    Dripless? / Temperatures

Have normal packing gland around shaft, packing replaced about 30 running hours ago. It has never dripped since repacking, either at rest or underway. I figured it would wear in a bit and start dripping, but after about 20 hours I loosened the nuts a little, but still no drip. There is, and...

    What's in a name?

Ad Lib Although we picked the name based on the last definition below, the others seem to apply as well: Ad Lib verb; to act without plan They ad libbed their route. noun; something done without plan Their weekend cruise was a successful ad lib. adverb; performed without plan It was an ad...

California delta on the upcoming Independence Day

I don't recall anything like that, but it may exist. It seems like it would be very difficult to keep up because the shoaling would change after any significant rainfall or spring runoff. They, obviously, maintain the channels well to support commercial traffic, but out in the boonies, you were...

California delta on the upcoming Independence Day

Marin, As someone who has lived/boated in both Sacramento and the PNW, I think it is difficult to compare the Delta with the Sound. It's one of those "not better, not worse, just different" situations. Many years ago I kept a sailboat in Stockton and felt like I left the world behind as soon as...

    Emergency Tiller Porn

Well, I guess I really don't have an "emergency" tiller as much as a "secondary" or "manual" tiller. Mine, also, is under the V-berth. It is a substantial piece of stainless steel which could be moved aft fairly readily. However, preparations need to be made before unscrewing a stainless...

    Do you Kayak? opinions wanted..

Good luck! With the variety of kayaks out there I'm sure you'll find something to fit your needs. Mine are so light weight because they are sandwich construction with 3mm plywood core covered by fiberglass. It's like paddling a sports car versus a station wagon! Dvd

    Do you Kayak? opinions wanted..

I'll add my 2 cents here - spent many years in the PNW kayaking whitewater, surf, rivers, & ocean. It is true, there are as many kayaks as there are things to do with them. I now carry a couple of 16 ft. Pygmy Osprey I made about ten years ago. They are incredibly sturdy and light (38 lbs.)...

Standard Horizon - Bad News/Good News

Bought it from Defender -- packaging didn't appear to have been opened, so I'd guess it was a manufacturer's omission. dvd

Paravanes vs. Sea Gyro vs. Active Fins

Paravane Rigging Here's a link to a site describing the paravane rigging on a Nordhavn 46. This worked well for his extensive cruising and has been copied by several other boats that I know of. It may sound complex at first, but it is well thought out and allows the fish to be deployed quickly...

Standard Horizon - Bad News/Good News

Bought a new Standard Horizon VHF and Remote Station Mike. Went to install it over the weekend and found that the face plate for the remote mike was missing (needed for mounting). That's the frustrating bad news. The good news is that I called their customer service line, talked to a human who...

    Cat Got Your Tongue?

I've been thinking about power catamarans for several months since I saw a PDQ 41 at the Trawlerfest in Baltimore, but have hesitated broaching the subject on TF 'cause ... well, they're just not trawlers. But since we can call our boats pretty much what we want to, and since Mark brought up the...

    Re-plumbing

Just got done with a complete re-plumb, including moving the hot water heater and pressure pump and replacing all fixtures and showers. I'd highly recommend the PEX. Although not as flexible as one would think, it was tolerable to snake through where I needed it to go. I used the copper...

    Arrrgh! Not More Window Stuff!

Anode - Thanks, that's very helpful. I think I remember reading your renovation blog some time ago - pretty extensive job & nicely done. They look like the Waterway windows from Florida. If so, he suggests removing the mounting screws after the bedding has set-up to prevent stainless-aluminum...

    prop to rudde space.

Didn't actually measure this when hauled, but I would guess it's about 6-8" between the prop nuts and the rudder. Note that the rudder pivot point is offset and there's a hole in the rudder to accommodate removing the shaft. dvd

do you use a prologned signal exiting berth/marina?

Knowing the horn signals made my transit of the East River and NYC harbor much easier. Not all commercial traffic used them, but many did. Their intentions were much more clear to me from the horns than sorting out all of the radio chatter. dvd

    Hot Water Tank Re-Plumb

rwidman- I hear what you're saying, and it would be ideal to have only tubing with no transitions/fittings/90 degree turns, etc., but it just wouldn't work with the cold water take-off, the thermo valve take-off, the one-way valve, the drain valve, the expansion tank and the water heater supply...

    Hot Water Tank Re-Plumb

Unfortunately, even the most flexible hose wouldn't make the bends with the take-offs I needed to fit all of this into the limited space. The only "solid" connection with the CPVC is to the water heater, all other connections to the short CPVC "manifold" are either flexible hose or PEX so I'm...

    Arrrgh! Not More Window Stuff!

Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know it's a popular subject, but I have searched the archives and can't really find what I'm looking for. My '87 Taiwanese trawler has what I think are typical windows for the vintage, but due to some cracked glass and some safety glass delamination, they need replacing. I...

    Hot Water Tank Re-Plumb

The purple pieces are hard plastic overlays that keep the PEX tubing at a 90 degree bend without having to use another fitting that would increase internal resistance. They say PEX is flexible -- yeah, like my 65 year old hamstrings are flexible! dvd
