    Transiting BVI

Question for anyone experienced cruising in and out of the BVIs. A boat I assist with will be cruising the Virgin Islands next month. We will first be in the BVIs, then transit for a few days to USVIs and then back to BVIs for the balance of the month. Question, is there a simple way to get...

    Steel hull repair

Alternative? I am by no means a naval or structural engineer but would find one to lend an opinion of a fiberglass and epoxy skin over the existing steel hull. Thoughts anyone?

Check out “un-screwups” Very effective removing screws and the smallest might work for nails. Also look for a nail puller.

Looking at a 1972 65 foot wooden Romsdahl

As a life long wooden boat owner who has done the majority of maintenance and repair for over thirty years taking care of a Cheoy Lee sailboat I offer the following. It all depends. Quality of design, construction materials and methods along with maintenance will all determine the current and...

    Looking for help

Suggestion As a wooden boat owner for 35+ years I share these suggestions. Apply a wax to fill the plank seams prior to bottom paint. You can use a product called Slik Seam or the wax donuts used in sealing a toilet drain. This will reduce the amount of water passing through the seams before...

How far offshore New Jersey to avoid crab/lobster traps?

Capt reply I have traversed these waters many times over several years. I have not encountered any pot buoys beyond 1 nm of the NJ Atlantic coastline. The Delaware and Chesapeake Bay are another story. Come November they will be few and far between but worth a sharp lookout.

What to do with outdated Flares?

One way to ‘Dispose of’ outdated glares is to have someone organize a training session on use of visual signals. The local CG Aux might be a good source. My club near Annapolis does this every other year after getting a USCG permit which also prompts a Notice to Mariners and comms with other...

favorite top 10 harbor towns fun to visit

Please excuse me if my post might be a high-jacking of this thread but I hope it is not. I am an experienced cruising and racing sailor on the Atlantic Coast with virtually no experience in the PNW looking for some local knowledge and suggestions. I will be chartering out of Ship Harbor in...

    REALLY Frustrating Brightwork Issue

Looks to me like moisture in the wood caused coating to fail or failed finish allowed moisture in. Which came first? Chicken/egg. Remedy is the same either way. Remove failed finish, thorough clean and dry wood then apply coating as you did before.

    My dad's drafting tools

I’m not sure how to private message you but if by chance the tools are still available I would be more than happy to be the next caretaker of these instruments. I reach a STEM class in navigation and these would be a great teaching tool. Additionally, I have museum connections which when the...

    Radio On While At Anchor?

On for Safety Personally, I leave VHF on whenever I am aboard for reasons of safety and community as described by others. When I'm hoping for some peace and quiet I turn the squelch all (or nearly) all the way up which tends to filter out most of the unwanted chatter. USCG and nearby...

A first day of fall question for you...

Replace I’m a lighting guy by profession so take this with a grain of salt. Replace all with led to enjoy a consistent look of the fixture,;color, intensity, shape, etc. Given the intermittent use, cost of led lamps and despite the 90% energy savings you will never in our lifetimes get a...

    Tipping a delivery Captain

Two cents from a delivery capt. From the perspective of a delivery captain. Tips are never expected but always appreciated. More general perspective. If the service met expectations then little to no tip is warranted. If the service exceeded expectations then yes a ‘thank you very much” is...

    Recommendation for Replacement Electric Oven-Stove

An experience to share which required minimal carpentry and electrical work. I replaced a 120VAC stove/oven with an induction cooktop and "toaster oven" about two years ago to the admiral's total satisfaction. The 120VAC cooktop was a drop in unit manufactured by "True Induction" which did...

Moving boat from Stuart to Jacksonville

My suggestion would be to make the trip non-stop on the outside during good weather. Far fewer hazards (both health and navigation) much more relaxing, etc. Consider a third crew member to facilitate reasonable watch schedule. It will take fewer days. This presumed adequate range of fuel...

    Redoing teak,epoxy, urethane, paint?

Decide then follow firecyions Any coating on wood is intended to protect the wood from degradation due to moisture and UV. Exterior teak can handle both but you must accept grey wood and occasional cleaning. Any good finish properly applied can protect from moisture. Paint, stain. Epoxy...
