boat will most certainly need the spirit of a gambler. If you are a...

Teak decking on front cabin roof.

I think Sika recommends 290 for the seams beacause it is more UV resistant than 291. In the US, 290 comes in a sausage, not a tube. Comes in a tube in Europe. Have no idea why. TDS SIS 440 claims to be highly resistant to UV. So 291 to glue down, then SIS 440 for the seams does seem to be the...

Teak decking on front cabin roof.

Thanks..I am reading all the Sikaflex literature and TeakDecking.com site. Seems that screws are used for planks with full depth seams that need to be bent, but really not needed if board is flat and straight..especially with new polyurethane products. Teak attached to curved or bowed surface or...

Teak decking on front cabin roof.

I am considering that removal renovation mod, but hesitating as I find the "original" features of the GB36 to be attractive. And I see benefits in maintaining it in Bristol.Original condition. My sailboat had non skid fiberglass and was nowhere near as attractive as teak is. I also find the teak...

Teak decking on front cabin roof.

Still wondering about thickness of fiberglass and plywood core in this extension. There are advantages of using a few screws if properly installed. After all, all the other teak is screwed down.

Teak decking on front cabin roof.

You sure had me wondering for a few minutes! Lol That teak is on a v berth cabin roof extension. The ceiling is directly below the teak on top of the extension. The v berth ceiling extends well past (24") the hatch. I understand that many recommend just using the caulk to glue the teak. For...

Teak decking on front cabin roof.

My 1984 GB36 has teak decking on the small front cabin roof...probably meant for seating. It is not flat, it is bowed higher in middle. The front trim teak board came loose on the ends...I figured the screws pulled out, but after removing the plugs, the hole was 3/8 in. thru the whole...

Advise buying in 1983 grand Banks 42 classic

I sure agree on that, but I bought my boat from a serious seller with the boat at a very large and reputable broker and it was not ready to run when I viewed it--even though I made an appointment well in advance and drove more than 200 miles to see it. In my case, the problem related to COVID 19...

Biggest risks with old boats with teak decks is probably the engines and the decking. As mentioned, teak decks with loose or missing caulking are sure signs of water intrusion. The hull is solid fiberglass--the decks below the teak are fiberglass with a core--usually plywood or foam. If the core...

Advise buying in 1983 grand Banks 42 classic

I recently purchased a Grand Banks 36 Classic. With almost all brokers, your offer to buy will be contingent on a "satisfactory" marine condition and value survey as well as a sea trial. Buying insurance without a current condition survey is possible but very difficult--so consider a survey as...

Grand Banks 36 Prop Shaft Packing Gland

Just finished running and measured 80 F water, and packing gland housing 110-115 F after running at 1800 rpm for 30 minutes..no drips running or stationary..I think it is good.

    Insurance

I think many insurance providers look at liability only policy as not having enough revenue and market size to justify the risk. Several companies I checked would not offer liability only. Assessing risk of fire or sinking on an old boat can be difficult, so the usual tool is the survey...

Grand Banks 36 Prop Shaft Packing Gland

Hard to tell for sure what packing material in my stuffing box, as previous owner tells me that it is more than 10 years old. I think Duramax is the only material that could last that long. Most likley my problem with a leak stemmed from a repair facility replacing rhe rear motor...
