    Greenline 40: General Discussion

Yep, the 40's are absolutely gorgeous! And a great layout. And twin diesels. In '19 we spent a week down in the Channel Is. of So. Cal. with our 14 year old granddaughter and a friend, both sleeping in the salon of the 33. But in the AM, it looked like a chimp cage with an empty super-sized bag...

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

That port stern outlet is only for the electric motor/gen in my boat, Todd. I checked with the AC running, and not discharging there or anywhere else above the WL on walk around the boat, so I figure it's the one seen to Stbd. of the main through-hulls sump behind the engine air intake ducting...

    Greenline 40: General Discussion

My 33 came with the 20kg/44# Pool-type anchor with it's massively thick SS flukes close to 1/2" and no real points at the ends for penetration. I've had mixed results - particularly in the CA Channel Is. of Catalina and Santa Cruz that others with a plow had no troubles with. Sandy bottoms such...

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

Did a FWD bilge crawl with steps removed, and found no T-connections from either diesel cooling or AC plumbing. The AC seems to have a dedicated thru-hull exit adjacent to what seems to be the bilge pump discharge to Stbd of the main thru-hull sump , though part of the run is hidden. The...

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

Actually, a drop-in for the old base/pole. But the 2-mile light is larger and disc-like with LED's rather than the little dome with weak incandescent light. And it would probably leak a bit without the additional sealing

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

If rain/sea-spray gets through all the di-electric grease on the pole interior plug-in contacts, and the silicone sealant on all external possibilities I'll be surprised. The pole is removable by twisting the external collar which has a cam-like action, and a rubber plug for the hole.

Man, that's crazy that the AC cooling return is T'd into the exhaust system as well as having it's own discharge seacock. What in the name of Slovenia could they have been thinking? Or maybe this is a common practice I'm not aware of to aid in exhaust cooling...any ideas? I'll do a bilge...

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

Good luck in you transplant! I was surprised to see that the Volvo D3 220 has a similar 5-cyl aluminum block & head as the VW, slightly smaller displacement of 2.4L, but 4 valves/cyl rather than the VW's 2, which explains the additional 55HP with much higher air flow possible from its turbo...

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

Louise and I did enjoy the electric power in and around and leaving the marine, and returning usually downwind and usual 4-6' swell for the last several miles, and also whale watching - dieseling out into the bay, finding whales if we could, then switching to electric while we followed them...

GL33 VWmarine to Volvo D3 220hp conversion in US

Todd, could you please fill we VW powered 33 owners in on how your engine failed/flooded? At how many hours? My '14 33 hybrid clutch slave cylinder has failed, leaving the generator fully functional, and I'm considering just leaving it as such. Quite a big job as Scott can attest to. All the...

Thanks much for the info and photos! If I understand this correctly, you are trans-planting the cut off piece's end pressure line fitting by moving it to the drilled-out and thread-tapped new hole near the piston. How did you be sure that all metallic debris from the drilling/tapping were...

Welcome to the forum GK and thanks for the info. about your replacement of the slave cyl. In looking again at the "Letrica" motor replacement/service .pdf that ScottC sent me, and the Iskra exploded photos of the system, I see that the slave cyl. is within the electric motor bell-housing, not...

An 833nm journey in a GL 33 Hybrid

Hybrid mode not available for several months, prob. due to failure of the clutch slave cylinder inside the VW bellhousing, so can't separate the clutch plates. Will wait for next haulout for the major surgery required to replace the standard VW diesel auto part But the 5kW 48V generator mode...

An 833nm journey in a GL 33 Hybrid

Back a couple of days from a trip my wife and I took down the CA coast from Monterey Bay to San Diego on the Mexican border and back - by way of the Channel Is. of Catalina and Santa Cruz - after picking up our daughter and son-in-law at Dana Pt. past LA. They're experienced Pacific...

    Greenline 40: General Discussion

That's right in line with GL 40 specs of max of 6.9kts electic, consuming about 8.5kW each motor in your case - which are 10kW max, I believe. My '14 GL 33's elect. motor with the VW 165 HP diesel is rated 7 kW, and I get about 5kts max in still water, drawing ~120A-6kW.. No way a 40 is going...

Thanks Scott. Sorry not to get back to you earlier, but have already sourced my 40mm shaft seal w/ 60mm stern tube collar at General Prop. Co. in Florida. Below a link to installation and maintenance instructions. The 3rd pg. is the text in English, and the last two pgs. are the graphics...

    Greenline: Diesel Engine Discussions

Volvo dripless prop shaft seal Anyone have problems with these? I just read the info sheet which said that it must be "lubricated" every 200 hours - the drawing showing only putting a bead of grease around the prop. shaft - rubber boot junction, without detailing how to get it inside. Also, to...

    Greenline 33 (non-hybrid)

7kn in a GL33 @ 1gal/hr is not a realistic figure regardless of engine output, IMO. In my boat with the 165 TDi VW diesel with a relatively small displacement of 2.5L, 7kn burns 1.6 gal/hr. @ 2000 RPM (2:1 reduction) - well up in it's torque curve. A similar weight sailboat might, as the GL is...

Scott, when your shop replaced the slave cylinder X2 on your boat, did they have to go through the whole procedure of removing the motor/gen as described in the 20 pg .pdf you copied to me? Or were they able to "just" de-couple the diesel from the electric motor after having slid it all fwd...

Welcome, Todd, that's an interesting company! I learned to slalom behind a 17' Correct Craft in the '50's - a bit old for that now! How much does that giant 124 kWh battery weigh, and which lithium chemistry? Our puny 11.5 LiPo's only 175#! I've had a '14 GL33 Hybrid on Monterey Bay for almost...

    Greenline 39: General Discussion

Thank you! Here's another "pink moment with moon-rise" view. The wide full-length "knuckle" hull extensions above the WL allow a fine, sailboat-like entry. And an aft factory view of their "super-displacement" hull that maximizes efficiency up to about 14kn.

Greenline Hybrid: Solar Panel, Solar Charging & Propulsion Battery Discussions

Clutch master cylinder I've been pondering why a sturdy diesel VW van clutch master cylinder would fail with relatively little usage in this application. But then realized that when actuated on the boat, it's depressed and held as long as you're in electric mode rather than briefly with each...

    Greenline 33: General Discussion

In my case the failure was at dockside fortunately, and the problem was that the fitting had only several threads ahead of its locknut, and stripped off. I moved the cable clamp about 3/8" fwd for a good bite, and will take another look at it soon for unusual wear. The shift mech. is quite light...

The one ordered looks identical to the one pictured in the manual. It does have "INT" after the part #, which I assume is for "international".

I've thought of doing this also, as you have to remove the stbd side sound insulation panel to see the reservoir.. I'm thinking of leaving this off for the big cruise down to southern CA - about a 900mi round trip - for quicker access to bilge through-hulls and engine in general. Have you seen...
