Victoria, BC to the Sea of Cortez

Are you at the MBYC? If so, they have a Friday happy hour that has a sunset view off the upper deck that is amazing. Great people, too. I'll throw a shameless plug in for a cafe opened by some old friends called "The House of Juju." Priced about MB standard, the food is pretty good. It's up...

    Bought our first trawler

It just keeps going... I was in the store picking up the new anchor I ordered (a Rocna, heh) and the cashier asked what it was for. I told him we just bought a trawler, and he commented that he was in the market himself and thought he had found a good one, a C&L 37 down in Oxnard. He was...

    Bought our first trawler

As an unexpected bonus, I just got a call from the engine surveyor. As part of the survey, he will come back to the boat after I take posession and spend an hour going over the survey, explain his recommended fixes and how to do them (and offer quotes on those I'm not comfortable doing), show...

    Bought our first trawler

Right in one... The genset is really a Farymann single cylinder with an alternator belted on. There is a separate transmission that drives a sprocket. The PO replaced the old chain with a titanium one with a quicklink. It's not normally connected. The engine surveyor told me to make sure I...

    Bought our first trawler

The Europa style fits. My wife liked the single level cockpit/salon layout of a sportfisher, I like the TT style, so it was a great compromise. Coming from a sailing background, this one handles like a really wide sailboat. It even has a monster keel down the centerline to make me feel at...

    Bought our first trawler

I just experienced that feeling in the pit of the stomach that accompanies signing a check of unusual size. We should close on Friday. The survey went well, the mechanical survey went very well, and here we are... first time big powerboat owners. She's a 1979 37' (docs say 36') C&L "Sea...

Victoria, BC to the Sea of Cortez

If you find one for $160K grab it. We looked at a GB42 in a 50' slip in Marina 1 and the guy wanted $250K for the slip. And he'll get it. There's a guy dangling a 40' upwind who doesn't really need to sell and wants $150K for it. The last 40' sold last week for $112K, and it was considered a...

    3RD failed survey this year

I hear you. I drove five hours through LA and San Diego traffic to view a sailboat that the broker assured me was "immaculate" and "turn key" only to have her hand me estimates from two different yards in Ensenada to recondition or replace the mast. In the parking lot, before I even walked...

    C & L Boatworks?? marine??

Just did a survey on a C&L 37' trawler. Bottom had more blisters, and much larger, than I was expecting. Good news is that there's a bunch of roving in the layup, not just mass chopper gun mat. I'll have more info when the deal is finalized.

    Okay, single or twin??

Was that IG with the big Volvos for sale in Anacortes? We looked at one up there this summer with giant turbo Volvos that was an estate sale. It was super clean and well priced, and engines aside was probably the best boat we looked at from Vancouver to San Francisco. I just can't remember...

Going to look at 2 boats. . .how do you figure what a fair offer is?

I got some very good advice when I was looking for our last sailboat. The question was "Are you looking for a deal, or a boat? Those are two very different things." First time around I was looking for a deal. Found one too. Second time around I was looking for a boat. Same for this third...

    Feeling good

Well, just like with our last sailboat, the right boat has found us. Our offer has been accepted, and now the joy of actually trying to buy it. It's a boat I have often looked at and said, "I wish that one would be for sale," and suddenly it was. At a reasonable, fair price. It's an older...

    Generator as "Get Home" power

20 miles is the battery range of the Catalina 30 at 4kn. More if you go even slower. That's battery only. If you size the generator or genset properly, range is limited only by fuel. The idea is to run the "get home" from the generator. I wouldn't bother with a large battery bank for that...

    Generator as "Get Home" power

I believe James over at Electroprop has something. I'm not sure if it's necessarily badged as a "get home" because most of the larger-than-launch sized electric boats are all sailboats. It's much easier to stomach a 20 mile range under power when you have sails. Check out his site.

    Generator as "Get Home" power

You can. We converted our original sailboat to purely electric power (ok, serial hybrid with a Honda 2000 that we've never needed) and the duty cycle on the motor is rated for full throttle 24/7/365. We just put in offer on a trawler that has a farymann "genset" with a chain sprocket to the...

    He says inflateable PFDs suck

I singlehand our 40' sailboat regularly. I always wear a harness/ inflatable unit anytime I'm outside the cockpit, and sometimes in the cockpit when the weather gets up. I carry a whistle, mirror, and a PLB in the pockets. More for the harness than the PFD. I've got a series of jack lines...

Made an Offer, Need Suggestions for Ventura area Surveyor

We were/are in the same boat. Made an offer, missed it by a day or so. Then during the first buyer's survey/sea trial, a turbo blew, and there were other mechanical issues. That saved us several hundred bucks... And potentially thousands...

Made an Offer, Need Suggestions for Ventura area Surveyor

Used Mike Pyzell from up in SB. We'll use him again for our next boat.

    Hello from southern California

Yes, we're over in MW Phase 2 by the visitor's center. Thanks for the info. I do love the NT32 but it's a bit out of our price range and doesn't have the second cabin for the kid. Beautiful boats, though. There's a flybridge version for sale in SB for $220k. Right in front of Brophie's...

    Hello from southern California

Yeah, it was a 32. We saw one on a trailer when we were headed down from Vancouver Island this summer. When I say "totally trailerable", I don't mean by me. I'm referring to the fact that it can travel via roadway without attention from a sawz-all, and without completely emptying the wallet...

    Hello from southern California

Thanks for the advice. We've considered the trailer idea, even looked at a Nordic 32 that was totally trailerable. The problem is us, in that we are upgrading (sideways-grading?) from a 40 foot sailboat and we just aren't willing to take the size hit. I'm not sure why I thought it would be...

    Toilet paper

Guilty as charged. Although we use gallon Ziplocs, and everyone gets their own. You haven't lived until you've rooted around the can to find the bag with your name on it. Or squeezed the air (and other yummy smells) out so it'll fit back in. The guy with the Pine Sol is right on, although...

    Hello from southern California

Thanks, that's a nice boat. I probably should mention that in order to keep my sailboat for a while I have to radically lower my budget. I've got to keep it below $75k, and $60k or less would be better. As we say at work, "I'm unicorn hunting..." The idea above about chartering in the PNW is...

    Hello from southern California

We've been doing a little looking and a lot of discussing. If nothing else, this has been the communication exercise of all time... We've had a lot of fun big plans, but what we mostly do together is trips out to the Channel Islands. It's very important to my wife to make a weekend trip a...

Documentation Dysfunction – Serious Issue for Buyers and Sellers

I've had my own horror story with the NVDC. I tried to make a change to my documentation midyear, and faxed them all the paperwork last February. Last August, while we were out at the islands (way out of cell range) I got a nasty voicemail from the NVDC telling me that my application was...
