    BC Canada Phone/Data Plans Help

T-Mobile or Project Fi! Go with T-Mobile. Data is free everywhere in the civilized world. It is supposed to be throttled while roaming, but in practice data is not very fast when outside of urban areas anyway. Project Fi, which I really like, uses T-Mobile, Sprint or Wifi seamlessly in the...

simple autopilot for single diesel trawler

The Garmin requires their own pump. Most other brands do not. But I wanted the pump in the engine room and I wanted two, in case one failed. By the way, unless you like the sound of squealing cats, it is best to locate autopilot pumps as far away from your steering station as is practical.

simple autopilot for single diesel trawler

Garmin !! I have both Comnav and Garmin Autopilots on the same boat. I added the Garmin both for redundancy and because the Comnav would just not perform to my expectations (I had a Simrad on another boat and I trusted that one to steer me into Gig Harbor - with my hand near the controls!)...

    DC System Discovery Day

Sterling Power Alternator to Battery Chargers are just the ticket. They trick your stock internally regulated alternator into putting out more current by lowering the voltage that they see and then charge your batteries properly by regulating the increased output current. It is truly magic...

Sourcing Solar products in the PNW

In Washington and Oregon, you can buy panels from Platt Electric. Call them up and they will deliver them to your local store, with no freight. In Washington, if you fill out a form, they will waive the sales tax as well. Everything else can come UPS, just search for the lowest price. The...

    Docking Controller

I bought one at the Seattle Boat Show last year (Installation is free if you do it then). I am just starting to trust it (and me) for docking the boat. The more I use it, the more I like it. I first started to use it for picking up the anchor, a task for which it is just wonderful. You stand...

    AIS Decisions (Make, Transceiver, Receiver)

The Vesper stuff is on sale this week through active captain: ActiveCaptain Product of the Week. It has several features that the competition does not, such as the ability to repeat NMEA 0183 data on the N2K bus and to act as a usable backup or primary GPS. See the good review here in Panbo...

    Digital volt + amp meters

The meter doesn't know or care whether the shunt is on the negative or positive pole. Whole house meters are usually on the negative pole because that makes it easier to measure everything in the system. For alternator or solar panel output, you can just put the shuntg on the positive side and...

    Propane stoves

Just for the record, the three burner Force 10 is identical in output to the four burner one except that one small burner is not there (one 8200 plus two 3200). I think it is a preferable model, not because its output is any greater, but because three burners are really all that can be fit in...

    Propane stoves

Somewhat like politics these days, facts don't seem to matter. A BTU is a measure that is directly related to the amount of time it will take you to boil a pot of water. Therefore, as long as the burner is capable of also putting out low heat for simmering, more BTU's are definitely better...

    Propane stoves

I have a Force 10 four burner and I would really like to yank it out and replace it with that Dickinson three burner stove. The Force 10 has absolutely anemic burners and they are so closely spaced that only three of them are usable anyway. Just look at the Force 10 output (one 8200 and three...

    Out of State Boat Search

Get a buyer's broker Never use the listing broker, he/she will have an inherent conflict of interest. It will cost you nothing to have your own broker do the negotiating. If you pick a good one, you will come out far, far ahead. There is also no reason to pick a broker in the vicinity of...

    Selling a copyright business name

Nothing to sell Generally speaking, business names are not subject to copyright under US law: http://copyright.gov/circs/circ34.pdf If you have an official registered trademark on the name, you may be able to sell it, but unless it is a name that someone with deep pockets actually wants...

    outdoor marine freezer

Just buy a cheap household freezer I can't see paying "marine" prices. I just buy a small chest freezer at the Home Depot, Lowes, or Best Buy and put it on the top deck. It runs fine and keeps things cold. After about 3-4 years up there, it will start looking rusty, like a car from the...

    Marine A/C Question

Yes, but a leak in the water hose after it leaves the air conditioner itself will quickly sink the boat. As for properly maintained systems not leaking, you are putting a lot of faith in your ability to inspect not usually visible plumbing. Like a salt-water washdown pump, air conditioning is...
