    Radar

Raymarine with Wifi and/or ethernet The state of the art in Radar is changing rapidly. Raymarine now has a Chirp radar that will talk via wifi to its display. No need for an Ipad, which, in my opinion is a seriously bad idea for a radar display. See this: Panbo: The Marine Electronics Hub...

    Fluorescent Light Replacement

Go with Alpenglow I am very, very fond of the new Alpenglow LED fixtures. They are not cheap but are worth every penny. They have new square model which is 7" * 7" and which may well cover up the holes left by your old fixture. https://www.alpenglowlights.com/store/product/catalina.html

    NDZ Washington State

Blame the boatyards! The boatyards and other marine industry types went along with the copper bottom paint ban. Ineffective paint isis good for their business and if there is no copper in paint, they don't have to bother containing it when the scrape and repaint.

    Plagiarism on ActiveCaptain

Jeff, what precisely is the relevance of 400 new apps to this issue? (So important you saw fit to mention it at the beginning and the end of your post!). Do you really think that someone comes up with language that close randomly? College freshman get kicked out of school for a lot less. I...

    Plagiarism on ActiveCaptain

That is egregious! No, you are not being overly sensitive. When that sort of thing is brought to the attention of AC (Jeff that is you!), it should be deleted and the "Captain" who posted it should be suspended.

Is A Charles Industries Charger Great?

I had one that died soon after it went out warranty. I think they are overpriced on a dollar per watt basis. Magnum inverters, in my opinion, provide the best and most cost effective chargers. (I have two, which can provide 100 amps each at 24 volts.) Or, if you want a charger only, I think...

    Which VHF antenna?

Buy Morad! If you look at fishboats in Seattle or Alaska, the vast majority are using the Morad HD antenna: VHF antennas — Morad Electronics Some have a veritable farm of them at various altitudes. They know what works and they depend on them reliable communications. Plus they are made in...

Cruise Ship Smashes Dock in Ketchikan

A Puget Sound pilot came to talk to my yacht club and he stated quite unequivocally that he drove the boat down the Sound and, impressively, while taking it in and out of its berth. This included harrowing tales of docking large container ships with cross winds in narrow Tacoma channels...

    MPPT 60 amp $70 and a question

First, where are going to fit a solar array that will put out fifty amps on a boat? Second, the wires that come out that device are about 2" on each side. 4" of 14 gauge wire has a resistance of .001 ohms. Even at the outside case of 50 amps through there, I get a voltage drop of ~.7% at 12...

    MPPT 60 amp $70 and a question

There is just a couple inches of low resistance thin stuff coming out of the gauge. I am using 8 gauge to the batteries as well. You just splice the two thin black leads into your negative going to the battery and you are all set. It requires power to the left red lead and I recommend that...

    MPPT 60 amp $70 and a question

"Watt's Up" is the ticket You really need more than instantaneous amps. You need is the cumulative power generated by your panels. For that, a really simple solution is the Watt's Up, which measures eight DC values: Amp-Hours: (0 - 65) Watt-hours: (0 - 6554) Amps: (0-100 peak) Watts: (0 -...

    AIS transceiver with Raymarine E120

Forget about Seatalk That old Raymarine stuff will listen to plain old NMEA 0183 and also speak it. The Seatalk is just good for private conversations between old Raymarine equipment. Get yourself any old transceiver from Miltech and hook it up with those skinny wires. Beware that the...

I disagree. If you have not been (even if you have), Victoria is a very interesting place to stay. If you want something quieter than in front of the Empress and one that takes reservations, you can dock at the Coast Hotel. In Roche, I would take a taxi to the Duck Soup Inn for dinner. It...
