Life's Uncertain Drink the Wine Now

Drink the wine now? Just had a bottle of '88 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo last night -- one of the best wines I have ever tasted. But I paid cash for it when it was released in 1990! dvd

    Sliding Door Latch/Lock

Anyone know of a source for a locking latch to be used on an exterior sliding cabin door? I need to replace the lock on my 1987 Newburyport (Hershine) 37. * Thanks, dvd

    AuraGen cruise generator

I realize it runs off the main engine, but my turbo Perkins has more than enough power to keep me going at hull speed. Seems to me, if I were starting from scratch, or had to replace an existing genny, I'd much rather have this little thing hanging off the front of my engine than having to add...

Hmmm. An 8.5 kW generator that is 12X6 inches and weighs 52 lbs. This sounds pretty good -- is there something I'm missing here? dvd

    Change Generator Location?

That is a cooling fan, however, the enclosure hasn't been in place for years because it is so difficult to access the forward side. On board, there is no doubt when the generator is running. If I leave it in place, I may make a simpler enclosure and work at attenuating the sound a bit.

    Change Generator Location?

The generator is as far to port as it can go, and even where it is, it blocks access to the waterline seacock for the pump-out (currently closed and zip-tied, but still can't get to it). If I were to cut an access into the bulkhead, it would be fairly large (20 X 14 inches or so) and covered...

    Change Generator Location?

Took possession of my Newburyport (Hershine) 37 this week and spent several days doing the new boat things (major cleaning, taking off all of the POs junk, putting on my junk, crawling around the ER, inspecting every locker, port & hatch, etc.) including hiring the mechanic who has worked on the...

    Raw Water Pump Impeller

I'm getting ready to bring my new-to-me boat down from Rhode Island to Philly so am starting to collect the spare parts I want to carry with me. Besides a good stock of spare fuel filters for the primary Racors and some for the secondary filter, I want to have a spare impeller for the raw water...

    Mattress

If you have an Ikea nearby, take a look at their "memory foam" selection of mattresses. They have different densities so you might find one that works for you. Adequate quality to last a while, but inexpensive enough to customize the shape with an electric knife.

    NOT a trawler?

That's the Canal du Midi. Where you might notice the difference is in the local wine* * BTW, recently read an entertaining book about a couple (& dog) taking their English Narrowboat down the ICW. It's Narrow Dog to Indian River by Terry Darlington. * DVD -- Edited by dvd on Thursday 2nd...

    NOT a trawler?

We have chartered canal boats (Penichettes) in both Ireland on the Shannon-Erne waterway and France on the Canal du Midi and have found them very comfortable accommodations. These were, obviously, protected waterways, but people do venture out on to the Mediterranean in the south of France in...

    Show us your ER

Summer job at a boat yard during college. Since I was "the kid," I got the dirty work. They sent me down in an oily bilge with a 5 gallon can of toluene and a bunch of rags and told me to get it ready to paint. Never did remember much about the next few days. Later, in med school, I found out...

12V DC with 120V AC lamp wiring

It had been wired into a household circuit using a 60W bulb and it was wired with 14G stranded copper wire. If I use it on the boat, I would likely only use a 12V, 15W bulb (although a 30W bulb is available). DVD

12V DC with 120V AC lamp wiring

I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to electricity but I seem to have a mental block on understanding electron flow dating back to my undergraduate P-Chem days when I never did get the hang of balancing chemical equations. Since that time I've rewired houses, an old MGA, etc. and managed to...

    Checklists

Hmmm. So far, appears to be a wide spectrum in using lists. Maybe it's because people are so familiar with their boat they are comfortable with the routine they have established to check things out. Getting a new boat, I'll have to establish my routines, so I'll probably jot down a few lists to...

    Checklists

On another thread people are discussing routines for anchoring. Got me thinking about developing new checklists for when I pick up my new (to me) trawler later this Spring. are dual helm stations really needed

I like the option of interior or exterior helm station. What never did make sense to me is duplicating the interior helm on the flybridge by enclosing everything. Maybe a bimini to keep of the sun or rain, but if I need an enclosed helm, I go below.
